Good to know. I'll start looking for a replacement.

Gettin' antsy for spring and warmer weather.... load experimentation
BrianK replied to BrianK's topic in 300 AAC Blackout
No not really. The difference is the size of the piston that the pressure pushes on and the lightweight bullet as payload. It's totally different than 5.56. Load data gets thrown out the window*. I might need to use scary fast powder and as I get older I get less adventurous. FWIW, I never blew up anything because I always made small moves and I will this time too. Maybe .220Swift or .22/250 would be more like what I was getting from the .308 handgun, but That would require another rifle. I'm also not going to look and see what the load data is for those cartridges. Maybe they use similar powder charges, but I doubt it. They don't need it because they don't use an oversize piston. It's probably not going to give me what I want though due to the low volume of the 300BLK case. It's certainly not going to be as dramatic as what I got with .308 Win. I would expect it to give me higher velocity than I would get from the same short barrel if it was chambered for 5.56. But there's only one way to find out. As for as the can... Not all cans are built the same. Should the sabot get caught in my can it's just a matter of unscrewing the can from the barrel (or just use long rod through the upper) and push it out. Think of the innards as a sort of smoothbore barrel extension. It's less about quiet and more about being short and containing the blast which it does very well (Amtac CQB). *I'm not going to check my actual load data, so no one should think that what follows is something to be copied. With .308 I remember a full charge (40+ grains) of 1680. The load data that came with the sabots used powder that would have been used with, for example, a 150 grain .30 bullet. I tried their load but knew before busting a primer that it was all wrong; safe, but wrong. If I hadn't run out of room for powder in the case I could have gotten even higher velocity. Or I could have gone to an even faster powder, but my next fastest powder was IMO too big a jump so I stopped where I was. Maybe today I could make that jump, but that experiment was shelved. I didn't expect better accuracy if I got higher velocity. But I want to see what a 10" barrel in 300BLK will give me. That's the reason for doing it. Not to duplicate what a 5.56 will do. Right now my fast load is a Maker 85 @2300 fps. I know I can do better than that with a bigger piston, lighter bullet, and MUCH faster powder. If it feeds, and that's a big if, will it even cycle the action? Will there be enough gas at the pistol length gas port for function? I suspect yes, but I don't know that due to the greatly reduced powder volume. -
There was a time that I played around with .308s and sabots and .22 bullets and got 3500 or was it 3600(?) fps out of a 15" handgun. Mediocre accuracy at 100 yards had me call a halt to the experiment when the mfgr told me that was about the best I could expect. Fast forward 20+ years to today. I'm getting the bug to try the sabots in the 300BLK with a homogenous copper solid .22. Will it feed reliably? What will I get for velocity and accuracy? The sabots won't get stuck in my can due to the nature of the way it's built but that should be interesting also. It'd be nice if the sabot would get shed outside the can and not inside. FWIW, my original .308 testing found me not using the load data that came with the sabots. It was just ridiculous data. The powder was too slow and what came out of the barrel looked like a candle flame. I wound up moving up the burn rate chart to powder more in line with a .22 centerfire, and lots of it. Blast was a sharp smack to the chest sorta like the hit from the blast from a .50BMG, just not as much. I would expect reliable function (enough gas) in the 300BLK AR as long as the sabotted bullet feeds reliably. I feel the need to try this.

Whoops! Disregard what I wrote above. I have the Sylvan Arms folder and not the Law Tac'. Mind fart on full display.

It has a foam sleeve on it for cheeking, and also a single point sling to push it out against pressure. I think I'm good but who knows? I'm not doing any more to satisfy a vague law that's going to get thrown out. First they're good, then they're not. That's definitely entrapment. Let's see, 10M - 40M in the hands of users, I'd call that in common use. Vague "law" by unelected people who have already been told they can't make law. I think I'm good. Thanks for kicking it around gents! -

Or maybe I didn't make it BARF safe? I was just on another forum and if it has a buffer tube that can be shouldered it's still a SBR? How does one make a AR handgun w/o a buffer tube? Yes, I know about ARs that are built differently but the vast majority use buffer tubes. -

OK, so I made my last arm braced handgun legal in ATFs eyes. The big difference from a use standpoint? Before it stood up nicely in its ready position. Now it needs to be propped up so that it doesn't fall over. I'll make a stand for it. It's actually smaller and no less useable as an unbraced handgun so where is the logic? fjb; eff the BARF. The word I have from the local manufacturer and I don't remember how they came by it, is that a majority of agents wants to see SBRs taken out of the registry. That's a step in the right direction. Removing cans from the registry should also be done. We'll have to fight like hell for that. To get more is probably too much to ask for. -

Yup, that hurling will do! That's disgusting! Speaking of which... I was a paratrooper and a friend had this planned but I hadn't a clue. There was always lots of air traffic during a jump and the cargo planes we flew in, C130s mostly, had to execute some pretty drastic maneuvers at times. A flight that should have been 20 minutes had been known to last over an hour. Anyway, my buddy took a sick bag from a previous jump and stowed it away in his gear. He put a can of vegetable soup in it and had it on his person for the jump in question. Then he hauled it out and made like he was puking into it. After a good show he upended it and started eating it. I missed it because as per my usual I was sleeping on the plane. I heard about it after we got on the ground though. I guess it had the desired impact for those troopers watching. Heck, they talked about it later, and got some laughs so yes, it had the desired impact.

