LW 20" 308 build completed!

oh that .243 is pretty! i really want to build one of those!!! Good work man! -
well being an engineer i want to have my cake and eat it too. i would ideally like a flip up sight system that is free of any variance in the zero once set. i know this is not really practicle and seeing as this is a carbine the gun itself is not perfectly accurate so i guess the true question is is the front flip up accurate enough to place say 1.5 moa groups on a 1 moa gun? not saying i know my rifle to be 1 moa as i have not really ever measured a grouping but my feel from my past experience with the rifle is that it is probably between 1 and 1.5 MOA and i would like to achieve this type of accuracy with the iron sights. my plan is to remove the scope and use the sights stand alone for now but would, in the future, like to use the same sights as a backup with a scope mounted to a accurate quick release mount. that plan is just out of my price range at the moment.

I have been using a bi pod on my MOE ORC for years now. I used the MOE slind swivel stud mount kit to mount a harris bipod to and used the sling mount on the gas block. Glad to see bushmaster coming out with more models of AR308. I put the MOE on my ORC back in 2011 right after purchasing the ORC, only change i havce made to her yet. great gun! not the best pic but you can see the swivel stud on the MOE grip and the bipod removed:

thanks for all the responses guys. I know i am probably going to have to change out the gas block since YHM discontinued the YHM-9360K unless anyone has found an alternative? any one have experience with the YHM-9394 i linked above? just curious to how well it holds zero after folding. found the same one on bravocompany for cheaper than Yankee hills site: http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/Yankee-Hill-Machine-yhm-Front-Flip-Sight-Tower-p/yhm-9394%20flip%20sight%20tower.htm I really was trying to stay away from the regular railed gas block and clamp on flip up sight due to the extra weight and i have never liked how they look. I know that sounds like a wierd criteria but being an engineer things that are excessively loaded or overly module bug me so i have never really been big into the quad rail hand gaurd, million attachment kind of rifles. any opinions as to a clamp on gas block vs a pinned one?

This might be a stupid question but i know bush master used to sell a yankee hill clamp on front sight for the gas block style on the ORC (#YHM 9320 i believe) but i cant find it any more, was it discontinued? anyone have a alternatice to add iron sights to the ORC? I really dont want to spend the $$$ for a full float tube and rail, just looking for a clamp on front sight or maybe a standard A2 stye front gas block with the sight. I found this on YHM site: http://yhm.net/front-flip-sight-tower-standard.html looks like it could function the same as the one bushmaster used to sell. any one have any experience with this? and i know i have a ORC and trying to put iron sights on it is kinda backwards but i was looking to change direction than the origional intent and play with her with some iron sights for a while. here is a pic of my ORC with MOE setup how it is now with the nikon monarch 3-12x42:

The 338 win is a great caliber for a bolt but I really want something that I can fit in a semi auto preferably a lr-308 platform. I had looked at the 458 socom for the little ar platform but it does not have the ballistics I want in the 2-400 yard range and I feel the 338 federal could give me a little more knockdown than the 308 but still behave decent at a longer range. Ideally I want to make a somewhat lightweight 18" barrel ar I could use on moose up to 300 yards and still have the semi auto capability incase I stumble upon some angry bears in the bush for hunting and for general survival while in the bush for other activities. Granted I still carry a 44 mag most of the time for fast reaction bear sightings but I want a gun I can keep on my back or in the truck so if I break down or get stranded I have something that could kill any preditor nearby and still feed me. I have need using my 308 ar that way now but I would like a little more knock down incase I really do have that chance encounter with a grizzly.

good luck huntin and let us know what you end up with. always good to know where to find more decent priced 308 ar's

that almost make me shoot fruit loops out my nose....hahaha AWESOME! -
i picked up a bushmaster ORC for 750 at the local sportsmans warehouse and have seen several there for that price since. they go on special every now and again. must not be moving fast enough for them or something.

I find it really ironic that there is a massive cold spell going on down there but we are having record highs for this time of year up here. I actually saw grass today for the first time since September. It got to 35 and I had to bust of the t shirts haha

It could be worse.... We get 80 mph winds regularly at my house and feet of snow. I got a truck with 42" tires stuck in my drive way two days ago and just finally got it dug out today! Got to love Alaska!

all i have to say is i love my bushmaster ORC and welcome to the site!

FS - Nikon Monarch Gold 1200 Laser Rangfinder

man i wish i would have seen this earlier! i would have jumped on that like a hobo on a ham sandwich! -
i have the bushmaster optics tready carbine with a 16" 1:10 twist barrel with a nikon monarch 3-12x42 on top and it has the generic BDC reticle and it is really quite close to my balistics with factory 168 grain ammo. i set it at 100 yards and my hold it consistantly hits inside the circles on the recticle. i mean it might not be good enough for a head shot at 800 yards but i would call it minute of moose(kill shot that is not just to hit the moose) at 500 easy. and if you end up not being close just practice like the owners manual suggests till you know where on the recticle your hold is at the specific yardages and then you will have a reference.

I can measure once I get home from the holidays if no one else gets to it first.

Bushmaster ORC .308 barrel nut not aligned to the gas tube

Bushmaster ORC .308 barrel nut not aligned to the gas tube
ryantowry_81 replied to BroncoAZ's topic in Bushmaster
good to know it will fit. i have the exact rifle and i had no such problem with the barrel nut not indexed correctly, i have had mine together and apart a couple times since purchasing. I am with you on not wanting to spend seriuos $$$$$ to get a free float mid length. i have been contemplating getting a stock DPMS aluminum rifle length and machining it down to mid length but maybe i will just go with the MOE for now. could you post up some pictures? -
oh yeah please let us know how you like it and how the balistics hold up to what they say. I really want to build a large game upper and then a long range upper out of a 243 or similar so i can have the same gun for hunting practically anything along with my carrbine upper for home defense.

Anyone know where I can get a 5 round DPMS style .308 mag?
ryantowry_81 replied to TacBlade's topic in General Discussion
Sweet that is a good find! I will have to get one if those. How far does the four rounder stick out of the magwell if at all?
