mineralman55 Posted April 5, 2013 Report Posted April 5, 2013 What are the pros and cons of mounting the front iron sights on the gas block or on the front end of a free-floating handguard. I've seen it both ways,
planeflyer21 Posted April 5, 2013 Report Posted April 5, 2013 Cons of the gas block are supposedly a changing point of impact when the rifle gets hot. While I know that can happen with other rifle platforms that have sights in temperature changing areas, on the ARs I mount it all on rails. Jon
Robocop1051 Posted April 6, 2013 Report Posted April 6, 2013 I mount for whatever is the longer sight radius. I have a set of Magpul MBUS sights mounted on the gas blocks of my .308, .300Blk and a 5.56. None of them have any signs of melting. I have a set of Troy DiOptic sights on my 5.56 piston gas block, and they seem to be holding just fine. My problem with mounting on a rail is that not all rails are 100% rigid. I have a Troy Alpha rail on my 7.62x39 build. The rail seems to shift just a hair when the front of it gets whacked. My Daniel Defense and Apex rails are sturdy enough to build a card house on. I guess it all comes down to how much $$$ you're willing to spend.
Rsquared Posted April 6, 2013 Report Posted April 6, 2013 I guess it all comes down to how much $$$ you're willing to spend. Doesn't it always seem to come down to that?
unforgiven Posted April 6, 2013 Report Posted April 6, 2013 ^^^^^^ And that's the bottom line. <thumbsup>
