  1. I wanted to give a quick and dirty review on the double tap defense chambered in 45acp. First off, DONT FIRE +P ROUNDS THROUGH IT! You will need stitches... Long story short, I was dared to shoot a double tap defense. I will accept any "I dare you to shoot this" challenge, as long as it is within reason (built by a manufacture) they said "if you only shoot one barrel, your a wussy". Thats not exactly what they said, but you get the idea. I said, im actually interested in this firearm, can I shoot +p safely through it? They (the gun shop owner) said yes. So I pulled my 1911 out, stripped a couple rounds of hornady tap fpd, walked outside, and threw them in. I pulled the trigger (its like an inch long pull), and I couldn't believe how much pain I was in. At first, all I heard was my friend laughing, and i thought "im going to have to shoot the next round with my left hand..." Then I heard what sounded like a leaking faucet, and me and my buddy simultaneously looked down, to see the gun and the floor literally covered in blood. You would think I hit a dang artery! Anyways, my buddy yelled inside for paper towels. It turns out that both barrels fired simultaneously, and ripped through about 2.5" of skin, from the middle/front of my thumb back. Here is the cleanest picture I have. So anyways, your not supposed to shoot Plus p through the firearm, but when I did some research, it turns out this has happened to quite a few other people, even who didn't use Plus p. The worst part of the story is that I had to go to the va hospital... :/
  2. Ill post pictures and specs on my slings in a different area, and link them here. Ill also post a two round review on the double tap defense and post a link here :-)
  3. The sharp edge is shown here The bolt releases poor fit can be seen here
  4. To be honest, I haven't taken the rail out of the package. It is a Midwest industries ss gii rail, for the Ar15. When i saw the Midwest industries came out with a rail specifically for the GII, I called them and asked if mine would fit. They said no, and they said alot of people in the industry were a little frustrated when dpms advertised that ar15 rails would fit. Apparently only dpms' ar15 rails fit. Which kinda sucks, because the only rail that M.I. makes for the GII right now is a keymod... and I am not all in on the keymod deal. I was hoping M.I. would exchange my rail for the GII rail, as they are the same price, but I have to go through the distributor from whom I purchase the rail from, which is midwayusa. Midwayusa doesnt have the GII rail yet, and they dont know when they will get it, so now I have to send my rail back to them and buy directly from Midwest industries. Its a conundrum I wish I could have avoided. DPMS has had excellent cs in my experience, but the logistics of this issue are irritating :/
  5. Hey, I posted a new short review on the GII if you guys are interested.
  6. Hey guys, sorry it has been so long since i reported on the GII. I will post a link to all the past info I posted for anyone just catching up. I have had quite a few distractions from the range to include trying to start a new business making slings having a weapon malfunction and rip my hand open (I suggest everyone stays away from the double tap defense) And throwing my dang back out! :/ Anyways, I I have made a couple of modifications that I feel are helpful. First off, I dumped the magpul moe grip... I didn't like it, although the storage is very nice. If anyone would like to purchase or trade for it, let me know. I need 308 and 45acp reloading supplies! It was replaced with the hogue grip. Its my #1 suggestion on any Ar or ak platform. Next to go were the magpul mbus sights. Dont get me wrong, these sights are GREAT! I personally believe they are superior to any other back up sight by design, not material, because although they are IMHO ugly, they lock in the down position, instead of locking up. This means if you have your sights deployed and drop your firearm, the sights simply close, instead of bending or breaking. I went with a combo of troy dioptic and diamondhead sights, because I personally like the diamond aperture, and the cross hairs on the troy. And they look cool. Oh well, the mbus sights went onto my training rifle. One thing that I believe needs to be changed is the rail. THE GII PLATFORM DOES NOT ACCEPT ALL AR15 FORENDS LIKE DPMS ADVERTISED!!! I wish they had not advertised this, as I was going to have it set up with an identical rail to my trainer for training purposes. Fail. Ill have to send it back and go a different route. The stock rail is HEAVY, uncomfortable, and over sized. Ok! To the meat and potatoes! So far I have fired 110 rnds with no malfunctions. It has fired cheap zq1 ammo, Winchester white box, as well as handloads as light as 43 grains imr4064 (minimum suggested load) It doesnt seem to care if ammo is crimped or uncrimped. Regardless of ammo, it has been ejecting to the 3 o clock, and if I do my part, it will put all the brass in a nice little pile. I have been shooting about 5" 5 shot groups at 100 yards, but I am using iron sights and its windy. But most importantly, im not a great shot ;-) Regardless, the barrel is not fully broken in, and I have no doubt that with the right shooter and optics, this would be a 1 moa shooter. Oh! Also worth noting, the two stage trigger is NICE. in fact, I installed the exact same two stage trigger into my training rifle, and it doesnt break nearly as cleanly. I am VERY happy with the GII recons two stage trigger. (not all models of GII come with this trigger) There are a few aesthetic things to note about the platform. The bolt release button really doesnt fit the the relief in the upper receiver well. It is tall and narrow, and the relief is short and square, so the button mars the finish a bit. The lower receiver is wider than the upper in the rear where the buffer tube screws in, so sometimes if you aren't careful, when you charge the weapon, your finger will smash that edge... it sounds lame, but it can be fairly uncomfortable. But this isn't a custom firearm. Its a mass produced piece, that I feel will set a new standard in the market. If you have any questions at all, feel free to ask, and i will do my best to answer them properly. I will continue to update as I can. Here is the previous GII link that i wrote up. It has some good pictures of the funky internals.
