  1. Just my $0.02 worth but the transformer would experience two "losses" even when not under load, hysteresis and eddy current. Neither is a big deal from an electrical standpoint but both create some thermal loading. Typically, in open air, the heat generated is radiated to the atmosphere and is not an issue. If you want to prevent the possibility of heating up the safe, you might consider breaking the hot lead of the primary (120v) circuit with a door switch, that way the transformer is "dead" until you open the door. Like a refrigerator, a fire safe is insulated so any heat generated inside will tend to stay inside, even a couple of watts will eventually raise the temp in the box. :)
  2. Oh Crap, he's hooked! I dropped an SSA-E in the AR and it worked like a champ. Liked it so much I put one in the LR-308. Welcome aboard, you'll learn so much from the guys on this site that you might even get the mistaken notion that they actually know what they are doing!
  3. Coors??? We got us a few Mason jars uv good ole Tennessee Sprang Water but I recon Coors ud be a good chaser! Y'all come on down an set a spell. Micro, where's yer Ex, we mite be kin!
  4. Being a borderline prepper has its advantages in everyday life. Many good books on the subject but my favorites are actually novels, "Alas Babylon" and "One Second After". For in depth prepper info I like "Without Rule of Law" and "Holding Your Ground" by Joe Nobody. And, of course, no Prepper Library is complete without the "Foxfire" series.
  5. Shoot Fire fuzzy, I ain't got but 'bout 65 acres an ain't got no neighbors closern 'bout haf a mile, so ifn its nice I meander down to the hunnert yard shootin bench an ifn its a rainin' I jist sets on the porch an shoots out across the pasture. Maw gits a bit peevish ifn I don't warn her but she gits over it. Tree lines 'bout 250 yards and ain't nobody lives out that direction for nigh onta 10 miles. Got plenny uv deer an coyote targets runnin cross the field (but theys bin gittin a mite skittish heer lately). Heer a while back I set up wun a them bullet speed measurin thangys out yonder bout a hunert yards but I recon that bullet wuzzent where it wuz spose ta be cause now I ain't got no bullet speed measurin thangy no more. Y'all want sum parts?
  6. HOO WEE, Matt, that there is smokin'! 'Minds me uv wun a them new fangled guns my ole lady uses on her XBox shootemup games. I rekon y'all kud use them holes ta hold bout dozen squirls, jist stick there tales throu the holes an snatch em bak inta the lil slots, thatud hold um I ga ron tee!
  7. Just saw this and, as usual, it's politics and finger pointing! Can't we just shut Washington down? (This is just an excerpt from the AP feed.) WASHINGTON (AP) — Two Republican lawmakers on Saturday accused President Barack Obama of breaking the law by approving the release of five Afghan detainees held at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, in exchange for a U.S. soldier believed held by Islamist insurgents for five years. The White House agreed that actions were taken in spite of legal requirements and cited "unique and exigent circumstances" as justification. Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, 28, of Hailey, Idaho, was handed over to U.S. special operations forces by the Taliban. In return, five Afghans who were held at a U.S. detention facility in Cuba were released to the custody of the government of Qatar, which served as a go-between in negotiations for the trade. Rep. Howard "Buck" McKeon of California and Sen. James Inhofe of Oklahoma said in a statement that Obama is required by law to notify Congress 30 days before any terrorists are transferred from the U.S. facility. They said Obama also is required to explain how the threat posed by such terrorists has been substantially mitigated.
  8. Recently installed a Geissele SSA-E ($200 at my LGS) in my LR-308 ... OMG!!!!!!! I didn't realize just how "gritty" the stock trigger was. Dropped my groups by 1/2" and followup shots are on in no time! Wife 'bout had a cow when she saw the receipt but she got over it (I hope). Shootin' buddy has an AR-15 with the G2S and that is a slick ride too. Don't think you can go wrong with either.
  9. Gnat, I carry a RIA Compact 1911 in a Crossbreed IWB holster. Made out of horsehide it conforms to my strong side carry position so well that in shorts and a Tee shirt you can't see it. A bit pricy ($125) but IMHO the best deep cover holster out there. I have several other holsters I've tried over the years but none have a strap and I like the Crossbreed best of all.
  10. Robertson Racing's Ford GT (they have a test mule at Road Atlanta), that one is their IMSA GT car from the Petit a couple of years ago.
  11. Never got in to Roundy Round Racing, did some drag racing in my youth (E Altered) but I prefer things that go fast and turn both directions! :) Here are a couple of favorites.
  12. Until it blows your @$$ over the side! ::)
  13. Not anal! I have the same thing with the sales slip attached. The Insurance Company requires "Positive Proof of Ownership" and I ain't takin' no chances! Also, several years ago my Dad had a .38 stolen from his home. He didn't want to report it stolen because he thought a family member had taken it (turned out to be the kid next door). We finally talked him in to reporting it stolen and two years later it was used in an armed robbery where the perp got capped (not the kid next door). Local LEO said it was a good thing he reported it stolen WITH the serial number otherwise they would have been asking him some serious questions about how the poor deceased cherub managed to get his innocent little hands on the piece.
