Robocop1051's 14.5" Dissipator 300 AAC Blackout
Jgun replied to Robocop1051's topic in 300 AAC Blackout
rifle looks very clean with that slick side upper, looks good on the Mega lower. This is your first 300 build, correct? You'll have to tell us what you think of the rd, and how you like that LOKI barrel, I'm thinking I need to give them a call and ask about a 14.5 for myself. The only explanation I can think of is mob mentality, I'm not usually so easily influenced! -
I hesitate to comment on this because there is just so much that none of us know about the shooter. But, although I have a healthy mistrust of the Gov, I believe that a more plausable scenario than Gov programmed people, might be that this apparently highly intelligent individual, acted alone, to create enough public outrage, so that the anti gun movement is able to prevail, or, a more likely explaination, he is a mentally unstable person that feels invisible, and wants desperitely to be noticed, and instead of working diligantly in his chosen field for years to make a positive contribution to society that might get him recognized someday, he was able, with one heinous act to become famous. It is unfortunate that due to the freedoms in our country, these type of people seem to have ready access to the tools to commit these atrocious acts. Make no mistake, if he could not have done it with guns, he would have managed to do it with anthrax, saran gas, or fertilizer and fuel oil. As long as these people have the financial means, and the access to the components to commit these crimes, they will continue. It is the mindset of the individual that we need to be worried about. Unfortunately, this happens to serve the cause of those that would like to disarm us for their own agenda. I think that if, as I read somewhere else, a couple of patrons of the theater had been armed with .40 Glocks, and had returned fire this guy would have likely, been preoccupied with their offensive actions and might have been put on the defensive, instead of walking around the theater unchallanged and killing people that were either unable, or unwilling to fight back. I don't know this to be true, but I have read that the type of body armor he wore (soft) is such that although it will protect from penetration, those struck with major cal rds with feel as though they have been punched and will at the least be distracted, and possibly choose to retreat. Another thing to consider is that theaters, due to their policy of no firearms, like colleges, become very attractive targets for those that wish to commit these acts without fear of opposition.

I just checked my receiver and the bore for the forward assist on my upper is .505", the space on my receiver between the port door mounts is 3.350" and the height appears correct as well. so it looks like the Armalite parts would fit. I think I'm going to measure the DPMS parts that are on my other .308s to see if their measurments match those that you've provided me from the Armalite. Thanks for your help.

Don't know if any of you guys have done this, but I've got to order some small parts for my long range build. Since I need an AR-10 gas tube, and some other Armalite specific parts, I'd like to order everything I need, right from them, and avoid duplicate shiping charges. Does anyone know if the ejection port door, pin and spring, along with the farward assist parts from the AR 10 will fit the POF? If no one can answer that one, perhaps one of you guys with an AR-10 could measure the dimensions of the Armalite parts, (length, height of port door, and dia of F assist button where it goes into the upper) I'd much appreciate it.

Too bad about the mono setups. You guys that already have them now have collectors items. I wonder what they're alluding to with the line about a revolutionary new design? So far I've been impressed with everything I've seen from them, hope they raise the bar even higher with the next offering, something with an integral collapsing stock like AAC's Honeybadger would be very nice.

Lots of choices for handguards, first decide if where you want/need rails to be, if at all, also good to have the gas tube ,which is somewhat fragile, covered, so if you have an Armalite rifle length gas system, you're probably going to want a rail/ freefloat tube that is long enough to protect the gas tube. Also, there may be some (fairly easy) wrenching involved to remove/install the rail, along with some of the handguards mounting with proprietary barrel nuts that will require a matching wrench, along with a upper receiver vise block to hold the upper in place while you change the parts. None of this is particularly difficult, and once you've decided what handguard you want, the members here can give you any info you need on how to swap them.

392heminut, Re the reblue of your Python. I may be mistaken, but I don't think that Turnbull will do the work. I think I contacted them about rebluing a Smith model 29 of mine and they told me that they don't work on them. Don't know if it's DA's in general, or just the S&W's.

These guys have a reputation for good quality work, (although not cheap). I don't know if they make their own handguards, but I've read (I think on this forum) where people have had problems with some of the wooden AR handguards cracking. I guess they need to be well made and properly fitted. I found the color case hardening to be interesting. I really love the way it looks on the SA revolvers. I've got a Ruger Vaquerro that has it and I'm dreaming about having it done over by one of these outfits someday. Another company that does museum quality work is Bowen Classic Arms. If you like the old (and not so old) revolvers, You should take a look at the gallery on their site, or maybe you shouldn't, it may cost you some money. http://www.bowenclassicarms.com/

Just out of curiosity, Did you find that you liked the PRS for 3gun?

Anyone looking for an AR to go with their Colt SA revolvers? Maybe there's a new type of Cowboy action shooting match I'm not aware of. http://www.turnbullmfg.com/store.asp?pid=36767

Armalite BCG or DPMS BCG for AR-10 build
Jgun replied to Makulu's topic in AR-10 General, Technical Discussion
I am in a somewhat similar situation. I just bought a LW barrel, which is Armalite pattern, and comes with a fitted bolt. the rest of my gun is DPMS pattern. I am planning to purchase a DPMS pattern carrier, and I intend to remove the DPMS bolt and measure it, along with the bolt provided by LW. I hadn't checked availability of Armalite bolts recently. My plan is motivated by the number of different Mfg's that are producing DPMS pattern bolts vs the number that are making Armalite. (is anyone other than Armalite even producing an Armalite pattern BCG?). From my research, I've been led to understand that, as listed above, it's the bolt and barrel extension that are the key,and need to be the same pattern, but whenever your entering uncharted terretory, you have to be prepared to make your own decisions and deal with the consequences. In this case, if the Armalite bolt and the DPMS carrier proved to be incompatible, and were to fail during firing, the consequeces could be severe. I will share my results once I've purchased the DPMS pattern bolt and have measured the two bolts, but, just as with load developement, you should never do something just because you read somewhere that someone else says that they have done it successfully. If you try it or get any other info on this, please be kind enough to share your information and I will be sure to do the same. -
That makes sense. At this point, I'm sure I'm going to assemble and test fire it first, the only question is whether I'll ever get around to taking it back apart to send the barrel off to be treated, I guess we shall see.

