  1. Man dies after being shot over parking space in Queens, mom says - New York Daily News - May 6, 2014 http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/nyc-crime/son-died-shot-parking-space-mom-article-1.1781377 Man shoots self at Kingsport Christmas tree lot - Times News - December 2, 2013 http://www.timesnews.net/article/9070501/man-shot-at-kingsport-christmas-tree-lot You won't often lose money betting on humans being stupid. Even so, this ain't CCW action.
  2. Now I gotta disagree with that pic. I hate spiders. Wasps attack spiders and feed the spiders to their kids in the nest. Now if you don't like wasps, put out wren houses. Wrens are really aggressive and respectable hunting birds, and feed wasps to their kids in the nest. Or just plain eat 'em. What I've found out here on the farm is that if you don't like wasps or spiders, put out wren houses. They take care of business.
  3. Here in Iowa we have Menards, which is a store that sells lumber, hardware, and all sorts of other stuff -- including flashlights. Some of their flashlights are LED, and my calipers say the flashlight body is exactly 1.0" Now it seems to me, a pair of scope mounts and one of these $2.99 flashlights would fit just fine on a rail on a rifle. Maybe someone here with extra scope mounts could go out and put one or more of these cheapo flashlights to the test on a rifle. Wouldn't it be funny if these el cheapo thingers worked just fine in that application? Sure would be embarrassing.
  4. I'd rather confront a drunk guy driving a car, than a drunk guy holding a gun. IMHO drunk shooting is worse than drunk driving. There's probably statistics on this if someone wants to do some Google-foo.
  5. Here in Iowa, the CCW permit becomes instantly invalid with any consumption of alcohol. You don't have to be legally drunk. It's totally zero-tolerance. In general circumstances, it comes down to who you trust. Here on the farm, we do a lot of shooting of our guns and each others' guns, and it's all cool because we know each other and everyone is safety conscious. If I'm in a movie theater, though, and some guy I don't know walks in with a rifle, well, I just have to wonder if it wouldn't be a good idea to pop him before he starts shooting into the crowd. And that's a real problem with open carry. But there's a problem with the perception of 'evil' long guns, especially if they're 'black'. More of the bigger mass shootings have been done with pistols. It's all a mess.
  6. Here in Iowa we're under a tornado warning until 3 am. I wonder if a tornado would wake me up in time to move to the basement, as I plan to be in bed for most of this.
  7. So rumors that Timney has fixed this problem with military primers are exaggerated? I recently bought some milsurp .308 NATO made in Portugal and am now prepared to be bummed out.
  8. I am getting the impression that the firearms industry beats all the others for generous defects and returns policies.
  9. This kind of thing is what happens when people think the Second Amendment is about defense of the home.
  10. Friends, Nosing around on Ebay, I came across the "Luth-ar Fixed AR Modular PRS Sniper Stock" and went looking for more info since it seemed like an option to the MagPul PRS stock, that some people call "a boat anchor". A fairly recent review (April 15) of the stock is found here, and apparently, that's all that's available. The website for the buttstock is here, and features only one short testimonial. Compared to the MagPul offering, the pricing and adjustability of the Luth-AR look pretty tempting. I wonder if anyone here has this buttstock and could have something to say about it, but maybe it's too new on the market. According to the review I mentioned above, the stock "will work on any AR-15/AR-10 rifle that accepts a buffer tube." I have to wonder if that's true, and if the stock would fit on my DPMS LR-308. Don't the AR-15 and the LR-308 buffer tubes have different dimensions? It doesn't look like Midway or Brownell's carry the stock, but it looks like you can order it through Luth-AR's website.
  11. Sure hope you can do this without losing any data.
  12. Compatibility is when you have DPMS and Armalite in your house, near to each other. And being nice to all of them. Although, being all-DPMS, well. I have some Ruger and some Marlin, and a Star Firestar. So I guess that makes me tolerant of diversity. Sort of. I think the Star needs a new barrel.
  13. Maybe it boils down to what people expect in what situation. People who go to a movie theater or a grade school, don't expect to encounter people with AR-pattern rifles. So, someone there with a CCW permit and armed would be inclined to bust a few caps on the guy with the rifle. Everyone else would run for the exits and stomp each other, resulting in boot-prints on their foreheads etc. and taking trips on ambulances, etc. Interestingly, the far-left libtards don't want armed security in schools because it would make students accustomed to seeing weapons as a normal part of normality. They want people to be frightened of guns, even in places where they should be. So there's problems on all ends of the spectrum, and a real shortage of ideas on what to do that's realistic and civilized.
  14. Open carry of assault weapons is probably fairly common in bars and taverns in the Ukraine. And likely everyone is very cool with that, except for the guys on the other side of the argument, who are also gunned up. And over there, they ain't shooting up bars and taverns. So it's more a matter of what frightens citizens, who are prisoners of the popular press. "We don't ask for permission or call anybody. We're trying to make this as normal as possible," said Kory Watkins, the Tarrant County group's coordinator. Okay, cool enough. He wants unarmed civilians in Texas to feel like what it's like to live in the Ukraine. Or not. Maybe. This isn't a simple, easy issue.
  15. Ripley, just nosing around here and there on the internet, other discussion groups are bringing up the same topic, the same way. Here's an article that's fairly in depth that you might like: http://stateoftactical.com/new-dpms-308-r-25-gen-ii/ Like I said in another thread, I'll try talking my son into getting a Gen II so he can let me shoot it, at which point I'll be happy to report back. I personally have a DPMS LR-308T and gosh, she could stand to lose some weight, but the more I spend on her, the more I like her, and well, me getting a Gen II would be like being unfaithful.
