  1. I agree it probably won't melt. I doubt it would be affected much at all...if it is the right type of thermo-polymer compound. I nominate you to test it out! <munch> Jon
  2. I haven't looked at those in person. Is there tritium in the front and rear sights? Just the front? Concerning the metal versus plastic, people said the same thing about Ruger's new 10/22 trigger group. Somewhere there is a video of a person jumping up and down on the plastic tg...still have yet to find the video of the metal one being jumped on. Our Marlin 795 has a plastic hammer but it goes bang every time. Heck, in Russia they don't know what to do with all the plastic car bodies that they made from the 1950s on. The engines and chassis are no good but the plastic bodies are still there. Jon
  3. Right after I found this thread I got an email from a fellow instructor. We both work for a non-profit community shooting group, Southern Arizona Firearms Educators (S.A.F.E.) Inc. He is also an FFL and offered all of us a price on these that will be hard to refuse. I may have part with the RRA! Jon
  4. Man, his six posts must've been all to say goodbye. :'( My LAR-8 makes them too. Should be ok if we stay away from pistol primers. <lmao> Jon
  5. Thanks Matt! This LAR-8 dumps the brass in a small area...been a long time since I had a rifle that did that! Quite a contrast to Mini14s or AKs that look like fieldgoal kicks flying across the range. Jon
  6. Man, that's gotta be understatement of the year right there! <thumbsup> Jon
  7. Thanks JG and Robo! Walking funny? Either put down a shooting mat or move the cacti before you sit. <laughs> If there are more up here and towards Phoenix, I have a good in for 400+ yards. Property owner is hoping for 1500 someday. Jon
  8. I remember a story of someone heading into their hunting area one year. A guy was flagging people down, offering them $100 for a few rounds of .375 H&H...since he forgot his ammo at home. That would officially make that hunt a Suckfest. Jon
  9. Thanks EC! Maybe we'll be able to get a little S.AZ shoot together. Jon
  10. While the .338 Federal is intriguing, I've always heard this whisper telling me to do something with a semi-auto and the .358 Winchester. First it was to convert an M1A. That would be fun, if impractical and expensive. Now with the LAR-8, it would seem to be a small matter to just plop on another upper in .358, though it may also be expensive. As was already mentioned though, .308 can be had most anywhere in the Western Hemisphere...should you forget your ammo at home. Jon
  11. I know that is true. It often crosses my mind what the mark-up must be on polymer pistols. When SIG puts out a package on the P250, with three grip frames and two uppers, retailing for $600 on sale, you know manufacturers are making a killing on them. As far as these cases go, maybe they will sell them in bulk still connected to mould branches like our old plastic airplane models. Spend an afternoon in front of the t.v. with the Xacto knife cutting them off. Jon
  12. Whoa!! Okay...here's some old pics. ;D As you can see...it has a healthy diet! Jon
  13. Sweet! So that means, with plastic being 1/1000th the price of brass, we should be able to get 1,000 cases for a pennance. ;D Jon
  14. Probably not the same but I picked up 1,500 rounds of the Dynamite Nobel German surplus (with the cupro nickel jackets) at Ammoman. It works well in the LAR-8! Jon
  15. I've looked at some of the charging handles, wanting to replace the stock model that came on my RRA Operator. The stock CH offers little clearance under the eyepiece of the scope (glad it is a smaller scope ::) ). I'd like a recommendation for one that has decent clearance. RRA offers the PRI Gas Buster CH but it looks like it isn't any wider than the stock one...just a bigger latch. Thanks for your replies! Jon
  16. 98Z5V, you got it! Send me a pm and we can get something worked out. Thanks for the welcome! Jon
  17. I've always liked the .308, had a couple of M1As. The M14 community is constantly searching for bolts, op-rods, trigger groups, etc. Looked at many of the currently available options in the .308 semi-auto offerings, SCAR, RFB, FAL, but the AR10-types are making a type of comeback. As someone else mentioned, better metals, better engineering. After researching them, I went with the RRA LAR-8 Operator. Found new production FAL mags at AIM Surplus. Been real happy with it! Jon
  18. Lack of common parts. With the AR15 types you can do lots of switching around of parts, with little issues. Jon
  19. Picked it up a few months back. After shopping all the .308 AR platforms, this one seemed like the best deal...all the extras I was looking for, so I wouldn't need to shop all the aftermarket goodies (HA! Yeah, right). When I got it, the only scope I had available was a cheapie NcStar that had been around. That worked ok for a bit. I wanted a lower powered variable, so started shopping those. A buddy strongly recommended the Redfield 2-7x32mm, so got one of those. Great scope for the money! Had it mounted at first on a Burris P.E.P.R. mount, which was a bit too high for my squat face. It now sits in a set of Weaver extra high tactical rings, which are just right for me. While the rifle was sighted in with the cheap scope and run for reliability (VERY reliable!), I have yet to go to the range with the current setup. Got a bunch of FN/FAL mags NEW from AIM Surplus. Korean made steel. A few needed the followers fixed but all run 100% now. Pics after the next range session. Jon
  20. That's the same thing I was thinking when I read this. Did you solve the problem? Jon
  21. Howdy Everyone! Just joined after finding this place. Living in Pima County, near Tucson. I have a RRA LAR-8 Operator. Jon
  22. Just found the site here, after doing a search ".308 AR comparisons". Looks good! Jon
