george_995 Posted March 1, 2015 Report Posted March 1, 2015 Decent read, I never knew these existed. https://medium.com/war-is-boring/the-miniguns-smaller-cousin-was-a-flop-ab8ec8396afa
unforgiven Posted March 1, 2015 Report Posted March 1, 2015 Great read brother George, that might work with the Sig brace. >:D
Dane Armory Posted March 1, 2015 Report Posted March 1, 2015 28 lbs plus ammo... would be fun to weld it like Jessie V in the Predator.
392heminut Posted March 2, 2015 Report Posted March 2, 2015 Back years ago before General Dynamics bought the rights from G.E. I read an article on the 5.56 miniguns. They were pretty obscure back then and the article claimed that at that time there were actually only two working examples of the guns in existence. I'm guessing that since General Dynamics acquired the rights they've built more of them.
planeflyer21 Posted March 2, 2015 Report Posted March 2, 2015 Isn't the Dillion mini-gun a 5.56? Looks like they're having some success in sales.
392heminut Posted March 2, 2015 Report Posted March 2, 2015 Dillon Aero builds a 7.62 minigun but I don't know if they build a 5.56 version or not.
ChaseFan9 Posted March 27, 2015 Report Posted March 27, 2015 It's a pretty good idea on paper, but for the cost, not to mention the price of the platform to put it on, 7.62 and up are much more effective in a broader range of situations. And unless you're shooting blanks like ol' Jessie was, the strongest man in the world couldn't handle the recoil of a man-portable version. I think the recoil on the 5.56 version was something like 500 lb/ft/sec or something
ponce Posted March 29, 2015 Report Posted March 29, 2015 (edited) Up to 12,000 rounds per minute the article says. Considering how compact the minigun is, the 556 version must be even moreso. Edited March 29, 2015 by ponce
ChaseFan9 Posted March 29, 2015 Report Posted March 29, 2015 Up to 12,000 rounds per minute the article says. Considering how compact the minigun is, the 556 version must be even moreso. General Dynamics raised the cyclic rate to make it appeal more to the military (I assume), but I read GD replaced the XM214 in their catalogue with the Iron Fist ADS in 2011, which Rafale and IMI are continuing development on as of last December
