Ok I have two rifles 1 is a carbine length gas system with collapsible stock the other is a A2 with A2 stock and 20 inch barrel rifle length gas system so if i wanted to switch the uppers i would just switch out the buffers and springs as well?

No, unless I am high as hell right now and maybe and not know it, you can not put that big A2 buffer and spring in that collapsible stock.

If you want to switch uppers then just do it and leave the lowers alone.

Ok so if I put the m4 on the A2 stock i don't think a rifle lenght  buffer would work with the M4 upper or visa vera am i correct or am i having a Doh! moment?

The upper has nothing to do with it. You are over complicating your life.

The buffer and buffer spring are dependent on the type of stock not the upper or gas tube length

I am having a hard time following, but if you keep the internal components with its respective tube you will be fine.  The M4 will cycle the A2 and the rifle length gas will cycle the collapsable stock.  Is that what you were asking?

Ok I am dense But I got it ... the stock is what determines the spring and buffer not the upper I was confused by all the buffer switching going on with Ar10's trying to get them to cycle correctly I will swap them out today and shoot them thanks

Good, swap and shoot. Like Imschur said, the buffer and spring only are related to the stock being used.

To clarify on the 308's, wapping out for heavier buffers will help with over gassed rifles to slow the cyclic rate down, helping with proper cycling.

To muddy the waters here...  <lmao>

Same thing is true on the 5.56 guns.  Collapsible stocks.  Carbine receiver extensions.  That's why we have standard (weighted) buffers, H buffers, H2 buffers, and H3 buffers - for the 5.56 guns with carbine receiver extensions.

Roger, they work flawlessly I love to learn stuff it exercises my underworked and old brain next for the A2 carbine Eotech 512... :)
