Yes, this ^^^^ . Of course a laboratory type can be purchased, I don't remember the name, but they were among the first SV "machines". But they are quite expensive, large, and just not needed anymore. If I was SVing for a hospital or large facility that's what I'd have, and a dedicated space for it, just like the space for the oven and other cooking appliances. But again, they are pretty much a thing of the past and not needed for home use. We don't have a lot of space and the machine just doesn't take up much of what we do have. When I SV lots of meat*, I use a small "cooler" as the vessel. One whose top I modified to allow the SV machine to get into the water. Otherwise it's a largish poly food storage container (from a restaurant supply store) or a pot. *I've been known to buy lots of a cut when it goes on sale and SVing 30+ of them at a time (in the cooler) isn't unusual for me. The first cook takes the most time in the bath since to do SV correctly the items have a warming time where they are warmed through (they soak up the heat), then a cooking time, and a pasteurization time. After that's been done it all gets chilled as rapidly as I can manage, then frozen. To use we take out as many individual portions as we need, warm them at the same temp' they were cooked at, and in an hour or so they're ready to be finished off by whatever method is appropriate. But whichever it is, first cook or warmup, while it's doing it's thing I'm doing my thing. The only time we come together is in putting the items in the bag and then the bath, then finishing them off. And the results are spectacular when done correctly. I've had people who don't eat meat try a piece, finish off the portion, and come back for more. The incorrect way is the way my brother did it. He SVed some steaks BEFORE he had a means to finish them off. I guess he didn't know a super hot fry pan could be used. Not to cook them, just to brown them. Anyway, he served the pale steaks with no Maillard reaction flavor and his wife told him never again. Another way is to do as I've read some restaurants do it with a far too short a time for the first cook. For food safety the times really shouldn't be shortened. If adding up the times for the 3 stages comes to 6 hours minimum time at XXX degrees then that's what it takes. For example, the filets and NY strips that I did above figured out to 6 hours at 129 degrees. But we ate them after 8 hours. That was all to the good. But 4 hours would have been flirting with risky food.

Too late now. It's mostly all gone. Some rolls and c'flower potato salad are leftovers. I cooked 6 steaks, 2 NY strips and 4 Filet Mignons. The ladies had filets and loved them. I had a strip and it was also very good. Whoops(!), 2 filets and 1 Strip are still in the bags in the refrigerator. Yeah, I'm terrible about taking pix when people are waiting for food and conversation is going on.

We're having a friend over to an early supper tonight so some steaks were put in the 129 degree sous vide bath at 0800. After they come out of the hot tub I finish them off with some dextrose and a torch. That produces the Maillard reaction that gives grilled meat that great flavor. Plus, it's a guy thing. Who doesn't like using fire? Our friend will bring homemade yeast rolls (I can eat 1/2 of one, I'm on a very low carb diet) and the veg' will be cauliflower "potato" salad. To find out what Sous Vide is it's best to just do a 'net search. It can turn someone who doesn't cook into a gourmet chef. Really. It's super easy. Tonights steaks? they're probably ready now (1430), but we won't eat until 1700-1800. They won't overcook and they will be a perfect med' rare from edge to edge, no grey meat.

What do you have on order or in the mail? Part 2
BrianK replied to imschur's topic in General Discussion
Oh, and one of these also arrived. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07Q3VST3Y?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title&th=1 What does that have to do with shooting? The range I belong to has the 25 and 50 yard berms down low. My bipod only depresses just so much. My rear bag needs to be elevated and I think the adjustable elevation will work best. I guess I'll find out. -

Yesterday an HK 3 lug adapter arrived for my .32/20 Contender barrel. Why? I want to load some light bullets sub-sonic* and don't want to fiddle with changing the end cap on the can. I thought I'd have a problem finding an adapter to fit the 5/8 24 (I think that's the thread) on the barrel, but no, they are easily found. Still waiting on the B&T parts that I ordered on 8/23. Supposedly they shipped a "partial " order today. If they had contacted me to tell me they were waiting for all the parts that would have been OK. But silence on their part prompts an inquiry; common sense, which is not all that common today. Whatever. * Sure I can load light subsonics in the .300BLK AR-15 but I don't know if they'll feed even if I manually operate the charge handle. So phooey on that, just load light subs in the single shot and bullet shape means nothing. -
I suggest to folks who build HD firearms to have different colored micro red dot sights (MRDS) and lasers if they have both (best IMO). If the MRDS sight is set up correctly once the firearm is brought to the weld one will be looking through it. I suggest red for that since the eye won't need to search for it. The laser should be green. Why? If it's a different color the laser can be set to the sight and easily checked once zeroed. If it too is red which is which? Good luck! And yellow/green is where the human eye is most sensitive. So a green laser is immediately picked up "out there".

