turborsx
I'm installing a low profile gas block on a 18" mid-length gas system on ranier arms LR 308 barrel, it's my first build and not that familiar with this area yet. The barrel has 1 dimple on the bottom part right under the gas port. Would a low pro gas block with 2 set screws work on this barrel? I'm not sure what the dimple is for. Thanks in advance

The dimple is there so you can properly locate the gas block on the barrel in the correct position. The rear-most set screw lines up to hit into that dimple. MikedaddyH
After its together check your work by spraying a can of compressed air down the barrel. With an empty brass case in the chamber, 1st down the barrel,2nd from the gas tube above the chamber with the muzzle plugged.

I don't use the set screw type GB's , so is it safe to say all set screw type GB's will line up as said above & be properly aligned with the barrels gas port , if Barrel dimpled , as said ? Just curious .

Just curious .Unless the barrel was dimpled wrong (rare on a known brand barrel), it'll line up. You can always check by taking out the rear set screw and looking through it to make sure the gas port at the top of the gas block aligns with it and then measuring the distance on the barrel from the shoulder to the center of the gas port and shoulder to center of the dimple to make sure they're the same.I've dimpled my own barrels by just using the gas block as a measuring device. 98Z5V
^^^ Exactly what Fark said. The dimple *should* be drilled on the barrel exactly 180 degrees opposite of the gas port in the top of the barrel - if it isn't, then the dimple is in the wrong place. I also use a gas block to dimple my own barrels. They drill the gas port in the gas block through the set screw hole. Those two line up directly, every time. Put gas block on the barrel, turn it over 180 degrees so you're looking down through the rear set screw hole and down into the barrel gas port, center the two holes up, measure your distance off the shoulder. Flip the gas block over, set the distance off the shoulder, and drill a dimple. Secure. Done. <thumbsup>
survivalshop
I don't have or have seen a pre-dimpled barrel( unless it was from the A2 sight taper pins) , maybe the one from Shadow Ops Weaponry will have a Dimple . I measure all of mine , using drill bits , to measure Port hole to Barrel shoulder & GB face to GB Port . Its not a good practice anymore to take their positions for granted . I like the idea of a Dimple for alignment , it should be Mandatory on all replacement barrels & make sure the GB manufacturers follow the same guid lines . Almost like MilSpec. <laughs> Edited January 13, 2015 by survivalshop
