  1. That reminds me of what my grandfather told me about his experiences in WWII. He was on the German side of things. The Germans ran out of morphine and other stuff, so what do you do when you gotta cut out some shrapnel and sew a guy up? It was called 'die Hammernarkose'. The 'hammer narcotic'. Take a hammer and hit the guy on his head right behind the ear, and he's out. Trouble is, if you hit too hard, he's just dead. Not hard enough, and he's in even worse pain than before.
  2. Probably tastes like chicken.
  3. My dad, US Navy and later USMC, WWII, told me that there were lots of guys who were addicted to chloroform. You could get it in all sorts of places. I guess you would say they were the original 'huffers'. You could also get "cough tablets" with chloroform mixed in, and the addicts would go for them, too. There were also guys addicted to ether. It's a fraction of alcohol, used for general anesthesia. But you could buy that all over, too. And ether is 'huffed' (inhaled). So they had some real issues with drugs and huffers and etc. and so forth back then that were maybe worse than we have today. Certainly the bar scenes were far more violent. The USMC would make barking noises at the Army guys and then they would all try to kill each other before the MPs showed up. My dad was amazed about a dozen years ago that he went to a reunion of Marines and others that hit Iwo Jima and it was an open bar and nobody pulled a shiv or anything like that. Maybe we have become more civilized after all.
  4. I guess this would be a P.S. I got the low-profile upper receiver from DPMS in record time. They'd warned of a 2-3 week delay and I got the thing in 7 days. The local gunsmith, who's trying to retire and is only open 2 days a week, 6 hours per each day, swapped out the upper receivers in a couple hours at a cost of $80.25 -- all labor. I'd already installed the forward assist, so that wasn't part of the deal. That was kinda painful, but still -- I didn't want to buy tools I would only buy once for one job. But the result is the important thing. I did the Bore Sight Boogie all over again and found that my front sight is now nice and robust. Looks like a range rifle, but strong enough for woods-running. Works perfectly with my rear sight. And things worked out as Blue noted -- the issue of getting a cheek weld when the iron sights are too tall. Thanks, Blue! The sights are now low enough that I get a nice cheek weld and will no longer be looking at the Magpul PRS because of the adjustable cheek riser. I still might look hard at the simply because it looks like it offers a shorter length of pull on the stripped version. I'm not built like a bull, and chasing Bambi's mom through the woods with an LR-308T is job enough. A shorter pull will make it easier to bring the rifle's center of gravity closer to my 'center of muscles'. You've probably seen right-handed shooters with the left hand under the barrel shroud and the left elbow in their gut. That's me. And, hunting is all about offhand shooting. When I was a kid, I practiced like crazy and shot amazing groups, I was just that kind of kid. And shooting offhand is how you bring home rabbits and squirrels. Well, I gotta get back to that if I'm gonna bring home Bambi's mom's steaks. With the length of the buffer tube on an LR-308, there's only so much you can do with the length of pull. Sorry for writing so much, but dang, this change in receivers really made a difference that I intend to enjoy.
  5. Confess... you have confessed a bit already, you have replaced parts on your rifle. You will find yourself doing it more and more. I myself have a DPMS LR-308T, and in spite of pride of ownership -- having a rifle hated by libtards -- there was room for improvement. And so I did a few things, and then, several more. You will find yourself doing the same if you frequent this rather esoteric site and attend to the discussions of others in a similar circumstance. No need to be bashful, you will get upgrades.
  6. Yeah, but with a pistol grip it's still kinda plastic. I'm still looking for a DPMS LR-308 style wooden grip. Got really screwed buying the Tubb2K offering -- they said it would fit the DPMS but it's only for the SR-25 etc. -- and am still in the market. It's funny, the folks who sell wooden furniture for AR-style rifles do not respond to emails regarding whether they'd sell just the wood grip. I tried everyone I could find. I suspect there's an overlooked market out there.
  7. Hope that cat hasn't been 'fixed' You could start a breed of 'guard cats' and make million$.
  8. I agree that stealth is excellent, who would suspect you had long arms in the middle of your living room within easy reach? Even so, guys who like glass-fronted gun cabinets would probably like a glass-top table with the same theme and purpose.
  9. Something like that would look pretty sharp with a transparent glass top.
  10. It would be impractical to take your bench rest along when hunting. Offhand shooting is an important SHTF skill, too.
