  1. Hey this sounds like a 'not to miss' deal to me, wife grinned like a Cheshire cat when she read the premise, going to be tight to get back to LA and catch our flight back across the Pacific but I think it's 'miss it and you'll regret it' Appreciate the invite 98Z5V
  2. Hey guys, Wife and I are coming over to your fine country 14th October through to 7th November, doing a road trip from...... Los Angeles - San Francisco - Sacramento - Salt Lake City - down through Utah to Cedar City - Las Vegas - basing ourselves in Vegas for a few days to see Hoover Dam, Death Valley and the Grand Canyon then catching a flight from Vegas to check out New York City, back to Vegas, then onto San Diego and back to LA Any suggestions on things to 'do not miss' that aren't on the usual 'tourist trail' in any of the area's I've mentioned would be appreciated. Can't tell you all how excited we both are about visiting the USA, counting down the days until we board our flight.
  3. Have you looked at the Lone Wolf 9mm AR's, they make complete uppers and lowers that take Glock mags. My wife has one, close to 2K rounds through it without a single issue, and SO MUCH fun.
  4. Thought I'd scratch your itch a little Sisco :-) FWIW if any of you guys are going to load for subsonic I can definitely recommend IMR Trail Boss, it's burns nice and clean but it's best quality is that it has a very high bulk density, like 10gr's nearly fills a 308 case, no chance of double charging or any of the other issues when using very small charges of other powders. I've been using it for a while to load both 308 subs and my wife has a suppressed .243 Win bolt action, it works very well in that too. A bit of info.......... http://www.imrpowder.com/PDF/Trail-Boss-data.pdf
  5. Sub sonic suppressed 308 is a lot of fun, some 175gr Sierra MK's over 10gr of IMR Trail boss out of my CZ550, chronograph average was 1011fps, turn the volume up, this thing is super quiet
  6. Went out to the range today, full intentions of doing things I wanted to do, wife came along as well packed her new toy with her, I got distracted, (not difficult), and spent the afternoon burning up 9mm with her instead of doing what I was supposed to, OH what a shame :-) what a neat afternoon, haven't grinned so much in ages. Lone Wolf G9 9mm, 10 1/2" barrel, DPT modular suppressor, (nz made unit that you can add or remove baffles to change length and/or noise suppression level) http://www.dpt.co.nz/
  7. Thanks guys, going to the range tomorrow to give it a whirl
  8. Hey guys, I know this is a 'non brand specific' section but I couldn’t figure were else to post this query. I just received my new Slash's XH 308 rifle length buffer along with the matched spring that they supply, it looks the goods, no doubt, but I was surprised to see that it is solid, IE no sliding weights in it, I'm sure some of you guys will be running these, is there any issue with bolt bounce running this buffer without the reciprocating weights? or is it in combo with the correct spring heavy enough to stop this happening. I'm not concerned about bolt bounce in FA as the rifle is and always will be semi, but I don't want the thing going into battery then trying to momentarily unlock every time it cycles. Cheers for any input :-)
  9. The barrel I have coming is an un-profiled, un-chambered blank, a complete blank canvas as such. So I'll be starting from scratch and after reading this thread I think I'll be starting somewhere around .075" to .080" and fine tuning from there, your 'secret port dia list' has been very helpful SS. Cheers
  10. Cheers, the deciding factors for me are velocity, ie making the most of the cartridge vs practicality, do I need that extra 40fps from that extra 2" of barrel. And of course it's got to look right as well, ie the ratio of hand guard length vs barrel length :-). Just looking at your build, 24" doesn't look out of proportion at all as like you say 2" of that are actually a brake. Probably a few more weeks before the barrel turns up so no hurry to decide. Cheers
  11. Cheers 98Z5V, some sound advice, thanks. I have a full set of number drills so yes will be starting well below .099 and working up. Will post up some pics as it goes together.
  12. Excellent and timely info, thanks guys. Am building a .243 upper for mine and have been scouring the net and scratching my head furiously trying to decide on an initial gas port dia for .243, still haven't decided on overall length, was going to go 22", then decided on 20", then decided I haven’t decided just yet, I guess you can always make it shorter easier than you can make it longer again. Have a 1:8 5R .237/.243 blank on order from Bartlein at the moment, just waiting on the export paperwork from your State Dept so I can get the damn thing shipped.
  13. Doing my bit to promote 308 AR's in the Southern hemisphere Thanks Shepp
  14. Yeah no the steering wheel is on the correct side ;-):-) Diesel Toyota Forerunner, 3 litre turbo, wife wrote it off about 3 weeks after that photo was taken, lost it on black ice and dropped it into a 12 foot deep culvert, (she was OK), to say I was disappointed is the understatement of the year but we replaced it with the same model just a couple of years younger. You can, but they are a a tough animal to process, especially the tail, so we normally just take the hind quarters and back straps.
