planeflyer21
Alrighty...Seems there are tons of "Spring and Pin" emergency kits out there for AR15 types. What should we have for our AR-308 rifles? With each manufacturer having their own proprietaryiedness (added to Webster's in a few years), what would you have for YOUR gun?Jon
skeeter
I cant really say what is a good set of anything extra to have on hand. Because everytime I order something with the intent on it being a spare part, a new gun seems to spawn from those extra parts. :o
Robocop1051
Skeeter, we know your situation all to well. I keep watering a MOE handguard hoping it will grow into a 300blk.

Just get them from a known good manufacturer & they come in handy. If you have a custom trigger , the trigger/hammer springs may or may not change your trigger spec's if you need to use them , but the other parts are very usable. Try to get a kit that has things like , extra firing pin , extractor/spring, gas rings , stuff like that .I think my 308 kit was from DPMS , I can take a photo of it , I think it has not been molested. 98Z5V
I keep watering a MOE handguard hoping it will grow into a 300blk.You're doing it wrong, brother - don't water it, sprinkle it with CLP twice a week. It only takes about 2 weeks for it to turn into something... Unless you add a few extra parts here and there, it'll turn into something that scares the hell out of you, though. :o Trust me on this. <thumbsup> ;DI agree with SS on this - keep parts on hand that, should they fail, will stop you from shooting. Gas rings. Extractor and Extractor springs (and inserts), even the o-rings that go around the springs. A spare bolt and cam pin. Firing pin retaining pin. Hell, firing pin, if necessary (with the bolt). Trigger and Hammer springs aren't a bad idea, as well as a disconnect spring (if that thing fails, you're doubling, or auto firing). Things that won't stop you from firing really aren't that important - detents and their springs typically won't fail, including the safety detent and spring. The bolt catch isn't going to fail, but if it does, it's not a quick-fix anyway. You're outta the fight, or competition, with that one. If the Bolt Carrier has an issue, something tells me you have some HUGE issues going on, and blew the upper and magazine apart - Suspect Foul Play. If you're going to a high round-count shooting course, carry a complete extra BCG with you, and a complete extra trigger assembly - you just never know. Taking a complete spare rifle is the best way, and the fastest way to get back on the range. Spare optics, whatever they may be, is a good idea, too. My $0.02. <dontknow>
98Z5V
Also, for common range guns that see routine maintenance, I always carry spare batteries for powered optics in the MagPul pistol grips. I have a small tackle box with all kinds of springs, detents, tools (allens, Torx, etc.) in the truck or cooler-filled-with-range supplies, with me. Spare batteries for powered optics are always on the gun. <thumbsup>
skeeter
Taking a complete spare rifle Exactly, after having the spares in the shop for a while you tell yourself, self its only $49.95 for a new stipped lower on sale at PSA, you already have all the parts for it, and then the cycle repeats with the upper, before you know it SHAZAAM! theres a complete new rifle! <dontknow> Hard to argue with self in that case. :oJust keep self logic away from wife logic. ;)
planeflyer21
Great suggestions! Thanks!I'm not planning on any competition at this point (thought the new American Confederation of Tactical Shooters http://www.actshooters.com/ looks very cool, and they have another chapter at Pima Pistol Club).I'm more concerned with when the zombies take over, and a tiny spring breaks and puts me out of action. Never make a habit of hauling around more than one longarm at a time.I'd asked RRA if they had a spare kit for the LAR-8, like they do for their LAR-15s, and got no reply. But you guys are helping me learn a LOT!Thanks!Jon