You guys who like to shoot .22 and might be bored

I just rebuilt the 10/22 Charger a few posts above. I had a Volquartsen carbon fiber barrel on order for over 7 months and got a fire under me to get the gun rebuilt. So I cancelled that barrel and ordered a TacSol alum/w steel liner barrel. That saved me an inch of barrel (9 vs 10") and over 7 ozs of weight at the muzzle. I had the TacSol barrel in a few days. Very soon after I ordered some titanium parts from Power Custom to lower the lock time and to give me a larger charge handle. That has all been installed and I have yet to function test it or even sight it in. But it feels good. The difference over stock is huge with the lighter barrel. 7 ozs might not sound like much, but in a SBR it's huge. It would have felt much the same with the Vol' barrel since it weighed (on paper) 1/2 oz heavier than the OEM barrel. I'm soooo glad I made the change to TacSol. Now waiting on warmer weather to sight it in and test it. -
😆 Yeah, I thought that was just too funny not to share. And those people are in charge? No wonder they think killing 90-95% of the worlds population is a good thing. They're all nuts. Where do they find such garbage? FWIW, I looked for a puking emoticon but all I could find was a green nauseous face and that didn't quite work.

Exactly MikedaddyH! I expect the rule to be thrown out. But if not I'll pay the $200 and not be subject to the 120 day excrement. I'm working on converting my arm braced handguns to pure handguns and after I have the stamps in hand rebuild them. One is already converted, I need minor parts for the other. -
I'm not going to check it now, but if I remember correctly the hinge part also has a retention detent that protrudes when the hinge is swung open preventing the BCG extension from coming out. It's fairly bulletproof. Just don't push the actuator button when it's swung open 'cause that's how the extension comes out for disassembly.

I didn't know about the 88 days. But what I did get from the new rule was that it has to be registered in 120 days. Now maybe I'm misunderstanding that, or maybe it isn't being reported accurately, but if I submit a form I expect to be waiting for at least 6 months and probably much longer before I see my tax stamp. last I checked 120 days was approx' 4 months, so at the very best I'll miss the 120 days by 2 months. -
I have one on mine and it works fine with both supersonic and subsonic loads. Like you JMJ I had concerns about function with the added weight but my concerns turned out to be unfounded. It still makes no sense to me that it didn't cause problems. Shooterrex, Yeah, I could see where if someone doesn't build their AR correctly and does the floating buttstock hold where it could be an issue.

I hope Gaetz's bill gains traction, but mentally slow joe will never sign it. Maybe just not giving ATF any $ in budget would do it? But I admit that I know nothing about the budget process. FWIW, I am trying to e-file for my arm braces to SBR them and it's a very bloody abortion of a process. I have no idea how BARF could have made it more difficult, but with very little effort they could have made it exceedingly easy. But clearly that wasn't the point of e-file or it would have been easier to accomplish. fjb and f BARF. -

I know you don't have the answer, and it's really rhetorical, How can they be so stupid? Maybe they just listened to bubba and spent no time on the rule? Heck, the barf (intentionally misspelled) even gave pictures to illustrate. I know there were 9mm ARs in the pix. 98Z'- I'd like to see the barf people involved in this all receive charges, but I know that'll never happen. It continues to happen because there are never any consequences. So they continue to pile onto the swill trough and use our $ against us. Evil SOBs! -
What do you have on order or in the mail? Part 2
BrianK replied to imschur's topic in General Discussion
I ordered the wrong parts from Power Custom, so they have been returned. More Power Custom trigger parts on order. Randall at PC tells me they are the correct parts this time. That will complete that SBR build 3(?) years after beginning it. Yeah, I'm almost never in a rush when it comes to "perfecting" my firearms. I still need to sight it in. Things on order... well sorta. I'm working on 2 (or more*) efile SBR tax stamps for arm braced handguns. Trying to get fingerprinted today. It would be nice if I can get digital file prints so that I don't need to go through this every time I want an NFA item. I digitized my mug the other day so that I no longer need to get passport pix taken. *I haven't decided yet if I'm going to buy a few more lowers and register them to save the $200 tax. -

So as usual congress screwed it up 80 years ago and the people pay the price. The barf (Intentionally mispelled), rumored to be the low scorers on the civil servants test, don't question what they're doing, they just try to maintain their power. -
Which one? Left or right? I hope female but one never knows today.

Why not use a regular base sizing die?

Yeah, I figured it was a case of mistaken identity. That's the problem with local names, they can be very confusing. And who of us are going to use the species names that can't be confused? Nobody.
