I ken shoot plum cross Bubba's corn field, his pig pin, an slam to the other side uv Billy Joe's spechel flowerin weed field (that stuff don't smell like turbacca but seems he gits a lota enjoyment outa smokn it). Thank fer yer help an Y'all come set a spell. -

MANY years ago (more than I care to think about) at the tender age of 12 or so, I saved up my pennies and nickles and for a whoppin' $39.95 at the local Pawn Shop, bought my first "Deer Rifle". It was a war surplus 7mm Mauser (can't remember what country it came from) and it had a spring loaded screw in the stock under the barrel. At the time I didn't know what it was but then I learned that it was a "tunable damper" to help control barrel vibrations. Leap forward 40 years and the glass bedding job I did on my .270 Win. Remington 700. I bedded the action and "free-floated" the barrel by rasping out the channel and the accuracy went to Hell in a hand basket. Oh Crap! What did I do? A gunsmith friend took the rifle (all the while describing my lack of parentage and discussing some rather unsavory personal habits), added a small mound of bedding at the very end of the stock (not more than 1/2" dia.) and wonder of wonders the 700 shot 1/2 MOA consistently. That was many years ago and the rifle still shoots to point of aim. I'm a Mechanical Engineer and have a pretty good understanding of harmonics but that lesson stuck! Maybe I'm in the minority, but I'm not a fan of free floating barrels. I think the old gun makers that put vibration dampers close to the muzzle were on to something!

Y'all know how it is, I got this here new LR-308 gun offa lay a way an 'bout runned outta munny so I dint have a bunch left over fer wun a them fancy telly scopic sites. Feller at the pawn shop says, "I got this here good ole Weaver K-4 what wuz on my Daddy's squirrel gun an y'all kin have it fer $15". Well I tookt it an put it on that there new gun an it looked purty good 'till long 'bout the third shot when I heered a spoink sound an wun uv them glass thangs fell rite out on the shootin table! Well, I kin tell you I wuz some kinda upset with that there feller in the pawn shop fer sellin me a de fek tiv shootin site. So I dun whut any ole Hillbilly ud do, I went down in the holler an runned off a couple gallons uv shine (dint drank much but hit wuz rite temptin!) an sold it to a feller I knowed what works fer the Sherrif. Then, seein as how I had me some munny, I went back to the pawn shop fer 'nuther site. He had wun a them Nye Cons whut he said wuz made fer a big ole gun but whut wuz named after a purty little orange butterfly (whoda thunkit?). Put thatun on with them reel tall mountin thangs he gimme and that ole gun shoots reel good and them glass thangs don't fall out no more! Only problem I got now is that if'n I want ta shoot reel fur (like maybe 'cross Bubba's big ole corn field an pig pen) how can I git me some more elevation when I dun 'bout runned out uv clicks on that there twisty thang on top? If'n Y'all got any idears I'd be rite appreciative. Thankee, now y'all come on over an set a spell (I mite be coaxed out uv a sip er two uv good ole Tennessee "Sprang Water")!

Thanks for the info Gentlemen. I ordered a CS spring for the .308 but they sent one marked for AR-15. Contacted Tubb and they said they would send the correct one but haven't seen it yet. I put the one I received in my 15 just to see if it fit and indeed noticed a difference in the sound of the sproing (I kinda like that word!) but even more in the sound of the bolt closing. It sounds more solid with the CS spring and the rifle doesn't have the "rebound" I've noticed with the original spring so when I get the replacement for the .308, I'll have them charge my card and just keep both! I'll smoke up some ammo this weekend and see if there is any change in the important stuff.

Damn, Unforgiven, where'd you git that there picher uv Betty Sue? I thought Bubba had sold all them thangs to Penthouse!

