jtallen83
What is your idea of "mid-range"? I use a Bushnell that cost about $150 and is good to 800 yards on the right targets and maybe 600 on less reflective targets. It gives some dope for the angle and range based on some basic ballistic data you enter. You can spend $1,500 if you want more goodies...... http://www.amazon.com/Gunwerks-G7-BR2-Rangefinder/dp/B00J7QXE9C or over $4,000 if you really want all out; http://www.amazon.com/LRM-3500CI-Laser-Range-Finder/dp/B00601LDUE/ref=sr_1_1?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1435969653&sr=1-1&keywords=range+finders+for+hunting&refinements=p_36%3A1253559011 For under $20 and some walking you can use one of these; http://www.homedepot.com/p/Stanley-200-ft-x-1-2-in-Fiberglass-Long-Tape-34-793/203736121?cm_mmc=Shopping%7cBase&gclid=CjwKEAjw5disBRCA5r7OjsK_-UgSJAC27JPgmCba9UWp6kFs3A8PxHRQfEnJC2ZWjo19N_wm3d5VtRoCP7nw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds Edited July 4, 2015 by jtallen83

Tripledeuce
I asked this question of a friend who hunts all over the world. Rite now he's in Africa. He said it dosen't really matter. anything in the 400-500 $ range was good. When a new chip comes out, all the Co's have it withen 6 months. Put a Leaupold up aginst a swarsofkie(? spelling) they were withen 5 feet of eact other, out to @800 yards, as far as we could sight , at that time.
