JA1235 Posted May 27, 2015 Report Posted May 27, 2015 Alright new to AR308s (But not ARs) I have a Windham weaponry "308 Hunter" with a mid length gas system that came with boyd's wood furniture and will take magpul furniture if you trim the heat shield , I just picked up a McGowen .338 barrel and went to put it on but it seems the gas system is shorter on the McGowen barrel and wont allow the magpul or boyd's furniture to fit. The McGowen barrel uses a normal AR15 mid length gas tube but the Windham gas system/gas block seems to be .297 further out on the barrel. My question is, is there list of who makes the longer mid length barrels / gas tubes to fit normal handguards? other than Windham.
98Z5V Posted May 27, 2015 Report Posted May 27, 2015 (edited) Looks like the Windham barrrel is setup using Armalite specs, at least for the lengths and distances. Edited May 27, 2015 by 98Z5V
survivalshop Posted May 28, 2015 Report Posted May 28, 2015 (edited) I think the front hand guard cap is 0.030" thick . Edited May 28, 2015 by survivalshop
98Z5V Posted May 28, 2015 Report Posted May 28, 2015 Maybe 0.030" thick. Definitely not 3/10" thick, though.
survivalshop Posted May 28, 2015 Report Posted May 28, 2015 Whoops , misplaced a "0" there . Ya, 3/10" is much bigger. So the Mid length Armilite is that much different then a std Mid length gas system, by 3/10 of an inch ?
survivalshop Posted May 28, 2015 Report Posted May 28, 2015 They are talking about rifle length gas systems in that thread . My question now is , if the wood hand guard that is on the Windham barrel fits , then it had to be made for a longer gas system , be it Armilite or what ever . I thought the Magpul mid length MOE hand guards were made to fit AR 15 Mid length gas system , so he is saying the Magpul will not fit the Mcgowen Mid length system , will it fit the Windham Barrels system ?. I guess I'm a little confused with what is the real problem , the gas system is different on which barrel ? Is the gas system short on the McGowen BBL. for the Magpul hand guard ? I'm missing something here .

I'm missing something here .It sounds to me like the McGowen barrel places the FSB too close to the barrel extension flange to fit the Magpul handguards since it uses a standard AR-15 mid-length gas tube. You'd need the longer AR-10 gas tube and further out gas port spacing to compensate for the longer barrel extension. Edited May 28, 2015 by FaRKle!
survivalshop Posted May 28, 2015 Report Posted May 28, 2015 (edited) You know , just when you think you have a handle on the various forms of the 308AR , another twist comes up from another manufacturer . Why ? A mistake from the Barrel maker ? I know some have had to alter more than just the heat shields to make the Magpuls work on 308AR's , 0.30 " is not all that much to compensate for , or is it ? Nothing a free float hand guard & low pro gas block won't fix <dontknow> Edited May 28, 2015 by survivalshop