  7. I read that review, and it was good for stats, but I am more excited to hear first hand reviews. :-) Mossbergs offering might not exactly be my cup of tea, but in my opinion, the more competition, the better.
  8. It looks like no one has touched on this yet, but Mossberg has come out with a 308ar! You know these rifles has become popular when a company like Mossberg will go WAY out of their comfort zone to build one! I hope it is a good quality shooter at a decent price, and I hope it is fully dpms compatible :-) It is called the MMR. Sadly, it looks to have a carbine length gas system on a 20 inch barrel. But I like the look of the rail they put on it! But it also comes with a stark pistol grip... for me, this is a definite turn off. I can't wait to hear from someone who buys one! msrp is full camo is about 1500. it can also be had in camo furniture only, and all black
  9. The crimp line is very shallow. Do I need to crimp harder? Or should I just experiment?
  10. That was a very interesting article! I would need to lock my rifle into a sled to find that perfect load though, thats for sure, because right now with iron sights, no spotting scope, and a backpack to rest the rifle on... I dont have the ability to find an accurate load. I need to work first on becoming an accurate shooter!
  11. Yeah the hand press is great! As long as I clean my cases well, and lubricate them enough, even resizing is super easy. I guess it is easy to say the process has been enjoyable before you have pulled the trigger lol. Can anyone post a picture of a properly crimped 308 case? Using the Lee crimped, I simply got a very small line just below the mouth of the case. Ill post a picture tomorrow.
  12. Very cool! I def need to work on case prep for precision. I dont have a tumbler or a case trimmer. As it is, I hand primed all the ammo i did, and i could feel exactly what you are talking about. And i measured every charge exactly, which often to two, three, or more tries. The Lee scale doesn't like to lock the slide portion of the scale in place, so I have to make sure it hasn't moved for each round. Once I get more Lee scoopers, measuring with that scale will be easier, so that will be nice. Right now I am trying to play with small changes to look at accuracy, like crimp vs non crimp, etc, without me touching any other variables. But I do have a separate pile of ammo for plinking only. Not that I am a precision shooter, or that this will be a accurate round. Its all cheap components and tools. Anyways, im learning. I appreciate everyones input!
  13. Well I am using a Lee bullet seater, so I set it to put a case to the cannalure, matching the factory loaded ammo, and I left the setting there. So although I am not doing any trimming, I just used the cannelure to get me into the ball park compared to the ammo I had it compared to. Thanks for all the info! Utilizing what I have, I will just shoot the rounds. There is a ton of knowledge on this forum! I know I will learn quickly, and i cant wait. There is so many thing to learn for reloading, especially when it comes to precision reloading.
  14. Any advice on pulling the bullets out without damaging the bullets? Or should just get vice grip out and say bye bye to the bullets?
  15. I just reloaded my first ever 20 rnds using a Lee hand press. I used mke headstamped once fired brass (fired by me)(Turkish) CCI large rifle primers Imr4064 (43 grains, minimum load according to Lee for 150 grain bullet) M80 147 grain surplus bullets Starting out, the Lee directions tell you where to set the bullet seater in the press, but it says nothing about how to adjust it at the top, so I started with the top screwed in all the way, as it came, and gradually moved up until I got it to match the zq1 Turkish factory loaded ammo I have. This brought me right to the cannalure (sp) Here are the results The round to the left is factory loaded. My question is what should I do with the first four rounds? Should i just yank the bullet, resize, and re seat? Can I resize the bullet with power and primer inside if I am careful? Any advice on this, or generally any reloading would be much appreciated. BTW, all brass was full length sized, but next time i shoot I will try to fire form my brass with the collet die.