A pic rail end cap, pin, and hairpin clip for my B&T GHM9 SBR. The factory folding "wire" stock is a hair too long and I'm looking at one that will fit me better. On a small PCC I don't want a too long stock, I prefer too short rather than too long. I have one that fits me better but it's rigid and I want one that folds AND fits me better. Yeah, I know I'm asking a lot. The end cap was supposed to be delivered today but wasn't. The pin and hairpin clip have been on order for 9 days tomorrow and still haven't even entered the USPS system. B&T gets flunking grades for that! Maybe they're on vacation. In Summer? In Tampa? Maybe but not my top choice for time of year for vaca' in Tampa. But I don't live there. (obviously, otherwise I'd drive there and pick the minor parts up) -
Have fun with your new handgun. Just curious, do you plan on shooting supersonic loads or subsonics mostly? SS are easy for function, subsonics can be an issue. I have found just one commercial subsonic that functions in mine, but reloading makes subs pretty easy. I like .300BLK alot! And I like the looks of arm braced handguns or SBRs. They just look right. Add a can and they still look right. Someone mentioned flash? Maybe little to none. The cartridge is designed for fast powder that burns completely in a 9" barrel (from memory and I have CRS) and not huge amounts of it, so flash may be low, esp' with subs. I'm very interested in reading your after range action report.

I think I can do better but things just keep getting in the way of trigger time. I made (IMO) necessary changes now I just need to try them. One thing I can't change is the old guy behind the trigger. I also need to zero a T/C Contender .22 barrel that I had threaded, work up a subsonic load for a .32/20 T/C barrel, and cast a mess of 220 grain .308 bullets for the .32/20 and .300 BLK. But I also made changes in 2 other rifles. The KIDD SG got a new KIDD DLC bolt, and the Ruger Charger Takedown SBR also got one. Why? They wear cans, but if they didn't .22 rimfire is reason enough. Rimfire is filthy and DLC just wipes clean. It's also inherently slick. I expect no issues but I still need to check for reliability. Yeah, I know pix or it didn't happen. The .22 rimfire wears a HK 3 lug adapter. The .32/20 is below. I'll probably get another 3 lug adapter for the .32/20. Both barrels use the same Dead Air Ghost that handles rimfire on up to .45. As long as it's a handgun cartridge or subsonic it handles it. Lotsa pressure is a no-no for the Ghost.. Sorry, the DLC bolts are installed and just look blackish, nothing to see here! But I did a review of the bolts over on RFC. https://www.rimfirecentral.com/threads/the-kidd-dlc-bolt-a-review.1307691/?post_id=13462612#post-13462612

OK so I didn't check the temp' today but I'd be surprised if it went above 75. We had some humidity and it looked like it was going to rain any second but other than extremely light rain in the early morning, nothing. But we've had lots of rain this year. Those with wells that go dry, I doubt that they're having problems this year. Tomorrow rai is forecast, then for the week temps not going over 75, lower humidity, and sun. Hopefully low or no wind. I need to get to the range.