  15. Don't think you guys have these critters, Red Necked Wallaby, smaller cousin to the Australian Kangaroo, and damn good eating.
  16. One of the motivating reasons for buying these was simply that I didn't have to modify any of either my or my wifes AR's to fit one up, all our AR's, bar one, have A2 flash hiders so two suppressors, his 'n' hers, fit five different rifles without any mods to any of the rifles or proprietary/expensive muzzle devices or bare threads. I think it's a good idea, I'd guess that there are manufacturers in the US that will be doing something similar???.
  17. The flat piece/slide at the very end of the unit slides about half way out of the unit, then you slip the unit over your flash hider, the 'slide' slides back down and locates over the spanner flats on the flash hider, then you rotate the body of the unit, which is threaded to the attachment section, and it locks and centralises the whole thing up onto the flash hider, self aligns the bore of the suppressor to the bore of the barrel, (assuming your flash hider is true, I guess you would find out after the first round if it wasn't) . To remove is just the opposite, release the little ratchet type lock tab, unscrew the body about 3 turns and lift the 'slide' up. I hope my vague description makes sense :-), but in reality it is very simple, very secure and once you have done it a couple of times it is very fast.
  18. It depends, I can go to any local gun shop and buy a NZ made suppressor for anything from $50-$100 for a 22LR to $400-$1000ish for a centre fire calibre, then there are the imported units like Ase Utra that go around $400-$700 depending on model to the B&T ones that are close to $1500, so a very broad range of prices. The two B&T units I have I imported privately and they cost me, from memory, close to $1400 each, ($980 US). I wouldn't be surprised that if you guys have the law change you are all hoping for that the prices will probably go up for for a period as fresh demand drives them but I would imagine once the dust settles the prices will probably drop due to lots of new manufacturers and competition. Like I said, $50 for a 22LR suppressor, it just makes sense to have one on every 22 in the house.
  19. Hey guys, not sure if you 'can', (ha ha pun intended), source B&T suppressors in the USA so I thought I'd share a couple of mine. B&T Vortex Compact-V QD fit onto a STD A2 flash hider They work surprisingly well considering they are fairly compact, bottom pic is one on my 10.5" carbine, very fun rifle to shoot
  20. Interesting, I was contemplating getting a 308 Redding FL bushing die, I use one for loading 6mm Remington. My FL die for 308 is just a cheap LEE die, the photo of the case in my gauge after FL sizing only would actually go in a bit further if pushed but certainly won't go drop in flush like it will after SB sizing. @Survivalshop, so you are saying you don't need to SB size if you are using a Redding FL bushing die?, before I rush out and buy one :-). Cheers
  21. I small base size all my 308, sure the case life may be shortened but the added reliability and not having to deal with failures to go into battery out weigh the possibly shortened lifespan. I use a RCBS SB die and made a drop gauge from the off cut of the barrel blank that I used to barrel my 308AR, cut the 'chamber' in the drop gauge with the same chamber reamer I used to chamber the barrel so I can be sure if the round fits the gauge it is going to fit the chamber. Full length sized Small base sized
  22. Cheers, Hi planeflyer21, I'm familiar with the forum you linked, have visited there often, I should just make what I want rather than just buying it, time being the one resource I lack thanks to work and life’s general commitments :-) I have a pretty well equipped workshop in my basement, including a small 4 axis CNC mill. Here's a short vid I made a few years ago of my mill making a brake, first thing I made on it after converting it from a manual mill.
  23. ETA, these type of sights are what I'm talking about.... Cheers
  24. Hey guys, a question for you all if I may. I'm thinking of building an 'open sighted' upper for my 308 AR, something along the lines of a NRA High Power type rifle, with aperture sights. I'm not wanting to get into NRA High Power competition, but am more looking for a new shooting challenge that doesn't employ optics, IE a scope. Trying to source the correct ones, (that are designed to fit an AR type platform) seems like a minefield. Also trying to find a dealer that can export them seems just as difficult. Any info, or advice as to manufacturers and dealers, would be greatly appreciated. Also have any of you fella's been down this track? Cheers
  25. Thanks for the warm welcomes, gives me the fuzzies :-) I hope I can contribute on here, lots of good info in the threads I've been cruising. Thanks, yep, unlike our nearest neighbours, Australia, we have pretty good firearms laws and can own and use most anything. Although there are always those that want to take it all away, politicians, the police and all the damn hippies, but we are holding our own at present.
