Update me on hearing protection please
buttonbuck replied to buttonbuck's topic in General Discussion
You guys are using the electronic ones? Am I just imagining it or is there a cumulative effect to doubling up with squishy's? -
I use squishys with a set of 24db over the ear and I'm not sure how cumulative it works out with actual numbers, but it certainly seems quieter than just OTA alone or squishys alone. That said I think it's time to update my old OTA's with a set that at least has a padded section on top that bugs the crap out of me. I tried some Howard Leight electronics and they are neat, but don't seal real well around the bottom of my ear w/o staying put. I have to wear coke bottle glasses and keeping a good cheek weld isn't easy b/t fidgeting with pressure on glasses and fat ear muffs! I am readying about severa pairs of over the ear that go over 30db in the 32-37 range. Anyone have anything they wanna suggest they like? Seems the big bulky ones just don't let me keep a good cheek weld and i take a ton of offhand shots this time of year in full hog mode(weeping rifle season just ended:( Thanks for updating me I think my current pair dates back to the Bill Clinton administration!

Never should have sold it what a dummy figured I'd not have a need for it. Need it for dad he is having so much fun he's blasting through ammo faster than Rosie O'Donnell on Bear Claws at a free Krispy Kreme event. 9-13", pivot model and if you have a pod lock great if not will source one on my own. Thanks all

Where do you live in FL? Welcome to the land of swamp hot!

I've never broken down the process to that level and I'm glad you did thanks. On scatter guns/handguns I'm probably a bit of a simpleton as I grew up learning to shoot on an antique Ithaca 12g side by side with no sights of any kind it was stone cold turkey/deer slayer. "Here son shoot this at that" kind of thing and I could do it. For some reason I just hit what I'm aiming at, but I also might be aiming at a more forgiving target. I practice with my edc off a draw stroke for cns or upper left quadrant hits on ipda steel with paint feedback, not unlike MPBR for my hunting. If I can put it in the vital zone I'm happy.

I ended looking on ebay real quick and voila found a home run really just a stroke of luck. 17" Danner Pronghorn blems new in box for 80 shipped.....they are 300 new. Best snake boot I've ever worn and as if I care they have water spots on them? They are going to be muddy and full of cow poop on day 1 so bring em! We have them everywhere both rattlers and pygmies. This time of year they love hanging around the pines and the bases of trees. I will get a pic up here of one my buddy nailed as he walked up to his climber a few weeks ago about a 5 footer. I know you guys have 'em much bigger and meaner in TX!

Wow I hadn't read that! I love my German stamped 226 I won't ever sell it I've had some insane offers for it. 10k rounds easy down the pipe never had a single issue all factory parts minus a couple of slide catch/trigger bar/recoil springs and a few proactive knick knacks. I've had a few friends with some issues on some of their recent handgun offerings, but nothing that wasn't resolved. I remember reading a rumor more than a story I think it came off a blog or web forum that NSWC was moving towards a Glock frame from the 226/229? Was that malarkey or the real dealy-o? This article made me think back on that. -
found a pair thanks!

I've been more than happy with the accuracy of my various handguns and shotguns right off the shelf, but I suppose if one is not happy with them then a laser bore sighter is necessary.
-
That's a great idea as I'm looking for every opportunity to stop crouching down at this age. Thanks for the tip!

Just for giggles I challenge anyone debating a bore sighter to try it country hick style if you haven't dropped coin yet. Take off the upper receiver and get it situated on a target(I put mine on the kitchen counter facing off the porch to the driveway and walked out to the end and put a piece of blue edging tape on a tree at maybe 40 yards). Take out the BCG and look down the barrel and line it up on your target then look through your scope an adjust as necessary to bring them into harmony. A bore sighter is more accurate than this for sure, but to a level where it matters once firing at your chosen zero distance I don't see any difference. I've never seen anyone dial a rifle scope in where they didn't do some fine tuning at their zero distance again. I was done rotating turrets after maybe 5-6 rounds on my last 'eye sighter' build a month ago. Let's say a well done precision take your time like your life depends on it bore sighter gets you to 1" high and 1" right and kitchen counter eye sighter gets you to 4" high and 4" right. What's the real world difference by the second shot? For 1/4 MOA clicks @ 100 the laser guy clicks 4x and the eye baller clicks 16x. After 2 shots they are likely on top of each other or under an inch at 100 yards.