Pistol Brace Update, from 7 Jun 21
BrianK replied to 98Z5V's topic in Firearm Industry News and Gossip
That's a decision of beauty! (if such a thing exists) But particularly because we are dealing with the scumbags at ATF I no longer have any arm braced handguns*. Why? Because they love to pick on folks who don't have deep pockets to defend themselves. That would be me. Yet ATF does have deep pockets paid for by our taxes. That needs to change. The rules need to change so that when an agency is found guilty the people in the agency involved have to pay damages out of their pockets and not out of agency funds aka as taxes. Also reimburse ALL the funds used for the illegal actions. If a president can be charged for actions he did while in office that goes with that thinking that agencies can be also**. Oh, and Joe, and Hillary, that goes for your criminal enterprises too. * I now cheek them and that's almost as good. Just look it up on youtube. It can't be done with all handguns but the ones it can be done with, yeah, it works fine, easily out to 50 yards. ** I don't believe that but I use the lefts logic. -

I ordered a new DLC bolt for my KIDD SG. The blurb about the new bolts stated they'd be shipped in October. But I got a heads up that mine was shipping a few days ago. I disregarded it thinking it was an automated message and the computer somehow screwed up. But no, it's arriving today. Why DLC? I've been using a DLC bolt in a suppressed .300BLK in the hope that it would be easier to clean. Yup, just wipe it clean. Some folks also run them dry. I don't. The KIDD is a rimfire and rimfire burns filthy. Add a can and that makes it even worse. DLC should pay off bigtime in it. The lube I have planned is Hornady one shot and the combo should work great together. Right now I have a plain ol' KIDD bolt in it with One Shot and I just use compressed air to clean it. Also being delivered are 2 bricks of SK Standard plus ammo. -
OK, not centerfire so maybe different factors causing cold bore shift. With rimfire I have seen cold bore fliers at 50 yards, maybe .2 mils. Then the rest go where they're supposed to go. But the term "cold bore" is a myth with rimfire IMO. It has absolutely nothing to do with the temp' of the bore or rimfire wouldn't settle down after one shot. There's maybe 3 grains of powder in a LR cartridge and with SV (subsonic) ammo the bullets are lubed lead so very little friction for barrel heat. But the term is cold bore. But the fact of cold bore does exist, at least I've seen it. I think the videos below may suggest an answer as to what it is. It also suggests a solution and darned if it didn't work! But is it the same for copper jacketed lead? IDK! So since watching those videos I checked SK ammo, the best that I currently use in my KIDD SG, and yes, first round velocity spike exists. Using the straw gets rid of that. It also gets rid of the POI shift if I'm not so lazy as to just shoot a round and forget the straw. Yeah. most of the time I just fire a round to put moisture in the bore. IMO interesting stuff. Rimfire long range is "condensed" long range. What we do at 300 yards = somewhat what a .308 does at 1000. I'm not saying that I have shot at 300 yards yet but working toward it. Wind... I never had to contend with that in the forest of Maine where shots are short and speed is king (accuracy too of course). Thank goodness for the Army's "quick kill" training in '70. I actually had to slow down for hunting (wingshooting) or all I had was a cloud of feathers. Good training. Deer hunting? No problem, one shot with the .308 and I had venison every time. But long range? Very different.

Thanks. I never would have thought KY saw those temps. Are most Kentuckyans ready for that with winterized cars and such? Sorry for the curiosity but I'm amazed at those temps in a place I never expected them. I'm in Maine and we know to expect it. I actually prefer our dry -20 than 85 with humidity.
-
That's the pits about the genny. When we lose our power for an extended time we always seem to lose a few because they decided to run their portable generator inside. They'd get Darwin awards except they're generally old, have already bred and are out of breeding age. Do you see -15 in KY outside of a freezer? For us (Maine) more hot humid weather but the forecast is for a break in the weather for next week with lower humidity and temps in the 70s. Fingers crossed.

Anybody watching it? I admit that I had no plans to watch it. Then I saw the woke *rap during the opening indoctrination, while at the Dr's office, and decided I'd seen enough. I never even got to see the Last Supper travesty. I figured I didn't need to see males competing against females either, and I expected to see that. I wasn't disappointed. Today a biological male boxed against a female and she had enough just 40 some odd seconds in. What a bunch of bovine excrement! My wife told me that it was on the news that they stopped some swim meet due to turds in the Seine. Filthy city! I was there over 50 years ago and in all that time they never cleaned anything up??!!! There is no medal, no anything that could ever get me to swim in the Seine! The olympic committee has feces for brains and they're absolutely as insane as the male who claims he's female. Really? They can't recognize mental illness? Can't tell him to go pound sand? But oh, he has on his passport that he's female, that makes it OK. So I haven't watched it and other than hearing about the BS that makes it onto FOX news I won't watch any of it. I feel sorry for the athletes who showed up with the sincere belief that they'd actually be in an athletic competition and not a circus of insane wokeness. And for a swimmer to have to do the Passaic River crawl to get the turds out of the way, that's just too much. But the Seine will be clean tomorrow so they'll be able to swim. So my wife heard on the news. Does anyone actually believe that?

