Looking at the Aero Precision M5 complete upper, for $139 And/or the APF (Alex Pro Firearms) complete upper for $219 I've heard "You get what you pay for" but is the APF $80 better then the Aero? Both are for the high-profile DPMS 308
-
Here she is with the new SLR Rifleworks Solo installed. I like the milled-in picatinny's out one the end at 3 o'clock, 6 o'clock & 9 o'clock. The wife..."You paid $250 for that? The shades of black don't even match!" lol, fit's snug as a bug in cotton-patch-dirt rug

Found the Aero M5 for $129.95 (stripped w/fwd-assist hole<---maybe I can grow a little bonsai tree in it
-
Ahhh, my bad. Since I was a kid I've had a bad habit of taking stuff all the way apart lol
-
APF has a high-profile DPMS upper stripped@$169.99 and assembled @$219.99 at http://www.apfarmory.com/308-upper-assembly/ but it has forward-assist!!! (as if I need a big knob to smack with my palm lol) and Brownell's has the Aero M5 for $155 http://www.brownells.com/rifle-parts/receiver-parts/receivers/upper-receivers/308-ar-m5-upper-receiver-prod71789.aspx Still thunkin' it over & still looking around. Saw a good looking matched set without F/A but I don't seem to remember where that bugger is now. And shout-out to guruofhotrod for the SLR Solo lead, I think that's who shared that link. Thanks

After separating the upper from the lower, remove the buffer & spring from the buffer tube (press the pin down to let the buffer travel over it and out of the tube). Then loosen the castle-nut, being careful to hold the end-plate and not let the detent spring fly away and get lost (DPMS shows the spring being held in by the end-plate horizontally but mine is held in vertically by the grip so it may not be an issue anyway). Last, unscrew the stock from the lower receiver. Reassemble in reverse order.

It's toward the end of Feb...just wondering how long it will take me to have pics of the pair side by side. Hmmm, gotta count the cost/lots of stuff to find & buy, so for now I'll just have to settle with pics of DPMS LR-308 #1 after I get the new rail is on haha.
-
Sounds like you got it goin' on. Milling lead-sleds is a fine hobby.
-
The new SLR Solo handguard came in today, so I'm pumped. Shouldn't be no time to have her on. Already starting on the build to use the Fortis but still looking for receivers & stuff. Beats fishing too!

Cleaned, cleaned again and well lubed in between 's. Personally, I like Stoner's DI and think of AK's as the other kind but respect their impact & influence.
-
It appears the consensus is that DI is more than adequate. I plan to stick with DI, just looking for the input of others who are more experienced than I. I learn a lot from written info but nothing compares to experience.
-
If a DI was subjected to heavy military use in dirty and extreme conditions, firing a high volume hodge-podge mix of whatever ammo was available even (gasp) steel-cased, could the carbon buildup become so severe that it would require carbon removal in order to prevent a failure? If so, is that also true for a piston? I know we're not going to melt gas tubes and bend barrels with a semi-auto but like an energized bunny a SA can just keep on going & going as long as ammo & finger muscle remain.
-
Correction...a finished but still stripped lower, not a complete lower.
-
Got some feelers out for a high-profile pattern set of receivers out there. Not easy to find 'ready to buy'. Saw some 80% lowers that look like they need some more machining but I'd rather go the FFL shipping route for a complete lower haha

Since free-floating improves consistency and can lead to improved accuracy, doing it for the sake of accuracy is a valid goal ;)
-
Only kind I ever had was impinged & they work great with the proper length tube. And I don't know anything about harmonics. Seems like any kind of attachment point on a barrel, whether pistons, gas-blocks, sights, bipods, etc, could disturb the harmonics of the barrel? What do bad harmonics do anyway, make the barrel hum & vibrate like a tuning fork? lol
-
Isn't the purpose for FF'ing different for various uses? I need picatinny attachments out on the far end of the barrel. Others want no interference with the harmonics of the barrel (where a bolt-action is better than an AR even when impinged). I've seen some sweet pics of piston-guns sporting some mighty fine rail hardware.
-
Lucky for me, because I'm not that good anyway, I don't need to be gnat-shooting accurate. We just have a bad feral hog problem around here.
-
Thanks for the input, EngrBob. For the barrel I will probably be going with a 16" QPD with a mid-length gas tube, and the Faxon quality & prices are attractive. Still have tons of homework to do before ordering anything.
-
I should add that it's a tactical to medium range build, not a long range or match shooter.
-
A new 308 to be built from scratch. All I have so far is a hi-profile 12" Fortis Switch rail, so the build needs to be compatible with a DPMS hi-profile receiver. Also any thoughts on the Nitrided Stainless Steel barrels from Criterion? Haven't looked at Faxton yet but will. What parts would you put into the build? I don't need best of the best quality, just good quality; best bang for the buck is the goal.
-
Thanks for the input, jtallen. One opinion I heard (not that I have any knowledge it) is that impinged is a little better for tactical/combat use while pistons are better suited for match shooting but I have no doubt a great shooter could skin flies with either type. I think both are good systems and would use either one that's available.
-
Yes, sir. Never won a thing in a pissing match anyway

Might have been a bit late but it's still working. Brownell's currently offers two gauges for the 7.62x51; a Go and a Maximum. Toth has the Go, No Go and Field. Might Brownell's Maximum be the same as Toth's Field? Since DPMS said I should use the 7.62x51 gauges instead of the .308's, I plan to get the 7.62 Go, No Go & Field gauges.

I learned to measure twice and order once...lol Bought the wrong rail!

How's it doing now? I just ordered a 14" low-profile keymod SLR Solo (and their barrel nut wrench) for my 308 Oracle, after sending them an email asking for a code. Got one for $50 off!