I'd like to find a used scope compatible soft case for my 308AR. Doesn't need to be pretty just functional. Take a look at what I have here if anything raises your eyebrows feel free to let me know. YPOD shooting rest, LimbSaver recoil pad(for bolt action/shotgun stocks), USGI web belt with Bianchi M12 holster and a Rogers Super Stock. Thanks have a good day out there

I figured I may as well try even though this isn't a hard core hunting forum from what I can tell. Looking for a back up set to keep at the camp as old age or just being dumb has led me to forget my boots a few times recently. I like Danner a lot and currently have the 18" Pronghorns, but Irish Setter also fits me like a glove...their Vaprtrek line seems to be a winner. Need to be 17-18" and obviously snake proof/waterproof. Feel free to shoot me a picture and let me know what you want for them and maybe I can take an old pair off your hands....don't care how they look just that they are water tight and functionally good to go. Thanks

I have stuff as fresh as a year and other that is close to 20. I have shotshells, handgun and rifle ammo is older than the intErwEbs and it all shoots great. I have some in my truck gun that is probably 10 years old right now, bedside is stuff I picked up at a show last summer.
-
No I did not want to screw up that area for deer we are in the last week of rifle season. I have all summer to shoot cockroaches like that they're just a nuisance right now.
-
FYI anyone else looking to eradicate some cockroaches there are some monsters here in central and western FL. There was an 1,100 pounder of legend taken not 30 minutes from where you stayed back in 2004 they had to put it in a front loader. Certainly an abnormally large hog due to some special circumstances. http://www.snopes.com/photos/animals/bighog.asp If you go with a good hog outfit a 200 pounder will be on the low side they are literally everywhere. Especially this year the acorn drop was bizarre they drop like this on certain years someone explained to me the hows and whys can't recall exact reasons. They don't guarantee size usually at these hunting camps, but they take care of everything down to the processing. There are even some places who will set up up with a 15K thermal semi-auto for hight hunts! Don't be surprised to find a 3-4-500 pounders. I had an ~ 300 pounder charge the foot of my stand yesterday morning about 6 am when I was doe bleating in the dark he was ornery! He sloshed out of the swamp, crashed through palmettos and made a bee line for the ladder close to 100 yards just to chck it out. I green lighted him and he just stood there snorting for several minutes. Contrary to what many people believe feral hogs are omnivores they will eat anything they can get their disgusting face into

Good idea we are pretty much going to follow the same modus operandi for all 'dead meat'. We have a giant freezer to put them in plus whenever we smoke something we are going to either hang it just off the ground or tack it into the ground best we can to have somewhat of a 'frequent diner' locale for them. The volume of dead hogs on that property once deer season ends it's staggering we just need to make it easy for them to find in a routine acreage. Or at least that is what we are going to try we are still novices on coyotes have only shot at them when they appeared not targeted them specifically. Reading a ton. Thanks all.

Oh geez I didn't see this sorry. Can you clarify this is the latest offering for the 308 they offer? I was looking at the group buy link and I'm a little confused.....is there an old TacOps and then the new Sniper version? Thanks for the heads up.

What made you decide to move to the 308 AR/AR-10 Platform?
buttonbuck replied to imschur's topic in General Discussion
Oh I agree the 308 is the last thing I'd reach for in my home it stays tucked away used for hunting exclusively and soon to be some longer-ish range gong action. The only reason I dumped the 15's was b/c there is no scenario I will be taking game where I'd defer to it from my 308. The 12g scatter gun is my go to in the home -

I sold my last one not 3 weeks ago a vintage HBAR. It became clear there wasn't a time I was going to reach for a 5.56 again once I got hooked on the 308AR. Already loved the projectile, but adding semi-auto? Donezo.