Hot, humid, with lotsa rain. We've been staying in the A/C or trying to. From the A/C at home into the A/C in the car. Out of the car and into the A/C in the store or wherever. I have gone to the range 3x in this heat but I'm ready to pack it up in 2 hours and, you guessed it, get back into the A/C.

Yesterday I went to the range after putting the 5-25x scope on the KIDD. I'm considering using the Supergrade design to build a SBR since the required barrel change can happen in seconds. But to have a viable conversion SBR it needs to have optics that can return to zero. That needs to be tested. At 50 yards I was within .2 mil/rads of zero. I dialed in the correction and as it turned out I probably should have waited. I'm pretty sure in under 20 rounds I was back where I started. Oh well! While I was there and set up I shot a few 10 round groups. Before I left I wanted to shoot my first rimfire shots at 100 yards. Problems... I've run into this before, my scope is bright and on a bright day it's too bright. Yesterday was very bright. I need to find a way to stop down the objective aperture. Working on that. The target I use at 50 yards has a 1/2" bold ring that fits really nicely in the stadia of my reticle. But the same target doesn't work as well at 100 yards. Coupled with the brightness in the scope I was lining up the stadia with other parts of the target. I printed out some better targets with a solid 1" dot. My ballistic app told me to dial in 1.5 m/r of comeups and that worked out. I adjusted the scope to move the group to the left a bit after getting the target in hand. Below is the best I could do. Anyway, 10 rounds at 100 yards with .22 LR. Centerfire is much easier IMO. But that's the game. measurements: Including the flier It's 2" outside to outside. Without the flier its 1 1/4". I think I can do better. Wind wasn't a factor as they were very light and that range is quite wind resistant if there is wind. . It would have been nice if we had a bit of air movement since it was hot and humid. After 2 hours I had enough of the heat and was ready to pack up and leave. The range (link below) is public built with $3,000,000 of Pittman-Robertson tax money. While overseen by the D of F&W it's run by volunteer ROs. Off season it's unusual for me to share the range with anyone and the ROs and I have time to talk. But we're starting to get closer to hunting season and there were people there to keep the ROs busy. Despite that the one RO I see there often called over another RO. "Hey, come over here and try this trigger!. He did and I talked him through it since it's a very light (8 oz/8 oz) 2 stage trigger. It never fails to get grins when the hammer falls and this time was no exception. I suggested he take a few shots but he declined saying that he didn't want to buy another rifle. https://www.maine.gov/ifw/programs-resources/recreational-opportunities/maine-shooting-ranges/summerhaven.html

Pix... For what they're worth. The T-Bolt has been sold 'cause I couldn't get it to eject without an unacceptable # of malfunctions. The SBR is still in the safe because it's my steel challenge rifle. But here they are as they were tested for PRS. They are no longer being considered for PRS. Instead I bought a new rifle that's more suited to the game. At this link:

Thanks. I really didn't want to but I played musical scopes with it and another rifle to get something I could use for 25 yard rimfire Appleseed. The KIDD is just too heavy for me to handle today. 30 years ago I might have been able to use it for position shooting but not today. I have another 10/22 but it's set up for fast handling for steel challenge. It's an 8" SBR and has absolutely no holding quality. I practiced and yeah, it sucked. But I gave the problem more thought and all of a sudden I had a flash of dimness. One is too heavy, the other not heavy enough. So I put the scope that can go onto the SBR on the KIDD and took the 5-25 and put it on the SBR. That made the SBR >2# heavier and I added another 5 oz muzzle device for more weight. That change made both rifles more like what I wanted. I sighted them in today and with SK Standard Plus the KIDD was producing 1 hole groups of between 4-10 rounds, 25 yards is nothing for it. And the SBR also had acceptable groups. But it was extremely hot and humid today with no breeze so I cut the range session short. I'll dry fire indoors and figure out which one will go to the Appleseed with me. FWIW, the KIDD just looks like a squirrel rifle with the smaller scope but the SBR looks very strange with it's new scope. The 5-25 has much better glass and I miss it. But the KIDD is just "smoother" all 'round. In a short time the scopes will go back where they belong and all will be right in my shooting world once more.

