Yep, and right now it will solve the issue, permanently. I completely forgot about that innovative little bastard.  That's the current cure, for sure.

I remember seeing a product at Brownells, cannot find it now. But it was a UHMW or other plastic disk that they intended you to stick on the front face of the buffer. If that was made to the correct dimensions it might work. it would more or less create a stepped front face on the buffer.

Check that your barrel extension is flush with the rear lower face of your upper receiver as shown in the attached pic, if it isn't then this is another reason why your buffer can be  contacting the retainer detent. it can be fixed by removing, in a lathe, the offending amount from the front of the receiver threads effectively shifting the extension/barrel rearward to it's correct position.

Update:  The offset retainer pin worked perfectly.  I did have to file a little bit on the receiver extension for the pin to orient correctly.

I think I'm done fixing this rifle now.  I put $200 into my $600 rifle to get it right.  Still cheaper than a $1200 rifle and I learned more about more about the AR platform!

Great news, but...     PICS!!!   Get a pic in here of it installed, and what you had to file - invaluable info for the next guy that has this issue.

The raised round part of the pin is on the forward edge.  On the rear is a straight cut step with the raised area to the front.  The lower part of the step is captured under the edge of the receiver extension like normal.  The pin would rotate left or right under the V cut of the tube.  I had to slightly widen the edges of the V so the pin would stay correctly oriented with the step to the rear and the raised pin to the front.  Tightening the castle nut securing the extension was difficult to get perfect as the tube would just slightly be turned left or right and rotating the pin off center.

The buffer face is now unmarked by the retraining pin.  Recoil is minimal and brass drops in a nice pile about 4ish o'clock.