I just put a PRS on mine. You need the A1 rifle length buffer tube for the PRS. I picked up a DPMS tube on Ebay for $18 I think. Now don't take this as fact, but it is my understanding that you can use your carbine buffer and spring with the PRS if you order a small internal spacer that you put inside the rifle length buffer tube to make up the difference in the lengths between the rifle and carbine buffers, that way you're not forced to buy a second rifle length buffer, if your intention is to switch to the UBR down the road.

Looking forward to seeing the pics, I'm sure it will look outstanding. How does it feel to you weight wise compared to a seperate receiver/rail setup? Reason I ask is because I've got a buddy that put together one of the first Vltor MUR monolithic Ar 15 uppers and although it was a great gun, it was a brick. I've heard that Mega tried to keep the weight down on these, so I'm wondering if it feels comparable to the same setup but non monolithic to you?
-
Got it, the reason I was asking was because it looked visually as though it was too short to cover the rifle length gas block, but i wasn't sure if I was misjudging it. Thanks for the clarification.
-
Yes it's the .308 PRS so I didn't have to trim the cheek riser.
-
That IS nice!!!!. Can you tell me what the length of the rail is? I'm assuming that since you say rifle length, it's designed to cover a rifle length gas block, correct?

I don't know if they're worth over 3X the price of a Pmag, but price aside, I've always thought that 25 rds was a good size for a .308 mag. I liked the 25 rd Galil mags better than the 20rd M14's. I think they're still cheaper than the 20 rd Knights .308 mags.
-
I see that POF offers 25 rd DPMS/SR 25 pattern .308 AR mags on their site. Anyone have personal experience with them? They're pretty pricey, so I'd hate to try one and find that they're not reliable.

Lothar Walther barrel arrived this week, so I trial fit it today. This is basically what the finished gun will look like. It weighs 9 lbs as pictured (without bipod) and I still have to add bolt carrier group, buffer/spring, and trigger, so this will not be a lightweight, but I expected it to be heavy from the outset, just hope the barrel groups as will as the one pictures above.
-
Now that you've found out that it's got a chrome plated bore (definitely a good choice for a 7.62 X 39 IMO) as you already know, the only option is to either replace the bolt or barrel to get it to headspace. I've never done a 7.62 X 39 AR, but I can't help but wonder if the headspace issue would have come up at all if you'd have gone with YHM's bolt? As 98 said, I have found YHM to be good people to deal with, and that they stand behind their products. Some people feel that their stuff is not as good as some of the other outfits offerings, but I find that their pricing is usually better so the quality is in line with the price point.

The only complaint I ever recall hearing about assembling a gun based on a Mega receiver, was one member that said he had trouble getting his trigger pins to fit, but I think it may have been his lack of experience, and not a receiver issue. I think that you would do well to figure out what parts you want in your gun and get them ordered. That way they will all start rolling in and hopefully, you'll be ready to put it all together the day your receiver set arrives. That's the fun part that all of us look forward to. Usually, (for me) I'm buying parts and adding them to the receiver as they arrive, and I've usually got a an almost complete gun that's waiting for one remaining vital component to arrive in order to be finished. If you could order, and have all of your parts in hand when your receiver set arrives, you will avoid the frustration of looking at a non functional, almost complete rifle for an extended period of time.

Good point, I've seen that before. but if the gun is short stroking, and the bolt/carrier is stopping before the bolt clears the back of the rd in the mag, and the bolt catch is catching the carrier and not the bolt, that would be a different thing than what he's describing, no? I think the first thing we need is for the OP to tell us, when the bolt is locked back manually,by the bolt catch, if he looks into the ejection port, is the bolt further back than the back of the top rd in the mag? If so, we go to what I said before, while holding the charging handle back, hit the bolt release, and then slowly let the carrier come forward, while controlling it with the charging handle, if it fails to strip a rd from the mag, while slowly/manually cycling it, I'm thinking that he's looking at a problem with the mag being too low, or possibly a problem with the mag itself. I'm thinking that if the same thing happened with 3 different mags, It's unlikely that it's mag related. I had a condition on one of my guns, where the gun cycled when manually operated with the charging handle, but when fired it, it didn't always pick up the next rd from the mag, or lock back on an empty mag. This was a newly built gun, using full power factory ammo. In my case all it took to remedy the problem was more lube to the BCG (I soaked it until it was dripping, but not heavy oil) and a few more break in rds to get the parts used to each other.

If you look at the post by 338fedAR10, responding to the question about usiing the 12 TRX with rile length gas system, 338 says that the 13.8 TRX works out to be flush with the front of the rifle length gas block. below is the original thread title. MA-TEN with 12" TRX Rail and Armalite Rifle Lenght gas system

What is the barrel material, and is it plated?
