Been shooting Gas Gun PRS for over 5 years now, brother. I love it. Fire off any questions you have - I can short-cut your learning curve by a great margin. 2 hours ago, Armed Eye Doc said: @98Z5V will shoot almost any match.
NightStalker Posted yesterday at 10:35 AM Author Report Posted yesterday at 10:35 AM The normal question like what are the basic equipment to get started? Where and when are the matches in Arizona?
98Z5V Posted yesterday at 07:07 PM Report Posted yesterday at 07:07 PM Best way to start is get into an Open class, or similar, that doesn't have any equipment restrictions. Sounds backwards, but it's the best way to start - no limits on gear or gun. Rear bag is very necessary, and the best one out there is the Armageddon Gear Schmedium bag, with the Heavy fill. You'll use it for more than a rear bag - most of the time, it's the only thing supporting your rifle off some of these props and barricades. Bipod. You'll want one that cants and swivels. Alot of the things you support the bipod from are uneven. The MagPul bipod is the easiest, cheapest way to get both those features, and it doesn't need to be a QD bipod that you take on and off. Something to keep track of your holds for different distances. I userd a wrist coach for a little while, then switched to the Cole-Tac cheat sheets that I mount to my scope tube. You're going to encounter multiple targets (8~12 per stage) sometimes at 5 different distance, shooting from multiple barriers and props. There's alot of movement, so it helps to have your distance holds right there on the gun.

Probably the biggest match is Accurized AR at Cowtown, the 3rd Saturday of every month. That's the one I shoot the most. There are others out there, as well. Parabellum range in Kingman is the best range in the state, and I just got back from a .22LR match up there last weekend. They have a giant gas gun match up there on Nov 7th and 8th (2 separate matches, 1 per day). I'll be at that one for sure. There's a really decent match at Ben Avery the 1st Saturday of the month, AZ Practical RIfle. There won't be one in Sept, because it's Labor Day, but they'll pick back up.
NightStalker Posted yesterday at 07:39 PM Author Report Posted yesterday at 07:39 PM I need to go to Cowtown and observe first and see what’s going on I guess. I’m definitely interested
98Z5V Posted 18 hours ago Report Posted 18 hours ago (edited) Some other beneficial information to shortcut the process... More Rando Thoughts... Learn how to read wind, specifically, reading mirage. Out here in the desert, we don't have that soft prairie grass that blows in the wind, or leafy green trees to blow in the wind - All our plants are hard, stiff, sharp, want to poke or cut you, and don't flex in the wind. Or, it's a cactus. Mirage is about the only way to go for estimating wind direction and speed out here. The good thing is - mirage is everywhere, anywhere that you'll find a temperature variable - which is everywhere. That skill is portable, no matter where you go. Having accurate DOPE on your load is critical. The only positive way to do that is with (not only) the projectile data, but good weather data. Having weather on your phone is good, but it's only reading the nearest weather station to where you are, that it picks up. Not perfect, but plenty good. A Kestrel will give you weather right there where you are standing. It just can't get any better than that. Phone weather works, though. It doesn't suck. For the projectile numbers - Garmin Xero C1 or the new C2. Easiest way in the world to get accurate load/projo data. Plenty of us have them, so we'll meet up sometime and you shoot a batch across one. Practice, practice, practice... Sounds hard to do if you aren't on the range, but it's easier than you think. First, I need to spend more of your money. Get a shot timer that has a programmable/delayed start. There are plenty on Amazon. I have a PACT Club Timer II, and they have a III version out now. Whatever works. You can get a ton of valuable training in with simple things, and 10 rounds of ammo. You could use a sawhorse as a barricade. Folding metal chair as a barricade. Test yourself, first, then define a goal. First round. Set your sawhorse up, timer clipped to your non-firing side front or side pocket, gun loaded, chambered and on Safe, all equipment in hand - and start the delay on the timer... When the beep goes off, set your shooting bag on the sawhorse, gun on bag, acquire your target, and send ONE accurate, on-target round downrange. The timer will stop when it registers that shot. Check your time... Repeat, repeat, repeat, that's practice. My personal goal, no matter what the obstacle or barricade or prop is - 10 seconds. I train to that. I can get the beep, get bag and gun on prop, build a stable position, acquire the target and send the accurate, on-target round, under 10 seconds. You gotta think about it - if you have 4 different shooting positions, and you have 90 seconds per stage, and it takes you 20 seconds to build a stable position and send a round - you're spending 80 of your 90 seconds just setting up and sending one round per position... What if you have 3 targets/distances per position? For all 4 positions? Time will get you... Building a stable position and sending an accurate shot - is the most valuable thing you can train for all this stuff... I kid you not, I've seen people take 45 seconds to send the first shot. 60 seconds to send the first shot... It's painful to watch, because you already know what's going to happen...