Nice! I like PCCs. And for certain niche roles PCCs fit them very nicely. Story in a bit. I was waiting in my Drs waiting room today and he knows that I shoot competitively and that he can talk to me about firearms. So seeing me he sat next to me and told me that he was just at the LGS looking for a home defense gun. Then he proceeded to rattle off a bunch of handgun names, some of the models were compacts. IMO totally unsuited for a noob for what he wants it for*. When it was my turn to talk I suggested that instead of a handgun which requires lots of practice, to instead get a PCC. He immediately saw the sense in that and realized on his own that it simplifies aiming. I'm willing to help any decent person and give of my time and suggested that we first shoot some of mine so that he can get experience, and then go to the LGS to see what they have. I don't know how deep he wants to go into the rabbit hole. We'll see. I have some stuff that's ideal for the purpose but again, I don't know how deep he wants to go into the rabbit hole. * Why do gun shops show people guns that they are unlikely to ever use effectively? I just don't understand that and this gun shop should know better. They suggested a Hellcat to him. I happen to like the Hellcat but he's not me. He's someone who wants something he can use for home defense and is unlikely to practice enough with a compact or ANY handgun to be proficient with it. A full size handgun is difficult enough. Oh well. I'll straighten him out and get him something he AND his wife can both use or even have 2 of, one for each. OK story time. But not so much about the PSA PCC, just PCCs in general. 6 years ago a few miles away a cop was executed with his own handgun. The cop killer drove a few miles down the road and into my very rural AO, thousands of densely forested acres. We woke to the sound of choppers and fixed wing aircraft overhead. An armored vehicle was in my neighbors driveway, soon to be in ours. A K9 unit was in the back 40 and my curtilage. Making the story short, the cop killer had been <30 yards from our heads as we slept. We spent 2 days with heavy LE presence and a total of 4 days with slung long arms when doing chores or visiting neighbors until he was found. Slung long guns got old REAL fast. Back then the best I could do was a bullpup but even that was better than a 16" MSR. I saw the light regarding PCCs and specifically PCCs with a SBR configuration. It'll probably never happen again, but if a zombie horde ever comes this way I can do chores w/o my rifle banging into everything and take care of the brain eaters out to the limits of where I can see them and where they can walk. As soon as USPSA had a PCC division I was all over it. Yeah, PCCs are fun! And a valuable tool for the right use.

What is seen on a KIDD is just part of it. It took alot for me to drop the hammer on one. But I wasted all of last year trying to get the T-Bolt to do something it just wasn't designed to do. I loved the T-Bolt but it just couldn't do what I wanted it to do, but what it did for 50 years? No complaints. I never missed with it. Seriously. The parts inside the KIDD that no one but the owner ever sees are just immaculate. Scuttlebutt has it that Tony Kidd stated that he couldn't beat Ruger on cost, but he could beat them on quality. That's what they sell. I wasted a year with the T-Bolt, the KIDD was right there from day one. Again, not a slam against the T-Bolt. If my safe was bigger I never would have sold it. That rifle and I were "mated". The KIDD trigger? If a trigger can be perfect this one is. When the barreled action came in I talked the folks at the LGS through it to feel it, but without it mounted they just couldn't know. After I assembled things I brought it back and talked them through it. Without that discussion it just feels like a single stage trigger. But talking them through it and having them take their time their eyes lit up. Then at the sorta semi indoor range if it isn't busy I let the ROs shoot it. One was a Long range shooter and he was the first to take me up on it. Again, I talked him through the trigger and again, eyes lit up. It wasn't set up for him but he produced a decent 10 shot group. Next time I went back one of the same ROs was there and I offered again. One accepted and told me that he had to try it because the other RO talked about nothing else the rest of the day. He got behind the rifle and I started to talk him through the trigger and I heard it click. "That's why I need to talk you through the trigger. Don't touch it until you're in position and ready to dry fire it.", I told him. Yeah, he got it too. The trigger is just superb. No other words for it. Don't like a 2 stage? Just forget it's there and treat it like a single stage, you'll never feel it. But want more? Feel for the wall and then think about the rifle firing and it does. That's the best I can describe it. The sorta no wind, sorta semi indoor range... At one time it was a sand pit. Landowner noise complaints were what spurred this range to contain the sound for them. It's where I test ammo. https://www.maine.gov/ifw/programs-resources/recreational-opportunities/maine-shooting-ranges/summerhaven.html