  14. This one is, IMHO, the most beautiful auto ever made. Unfortunately, THIS is what mine looks like at present ... But I'm workin' on it!
  15. Done! Ordered one, should be delivered next week (when I just happen to be on vacation) so I'll work it out and see what happens. I also have access to a decibel meter and some fairly accurate pressure meters (within 0.005" WC) so I'll test for blast pressure as well. Hey, I just installed my new SSA-E trigger assembly so I get to work it out too! Gee, I love new toys!
  16. OK, so I'm not a Rocket Scientist but it seems to me that the recoil reducing effect of a brake is in part caused by re-directing high velocity gasses rearward (Newton's Laws). If those same gasses are then re-directed forward inside the shroud, that would seem to cancel the effect, though with a microsecond delay. One mitigating effect may be the decrease in gas temperature and pressure caused by expansion into the brake (like a muffler). While I believe this effect would be minimal, it could reduce pressure transients significantly (Nozzle Effect). Reducing the gas velocity should, in turn, reduce the forward thrust effect. I have a standard brake on my LR-308 and it works perfectly (recoil is no more than my AR-15) but the damn thing is deafening, I may blow $50 bucks for one of these and see if it makes any difference.
  17. "Went straight from GS to range and shot 12 more rounds before I had to come to work." Don't ya just hate it when ya gotta take time away from the range to go to work!
  18. +1 on the Magpul mags, I have several and have never had a failure to feed from anything (from 130 gn soft points to 180 gn Ballistic Tips). I also have a bunch of DPMS factory 10 and 19 round mags (the 19s are called 20 round but good luck getting the last round in!). Haven't had any real issues from any of them either but IMHO stick with the Magpul and you won't go wrong.
  19. And all these years everybody has told me that guns and alcohol don't mix ... glad you proved them wrong! Gonna be good lookin' rig!
  20. Congrats Matt, your wife did a fine job ... But where's his AR?
  21. Well there I wuz a walkin home frum the Church Corn Shuckin wit my dog Sue. She's a purty good ole hound but she's got a steak smart ass in er bout half a rick wide. I wuz a stickin out my thumb but wern't nobody stoppin on acount a Sue. Bout the time I hit rout 11 here cum wun a them bellerin snortin 427 cubic inch gofast machines. Well the boy got er stopped and tol me he cud gimme a ride but ole Sue woodn't fit. I toll him that wuz OK cause she'd jist run along side. Well brother, lemme tell ya, that ole boy done fired that big ole sporty car up an off we goed. Bout 30 mile an hour and he askd where wuz my dog. I looked out an toll him she wuz a keep up. That boy jish pushed down on them peddles and smoked up sum rubber and run plum up ta bout 60. He kinda grinned over at me an askd where ole Sue wuz now an I toll him she wuz OK an still keepin up. Well I think that kinda got under his skin a bit cause next I nooed he dun grabbed up nuther cuppla geers an we wuz a doin bout near two hunnert. It wuz fair excitin I tell you whut! Well he ast me agin where Sue wuz an I looked out ta make sure she wuz still there and toll him she wuz fine but that seemed ta really tick him off. Next thang I nooed he dun showered done on them big ole carbon brakes and cum to a complete tar smokin stop in what seemed like 35 feet flat! He jumped out the car, run aroun an jist stood there a lookin at ole Sue who wuz jist sittin there wit a smart ass smile on er face, a pantin a bit and likkin her chops. He looked roun an ast "whats that ring roun her neck?" I had ta look ta see what he was a talkin bout an I says " Aw, thats just her ass hole, she ain't used ta stoppin that fast!"
  22. Sorry Brother, I'd give it to you but Uncle Sam made me give it back before I could retire!
  23. Howdy, NTX, welcome aboard from the Hills of Tennessee. Had an Uncle lived in Austin years ago who was an absolute dyed-in-the-wool Texan! I told him once that the only place I ever wanted to be in Texas was the exact geographic center of the state ... he bit, asked why? I told him 'cause that way, any direction I drove I'd be leaving! Funny, he didn't invite me back and I didn't get remembered in his will! Y'all come and visit when y'all can set a spell!
  24. Yep, the 10' was the first one I built about 30 years ago. Based on the Wee Lassie design and weighs in at 16#, the one beside it is a 12'-6" C-1 solo boat I built for light white water (class 3 and below) that weighs in at a whoppin' 19#. I also have a triple seat "Barge" 15'-9" we use for canoe camping that is fairly heavy at 55# (you can solo it but it is a real bitch!). The creek boat I sold to a friend and he uses it for fly fishing for Trout in small rivers. It is 12'-6" and weighs about 50#. I've probably designed and built 40 boats for friends over the past 30 years and plan to build more as my "retirement" job. If you get interested in building a strip boat let me know and I'll send you an AutoCAD drawing file you can have full size frame drawings printed from. They are as much fun to build as they are to use! Go catch some big ones!
  25. Haven't been in three years (building our retirement home) but plan to go pretty soon. Love to fish the small out of the way creeks and rivers from a 10' solo canoe or 12' creek boat using ultra light tackle (2# test). On that rig a 1/2# Bream is a battle!