  16. You cant order either, the single barrel will shoot either.
  17. The rfb has an extra thick (I dont remember the dimensions) metal plate under the cheek weld to ensure that any catastrophic detonation would be aimed down and away from the shooter. When you handle the rfb, the quality is immediately noticeable, it definitely has a heft to it, and it feels rock solid. Although I have not fired the weapon, since it is something keltec directly designed for, and since it does feel so well built, I personally would have no safety concerns if I got to fire the weapon. Honestly, when handed a weapon, I have never really considered putting it on a sled and pulling the trigger with a string. Its a precaution I have never felt the need to take. (If I was rolling something really hot myself this will change, but I dont see myself doing that)
  18. I will be putting more full review up on YouTube soon. :-)
  19. So far I can only tell you that my accuracy sucks lol But into plan on putting glass on it and seeing what the rifle can do. I have high expectations. For me, I dont believe I will have any issues with heat. I wont be doing any mag dumps. When shooting at a fairly typical range rate (maybe 5-10 rpm), I noticed no substantial heat build up. (Not that I grabbed the barrel) Next weekend I will be shooting a bit more, and I have started reloading, which will help me out alot.
  20. The old cyclones sure were cool :-) What ebr is doing right now is very exciting. Its good to see. It is great to know a certain rifle can be ran dry for a time. I will never try it. It will simply increase wear, which I do not want. Alot of pogs also run their m4s really, really, wet. This is also stupid. As with all things, there is a happy medium. I dont understand the current trend of talking about how long people can run their firearms dry or dirty... a good friend of mine has a bcm that he won clean because it doesn't "need" it... I dont understand it. Your firearm is a tool, and an investment. Take care of it. This is not to say that a factory rep didn't say what you claim or it didn't happen. Foolishness is everywhere, shame on that rep. And I hate that article. Sure if your a spec ops group guy with expensive new equipment in good shape its going to be reliable. Sure, if you buy name brand expensive stuff new, it should be reliable. These are not conditions the average Joe, or even the above average soldier gets. You would think in an airborne infantry riste unit you would get nice gear. False. We got crap. Guess how long I had until a jam with a proper cleaning, lubrication, and new mags? 6 mags. IF I WAS REALLY LUCKY. of course, the armorer said there was nothing wrong. More lube or less lube = more jamming. If I was in the field and running blanks, I might get 5 rounds in with a VERY tight bfa. Results will vary. With proper care, Di is very reliable. Without proper care for an extended periods of time (the real world) it can be finicky. But that article is like claiming the 2014 Camaro running royal purple is super reliable, so all chevies are really reliable, while we are still stuck in our moms Chevy Vega, pushing our feet through the floor boards and kicking along like Fred Flinstone.
  21. The rfb is a really cool weapon. I cant say anything about reliability or accuracy, but I have held a couple, and I was amazed at how ergonomic the rifle is, and how it feels SO rock steady. I am very impressed with them. The ksg IMHO is even cooler. :-) Both models of firearm are incredibly popular, and hard to get right now. Its the gun you always read about but never see.
  22. Haha, I am always surprised to see a buell reference, and equally surprised when I talk to motorcycle people, and talk about buell, and they say "who? What?" An xb12r will be mine... Anyways, I would speculate lwrc's price will remain, and quality control will diminish. But as a positive, maybe we will get a standard piston. The only good I see from this will be from the aftermarket.
  23. If you want to see problems with Colts, talk to anyone in the %1 of the army. Look could be the armourers fault, could be the number of rounds, or the number produced. But for a long time I was against any di gun because my experience with them. My opinion on di has changed, and although I know my experiences with colt is not fair, I still see them as a label. Whether we are talking ar's or 1911s The biggest thing I was surprised about with Colts Ar308 was not it ability to swap to 556, it was its weight... sheesh
  24. Look into the Eva dry. They soak up moisture, and they show when they have soaked up their maximum amount of moisture, so you can plug it in and it will dry out in a few hours. I have one and I believe it works well.
