Being I live in NY if I want a hi-cap mag (legally anyway) it has to be pre-ban.  Finding pre-ban mags for AR-15's is a trivial task.  You have to overpay but you can get them easily.  I am wondering what the options are for an AR-10 in this regard, if any.

Yeah it's really ridiculous.  The dimwits that think these laws prevent crime have forgotten the that by definition criminals don't obey the law.

Maybe someone else with chime in but arent preban magazines a different design? I believe the current design is a response to the ban. Uncle Armalite will know for sure.

Or mrraley will know.  <thumbsup>

I'm thinking that the original AR-10s used the current SR-25 mag design, and once the ban went into effect all rifles since then use the current design.  I'd bet I'm far off, but it's something like that.  I know the current SR-25 mag design was the Armalite original design.

Actually, the early AR10's used converted M14 magazines.

That way they were made before the ban was in effect and were grandfathered in and able to be sold as high capacity mags during that time frame.

I know ArmaLite has a tech note on converting them and they have kits on their web site too.

Oh do they now? <thumbsup> Off I go... LOL  I'm game to try at least one.  However if it turns out  unreliable I'd rather have a reliable 10 round than an iffy 20.  First I need to find a pre-ban M14-M1A mag...

Thanks for stepping in here on this one.  <thumbsup>  I'm damn glad you're here.  ;D

Is this it? http://www.armalite.com/ItemForm.aspx?item=EA5085&ReturnUrl=Categories.aspx?Category=5d9a50a0-b098-44fd-bb5a-e9c08c192130

It looks like it included the mag body too? Essentially ALL of the parts...  Is the Mag body pre-ban?

I'm checking on your last question. In the meantime, here's a link to the ArmaLite Library. http://www.armalite.com/Categories.aspx?Id=Library

The tab on the very bottom is for all of our Tech Notes.

Will the kit work with a M-14 body?  However it says it's for converting M14 bodies so I assume it's a Gen 1 follower.  Correct?  It has to be in order to be for that purpose.  If so I could use the internals in a pre-ban M-14/M-1A mag.  Now I just need to find a place to get one of them....

The way it was explained to me was... with the kit only coming with the follower, mag body, and floor plate, but using a mag spring from an M14 mag that it might be alright to build.

This way your are not buying a complete Gen II mag and building it yourself.

It's real hard to keep up on other state magazine laws, but I'm trying.

Listen to MrRaley. He knows what he's talking about.

Either way I would need to find an M-14 preban mag for that too.  However I might opt to keep the floor plate too if it fit.  Being wrong in NY is a huge deal if you run into someone with a chip on their shoulder looking to make an example out of you.

With any luck in a couple more years I will be out of this God forsaken socialist state.

I saw elsewhere someone had posted that you could use an unconverted M-14 mag in an AR-10 in a pinch if you held the mag in manually.  Also that if you simply cut a new slot for the magazine catch and do nothing else you can still use the M-14 mag and the only thing that will not work is the bolt hold open.

Can anyone verify the veracity of these two statements?

I have several of the pre-ban "Gen-1" AR10 magazines; they were and still are crap. The magazine shell is flat on the back, which tells you it's a pre-ban and the newer magazines have a raised area. If you want to use the "Gen-1" mags to be legal I would put a newer follower [with the bolt catch extension filed off] in them to ensure proper function. The only problem with that is your last round fired will not leave the bolt open.

Unfortunately living in NY leaves me with few options I feel comfortable with.  It's ludicrous but I don't want to spend time or lose my ability or legally own a firearm over it.  I just have to deal with it until I can manage to move.
