  1. Straight from dpms Ammunition Warning After extensive testing, we have found that only ammunition manufactured to SAAMI (Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers Institute) specifications is reliable in DPMS rifles. DPMS recommends the use of high quality, domestically produced ammunition for best results and highest accuracy. For plinking and practice, we recommend only domestic, commercially manufactured ammunition. Please note: the use of hand-loaded ammunition voids the factory warranty. The use of all ammunition listed below also voids the warranty. We have incurred feeding problems with the following: * Israeli ammunition * Korean ammunition * Chilean ammunition * Portugese ammunition We have reviewed several reports, from several manufacturers', regarding problems using this ammunition. The problem appears to be the bullet contour and the overall length of the cartridge, which is contacting the rifling before firing. This is creating a gas port pressure and chamber pressure higher than recommended, therefore causing feeding and extraction problems due to the increased bolt carrier velocity. In addition, there is accelerated fatigue on internal parts. There are also indications that brass may be out of spec, which could create an unsafe condition. * PMP * South African produced surplus We have used this ammunition in the past for testing purposes and found the brass is extremely soft and can "flow" into microscopic pores and grooves in the chamber creating "sticky" extraction. This has been reported in many types of rifles, but is more prevalent in semi-automatic weapons. * Lacquer Coated Ammunition or Steel-cased, lacquer coated ammunition * Wolf * Norinco * Silver Bear * Any steel-cased (coated or non-coated) ammunition The problem with this ammunition is that the lacquer coating on the case. As the barrel heats up, the lacquer turns to a soft, varnish substance and upon cool down, becomes very solid and difficult to remove. This effectively creates an undersized chamber and creates understandable problems. Your rifle is an investment and it only makes sense to choose quality ammunition for a quality rifle! Barrel Information To achieve the best results for accuracy you should clean the chamber and bore after every round for the first 25 rounds and then every 10 rounds up to the 100 rounds. It usually takes about 200 rounds per barrel for optimum accuracy. Please keep in mind that our barrels are production barrels not custom barrels. Accuracy is dependant upon many factors such as bullet weight, powder load, rifling twist, rifling lands, operator technique, etc. Our production barrels have achieved anywhere from 1/8" to 1
  2. When I last looked at home depot and lowes I seem to recall their threading tools were crappy. May have changed since then. I also do not recall if there was a 4-40. If you dont mind spending a little on shipping I would suggest mcmaster.com. There online catalog lets you drill down by common sense criteria. hand tap>spiral point (gun tap)>thread size>type of material to be tapped>coating> etc MSC (mscdirect.com) is similar just not as easy and they have branches everywhere. You can walk in to MSC branches. Both places deliver next day as a standard in most parts of the US WW Grainger is also an option that has branches everwhere. Lastly get the smallest bottle of tapping fluid you can purchase that is suitable for aluminum. Need to lube the tool
  3. Well they are a Brownells company and seem to have similar pricing. ;D I actually spent some time looking around after my original reply. I did not find another source.
  4. Just be certain to use a quality tap for the threads. A 4-40 tap is very easy to break and would be a bear to remove if that happened
  5. Dont like posting it cuz its borrowed from another forum but here it is.
  6. I haven't really looked at anywhere other then Sinclair. Is there something wrong Sinclair? Its not like they are Botach :D
  7. I haven't handled a MIAD in person. I surmised perhaps incorrectly that it did more then fill the gap. Some guys shortened the spring, threaded the hole and insert a very short set screw. I also believe others have done some reforming and hole relocation with epoxy. Alternatively filled the hole and created a shelf. I have pictures of the set screw mod somewhere but its pretty self explanatory. If you need to see it let me know.
  8. Yes there is an issue with fitting a MIAD to your DPMS. There's a few work arounds but Magpul offers a "wedge" accessory to fill the void. The Ergo grip have a similar issue. You can view their version of the wedge at the main site here
  9. Hi scuba steve, thanks for joining. Barrel Fluting: That's a bit of a controversial subject. Here's a great link on the subject Ring Height: Don't worry about it. The effect is negligible and the fact that's is more comfortable for you to shoot will improve your shooting. You may have noticed that there are risers for AR's. DPMS even sells AR-15's with extra high picatinny's. .308 vs 7.62: This thread covers it well.
  10. Looks good man

Change the upper and the mags to convert a 308 rifle to a 12 guage shotgun. Fidelisarms.com
  12. Welcome and thanks for joining Fastgnat. This site is still very new but folks are beginning to find their way. It sounds like you have one awesome lady.
  13. I took some pictures to illustrate the difference in the two buttstocks. Click the link here.
  14. I dont think so. Whats the typical cost and availability of FAL mags today? I bought 20 or 30 back in 1993 for dollars a piece. CMMG has recently started producing lowers for FAL mags as well as HK G3 mags
  15. BTW if you look closely you can see the difference in the Magpul PRS adjustable cheek rest in the two different versions.
  16. I thought it would be interesting to build an AR-15 with the same or similarly styled hardware to give a good reference for the difference in size and weight Both rifles have 24" bull barrels (AR-15 is Fluted), Magpul PRS buttstocks, Aluminum free float hand guards and Ergo pistol grips. Both rifles were weighed without bipods and optics and had an empty magazine installed. The difference was 5.5#. The AR-15 weighed in at 10.5# and the DPMS LR-308 tipped the scales at 16#
  17. Here's a link to a hand guard page I have been plugging along on creating. Pistol grips and buttstocks(with proper buffer spring and buffer) you can use most any AR-15 parts. There is a Magpul PRS specifically for the AR-10 and DPMS LR-308 rifles. Some pistol grips require a "wedge" to fill a void at the back of the grip. Magpul MIAD and some of the ERGO grips. You can see the difference here
  18. Robinson Arms, manufacturers of the XCR have filed suit yesterday in US District Court for Utah against Remington, Bushmaster, Rock River Arms, and Magpul Industries based on alleged infingement of their patent (Multi-caliber ambidextrously controllable firearm #7,596,900) issued 6 October, 2009 and initially filed in August of 2003. Specifically, the weapons alleged to have violated Robinson
  19. There's been a bit of complaining about the laser not being bright enough. Theres supposed to be a green version coming out. A visitor o one of my other sites had some dialog with NCStar about the issue. Heres a few of his images