Let's try the pics again. OK, that's better!

I've been wanting to try a new shooting sport, long range shooting. There are 600 yard ranges sorta near by but they can't be used unless a competition is happening. Just a guess, basically they want enough people to run it safely. But those same ranges are OK w/o a match being run out to 300 yards. That's not really what I had in mind for long range. What to do? .22 rimfire is my solution. Those same 300 yard ranges and .22 rimfire make for a condensed "long range". I had a rifle that I was planning to use. I bought a Browning T-Bolt in '72 at the Weisbaden West Germany (at the time) AFB Rod & Gun club and I thought it would be accurate enough for the task. My testing confirmed that even though it was a fairly light sporter. But my testing required me to convert the 3/8" tip off dovetail to a rail and while accurate enough that induced ejection issues that I couldn't solve. So I sold the rifle to someone who wanted it and I know will take care of it. Since that sale I saw a solution that would have worked, but the deed was done and the rifle was no longer mine. In truth the required accessories turned that rifle from a svelte sporter into something more like a lumbering earth mover. But I needed to replace the T-Bolt with something. The T-Bolt is a straight pull bolt action. That was important later in life for me because I had sustained severe wrist damage. It healed but sustained use of the wrist does result in discomfort. My Drs call it trauma arthritis. Straight pull for me is a good thing. I looked at Anschutz but the entry fee for their straight pull rifles was far more than I had to spend. I looked at the Summit but also read reviews and listened to owners. I didn't think it would be accurate enough and I read too many reports of issues with them. That left semi-autos that are straight pull once and shoot a bunch before pulling the bolt back again. I bought a KIGG SuperGrade with a 20" bull barrel and a 2 stage 8/8 trigger. To save tax $ on the purchase I ordered the chassis in one order and the second order was for the barreled action. The chassis arrived, then I waited for the rest. The resulting rifle on the day that I bolted it together. I had the scope, I had been using it on the T-Bolt. It's a Brownells 5-25 x56 MPO that I got on clearance for $300 off (now discontinued). Quite a bit of what's seen as "scope" is just sunshade. I keep it on the scope 'cause I have no good place to store it. It's on a base with 20 moa of comeups and another 20 moa of comeups in the KIDD rail, 40 total. The bipod I had for a few years, an Atlas 5-H. The entire rifle as it sits there weighs 12.2#. The buttstock is a Luth-AR. So far I've only shot it out to 50 yards and it's definitely accurate. I'm still on the search for the right ammo. Predictably, but I had to test it anyway, cheap ammo isn't what gives the best results. Mehhh ammo gives mehhh accuracy. Right now I'm shooting SK Long Range and Match Rifle and getting the best results. But $.60/rnd ammo is not in my budget so I'll stick with SK and just lot test before buying more. Can't do that until more of it hits our shores though. Probably the most inaccurate part of the rifle system is the old guy behind the trigger. I also need to find a way to stop down the objective lens 'cause on bright days there's just too much light for me. Tested, a random brick of SK Rifle Match and Long Range. If one wants to shoot groups for braggin' rights one shoots 3-5 round groups. Then I found out that a better way to test ammo and the rifle system was 30-35 round groups. Note that I always, when shooting groups dial in some hold off so that I can keep my aimpoint intact. 30 round groups are far below. When I lot test I expect (fingers crossed) that the flyers not caused by me disappear; aka groups will shrink. Dang it! In my time away I forgot that I never did learn how to post pics on this forum!
