planeflyer21
Like those tiny boats could be armored up anywhere close to what a tank is: http://www.businessinsider.com/a-10-attack-craft-iran-us-navy-2017-
blue109
Not too many things on earth that won't get obliterated by an A10 run. Would be a hoot to watch!

planeflyer21
Man it would be badass to see a "navalised" version put into new production, stationed on the helo-carriers. No catapults nor arresting gear would be needed.

I served on the USS Guadalcanal ( old one ) & there is not much deck to get up to speed for flight on one of those . I don't know , how long of runway does it take for an A10 to get in the air ? planeflyer21
Pretty good find, Shepp! A-10s have been stationed here at D-M AFB since I was about 8 or 9. They did some of the prototype evaluations here too. For airshows they go from brakes-on to airborne in 250'-300' with the gear retracting. On a carrier for fixed wing, it is always "into the wind" for launch. Hell, look at Doolittle's Raiders: IIRC, the USS Hornet was about the same size as the USS Guadalcanal. I would say the USS Hornet was 270' longer , USS Guadalcanal at 607' to the USS Hornet at 872' at Deck height . The Doolittle B 25's didn't need the full Deck to get airborne , Not sure how many feel it took for them to take off . The A10 Might make it , I would like to see the AF try . Not sure but I believe it was the movie 30 Seconds Over Tokyo that went into detail on this mission. The claim there was 500' or less that the crew had to have their loaded plane off deck. Get that ship chugging at full-steam and they can cut that distance quite a bit!
planeflyer21
Found this site: http://www.doolittleraider.com Only four of Doolittle's Raiders left with us. Those men performed a mighty, mighty service for our nation. After the Doolittle raid, the Japanese pulled back all sorts of men and weapons to ensure the homeland was protected. Nothing like getting your enemy to tie one of their own hands behind their back.

It was the first couple of rows that were sweating it a little I can only imagine. Once I took off in a C172 with three (other) fat corrections officers and full tanks, downwind. You want to talk about a s l o w rate of climb out! Like my buddy said of those WWII bomber crews, "Boy, they sure carried their balls in a bushel basket!"
