In Idaho the ecosystem needed/needs them.  Their dams on snow fed mountain streams create ponds that warm the water into temperature ranges that trout can thrive in.  So they are beneficial and they let them procreate and multiply, save as many as possible.

Here in Wisconsin, those same dams on borderline too warm trout streams create ponds that warm the water even more, pushing it over the edge of trout sustainability causing summer kills.  For many years WI had a beaver eradication program on trout streams, even state sponsored bounties on them when fur prices crashed and no one wanted to trap them.

One state's savior is another's devil.

@98Z5V   In the 80s you could have been here with your rifle of choice stalking and shooting them.