  11. SHTF décor! It wouldn't take much to build one of those, either.
  12. McCarthy said Chicago Police are working with the ATF to find the guns and used the conference to call for stricter gun control laws. “Safeguarding firearms is something that is incredibly important to prevent them from being stolen and hitting the streets,” said McCarthy. The rifles stolen last week were Smith & Wesson AR-15 assault rifles. They come equipped with 30-round magazine clips capable of firing 5.56mm "NATO round" ammunition. McCarthy believes the guns “are right here in this community.” From: Chicago's Police Chief Not Surprised By Assault Rifle Theft - Chicagoist - May 13, 2014 http://chicagoist.com/2014/05/13/chicagos_police_chief_not_surprised.php
  13. The latest bit of news in this saga... more to come on October 8. Poor guy. Deputy pleads guilty to building assault rifle - SF Gate - May 12, 2014 http://www.sfgate.com/news/crime/article/LA-deputy-pleads-guilty-to-building-assault-rifle-5472110.php [excerpt] A Los Angeles County deputy pleaded guilty Monday to illegally building an assault rifle, in the first plea deal among 20 officials charged or indicted in an ongoing federal investigation of the sheriff's department. Richard White Piquette admitted in court that he manufactured a Noveske Rifleworks N-4 .223-caliber rifle with an eight-inch barrel, City News Service reported. Under federal law, the rifle's barrel length should have been at least 16 inches. The charge carries a possible federal prison sentence of up to 10 years and a $250,000 fine, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office. Sentencing was set for Oct. 8.
  14. The Bug-A-Salt will be an NFA item when they're done.
  15. Crossbreed does not allow you to search for a holster, I can't see how they sell a durn thing. White Hat doesn't offer a holster for a 1911 22.
  16. It does look tasty, doesn't it. Looks like Microgunner and Heminut have solved this issue.
  17. Welcome to what's likely the only site on the internet where people are talking about modifying the bug-a-salt gun and probably figure out how to make it good for out to 10 yards.
  18. Draco, Do you have a pic, or a link to a pic, of a 'Crossbreed' holster? There's so many names out there for types, there's pancakes, butterflies, paddles, cops, crossdraw, and most of these look like each other.
  19. Around here, nobody will ride anything that isn't a Harley Davidson. Except for the very few who ride rice rockets. I saw a BMW bike here about 12 years ago. Maybe the problem is, this bike is a thumper that doesn't look like a Harley and isn't a ricer.
  20. Do you wear/carry that thing on a motorcycle or do energetic things with that pistol/holster combination? Most of the time I'm squatting behind a desk and I would trust nearly any holster for that situation, but I want a holster I don't and won't need to worry about.
  21. Why is ATF seizing 'toy guns'? - Examiner - February 28, 2010 http://www.examiner.com/article/why-is-atf-seizing-toy-guns [excerpts] A local business owner is flabbergasted after a shipment of 30 toy guns for his store was confiscated by ATF agents in Tacoma. It gets more flabbergasting: Special Agent Kelvin Crenshaw said the toys can be easily retro-fitted into dangerous weapons. "With minimal work it could be converted to a machine gun," Crenshaw said. ATF agents determined that the rifles as shipped from Taiwan were tooled to shoot plastic balls. However ATF says a relatively quick retooling could allow them to fire live ammunition. ======>follow the trail of ATF and Airsoft weaponry, it gets way stupider.
  22. When I see "w00t w00t", it reminds me of the sounds US destroyers in the South Pacific used to make after repelling an attack by the Japanese. It certainly sounds like their steam sirens, "w00t w00t" http://hornwhistleboard.com/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=326 Don't know if they have the sound and my internet connection is not fast enough to do sound, but I've heard the 'w00ting', and it makes your hair stand up. Sounds like a predator.
  23. If these are Magpul stocks, they "fell off of a truck" somewhere and are now hitting the "secondary" market. Magpul wouldn't voluntarily sell their stocks this cheap, undercutting Midway and Brownell's and who knows how many other dealers. Magpul wouldn't even do this if the stocks were made in China. If these are for the Airsoft market I think I would despair of putting one on an actual rifle, but who knows? I get the impression that Airsoft is trying so hard to make realistic-looking weapons that they get people killed.
  24. Wow. Looks like a perfect knock-off of the MagPul PRS buttstock. The price, compared to the MagPul article, is astoundingly cheap. Same with comparison to the Luth-AR. Gotta wonder if this knockoff is as sturdy as the MagPul edition. This sort of thing was bound to happen, which is a good thing. Maybe some intrepid souls here will do a comparison of all these adjustable buttstocks. My kitty is tapped out for now.
  25. Friends, As I mentioned in another thread, I was looking at investing in a Browning 1911-22 for concealed carry. I have done the deed. It's a nice shooter, etc., I'm not doing a review here unless requested. My issue is with a concealed carry holster for the little beast. There aren't many holsters on the market for it. Many of them are made from fabric, and, well, they look more like disposable diapers than anything else. They also look bulky. I'm leaning strongly in favor of this holster from D.M. Bullard: You will notice there is no strap over the back of the pistol that holds it down into the holster. Judging from the fact that many holsters on the market don't have a hold-down strap, maybe this is not an issue. But if I'm carrying, say on the riding lawn mower, or crawling into the car at the local shopping mall, or sprinting after a grand-child who looks like she wants to hurl herself into a rain-swollen creek, or suffering a restless two hours in a theater watching a libtard movie, I can see the pistol working its way out. Do those of you who do concealed carry consider a retention strap across the 'hammer area' to be important? These holsters aren't cheap and I want to buy right the first time. P.S. I just got my CCW permit today. Hooray, the State has given me permission to exercise my constitutional right. I feel good about that, sort of. The picture on my gun license looks OK. It's now in a government database. Hm. Too late to change my mind.