You young whipper-snappers don't know what fun wuz! We were too poor to buy a sonic blaster so we had to make do with home-made toys! Back 'long 'bout '60, '62 er so, me an my big brother decided to build us a "Spud Gun" (y'all might remember those) so we got us a piece of 1/2" copper, screwed on a cap, drilled in a touch hole, squirted in a drip or two of Dad's cigerette lighter fluid, stuck a piece of potatoe in the other end and lit 'er off! Real satisfyin' bang and the pro-jec-tile wound up pokin a hole in the plaster in the kitchen wall. Mom was not happy and neither me nor my brother could out run the switchin' (somethin' about bein' held by one arm and whupped in a circle). Well, after we recovered from that we decided to try the next step outside! In true Hillbilly fashion, we decided that if a 1/2" diameter piece of spud would hole a wall, a whole spud might be more interestin'. We found a piece of 2" pipe with a cap, drilled our touch hole. stuffed in a whole spud, and tried the lighter fluid again ... not enough umph ... OK how 'bout some powder out of Dad's shotgun shells? Is one enough? Prob'ly not, how 'bout a dozen, that ought to be enough! Well, kids, the ONLY thing we did right was to decide not to hold the thing! Snuck it out to the barn, stuck it between two hay bales, stuck a "light it anywhere" match in the touch hole, lit the match and lit out ourselves. To this day I swear that ligthnin' hit that barn and started that fire ... just lucky our neighbor was a volunteer fireman and heard the thunder! I don't think Mom (or Dad) believed our story and we got to practice runnin' in a circle again!

I'm game, how do we bid and what's the starting point (no pun intended)?

What made you decide to move to the 308 AR/AR-10 Platform?
Dracomeister replied to imschur's topic in General Discussion
Well, one'st upon a time I wuz a walkin' down the road wit my trusty AR-15 and I seed this here big ole buck deer jest a standin there in this feller's yard and I figured, whut the heck, it close to opinin' day, so I took me a close aim an shot that sucker! Durn, he dint even move, so I smoked him again and still nothin. That wuz one tough deer! 'bout the time I wuz a drawin' down on him fer the third time the little ole lady that lived in the house cum out on the porch an jest give me a real toung lashin' 'bout shootin' up her archery target! Rite then an there I determined I needed somethin' that would shoot further out so's she couldn't see it was me what was shootin' up her target! 'Sides which, who ever heard uv any body what needed a target to practice on when there's real deer jest a wanderin' through? LR-.308 vs. AR-15 ... Range, range, and more range! -
I drive about 50K a year mostly on trips of 4+ hours. I started checking audio books out of the local Public Library and it worked great. My better half got me an I-Pod for our 40th Anniversary this year and I found out I can download the books from the Library to the I-Pod and it works even better! Love to listen while driving, makes the trip go so much faster!

Robocop, too late! Already set up a Brownell's account for all the other toy's, just hoping the wife doesn't notice that this one is more expensive to play with! -
OK Folks, I warned you up front that I would be picking your brains, so here goes. I've been using flatwire springs in my work (Industrial Refrigeration) for many years simply because they hold up better than round wire springs. My question is this, does the Tubb CS Flatwire spring work better/last longer than the stock round wire? I'm interested in any details. Thanks

So there I was, just a mindin' my own business in my local gunstore when this here masked guy walks in holdin' a 'Possum by the scruff of the neck and threatenin' to do the pore thang in if'n I didn't plop down some money and buy me wun-a-them funny lookin' AR guns. Well shoot fire fuzzy, I couldn't let him do unspeaksble things to that pore critter so I dun whut he said an bought me a DPMS Oricle .308. Saved the 'Possum but my wife thought the ransom was a mite high! (That's my story and I'm stickin to it!) Recently built my retirement home in Beautiful Downtown Hilham, TN and moved up from Atlanta (talk about culture shock!). I've been a fan of AR's for years and wanted a .308 to go with my bolt gun but then realized that I needed to find a site where my sheer stupidity would mostly be overlooked and I could find out what I needed to know to get the most out of the new weapon. Spent 27 years in Uncle Sam's Greater U.S. Canoe Club, the last 17 in Small Boat Units so I'm familiar with the M-16 A-1 and A-2, M-60, SAW, and Ma Duce. Found this site from Yahoo's search page and immediately Bookmarked it. Looking forward to pickin' your brains. Y'all come on over an set a spell.