  16. 22 States Have Signed on to Oppose New York’s Gun Ban - The Blaze - May 8, 2014 http://www.theblaze.com/stories/2014/05/08/22-states-have-signed-on-to-oppose-new-yorks-gun-ban/ [excerpted] The New York Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement Act of 2013, better known as the NY SAFE Act, bans possession of semi-automatic weapons that opponents call “assault weapons;” bans high-capacity magazines; expands background checks for gun buyers and gun dealers; and bans the Internet sale of guns, among other restrictions. While nearly half of all U.S. states have joined in opposition to New York’s law already, the top plaintiff in the case expects more states to join. “While the ban only applies to New York at this time, the federal court’s upholding of the gun ban sets a concerning precedent interpreting limitations on Second Amendment rights of all law-abiding citizens including here in South Dakota,” South Dakota Attorney General Marty J. Jackley said in a statement. “An outright ban on semi-automatic weapons used for self-defense and hunting purposes violates the Second Amendment.” Edit: P.S. IMHO, it's becoming dangerously common for people who support the Second Amendment to rest their case on "self-defense and hunting" activities. A claim the S. Dakota AG repeats. While those are fine uses for firearms, the 2d Am is about a civilian militia -- which is grounded fundamentally in the notion of armed insurrection against government tyranny. It's a veto power vested in the fourth branch of government -- the people. Protecting your garden from rabbits by putting them in the stew-pot is not in the Constitution, though it certainly is an extra benefit.
  17. It's only a matter of time until a concerned citizen with a CCW permit, thinking that he's stopping a mass shooting, blows away a member of civilian militia doing an 'open carry' with a rifle. Open Carry Texas distances itself from Tarrant County followers - KHOU - May 9, 2014 http://www.khou.com/news/texas-news/Open-Carry-Texas-distances-itself-from-Tarrant-County-followers-258611871.html [excerpted] "A Texas gun-rights group known for openly carrying firearms has distanced itself from a local affiliate after police said armed members entered fast-food restaurants and frightened employees and customers twice in recent weeks." "Open Carry Texas has a policy that authorities must be notified in advance and that demonstrators should carry flags with the group's logo, according to founder C.J. Grisham."
  18. I just got my new low-profile upper receiver for my DPMS LR-308. It took exactly 7 days from order to arrival! Thank you DPMS! Soon, my will be fixed! My original order is at #264.
  19. I had to Google the term 'cowinkidink'. It's supposed to be Irish slang for 'coincidence'.
  20. I went to gunbot.net and looked for subsonic .308 ammo. One of the more interesting rounds is the -- a hunting round. It comes with a caution, that "these rounds will not cycle a semi-auto firearm." This may be a common issue with subsonics in .308, although I can say that subsonic .22lr cycles just fine in my Ruger 10/22. Also interesting is that a lot of these rounds consider themselves to be "match" ammo. Here's the selection I found at gunbot: 20rds - 308 Win. Lapua 200gr. 21. "Flippin" -- that would be British cops. Or maybe Jamaican.
  22. Can you confirm that you need subsonic loads to make the suppressor work the way you want? My experiments with .22lr indicated that the bullet going supersonic made more noise than the muzzle blast, which would leave you with a noisy suppressed rifle unless you're running subsonics. Buddy of mine put a suppressor on a .22 and he was real bummed about how loud it was. Now that we're on the topic of suppressors, I have to wonder if anyone here has played around with "solvent traps". Supposedly, you put an automotive oil filter onto the rifle's muzzle and that "traps" your solvents while you are cleaning the bore. Nod nod, wink wink, LOL, LULZ and ROTFLMAO, these are disposable suppressors. Anybody try one a them? These "solvent traps" would be worthless on most firearms--as suppressors--because the automotive oil filter has such a huge diameter that the sights are too low and you couldn't sight around them. But with AR-type rifles, the sights are so high above the bore that you won't have that interference. Controversy rages on whether a "solvent trap" is actually a suppressor in the eyes of the BATFE. Basically, when you buy one of these critters, all you get is a threaded adapter that screws on to where you have your flash hider or muzzle brake. By itself, it does nothing for noise. You have to add the oil filter to get the suppression. All I know is, nobody's been arrested or charged yet on supplying or possessing suppressors based on automotive oil filters. But if you search tne 'net, the adapters for the "solvent traps" for firearms are everywhere.
  23. Did I see a Ford GT in that group of pix? The Ford GT might be the most beautiful car ever built. Unless it's the first edition of the Olds Toronado. Or the Cord. Or the Saab Sonett.
  24. Here's more of a dangerous trend... Y'all probably remember the EPA raid on a gold mine in Alaska that triggered federal probe. You may also remember when EPA agents raided an ammunition company on alleged ‘environmental violations’. Well, there's new news. The office of the Inspector General says the EPA is being actively uncooperative and dismissive of investigations. The EPA is even said to exist in 'a shadowy world'. Let's not forget that the EPA shut down the only lead smelter in the US. On environmental grounds, we suppose? Likely the result will be that the US has to import ammunition to make up the slack -- putting Obama and the Executive branch in charge of ammo imports to the US. Like the Bureau of Land Management, the Environmental Protection Agency is a rogue bureaucracy. The problem we have is that the President "doesn't know anything until he sees it on television" about what all the many agencies do.
  25. Psst I want to talk him into getting a DPMS Gen II .308, a nice lightweight tool for all sorts of different troubles and other things. I would get to shoot it, too. ^-^
