NTXshooter
If I want to register an SBR that I am going to build with a purchased lower receiver, do I have to add any engraving for additional identification for the Form 1? Or is the serial number on the lower enough?
98Z5V
If you're building an SBR from a stripped lower, then YOU are the manufacturer. Your info needs to be engraved on the lower. Name and City/State.
NTXshooter
OK. Thanks for the help.
392heminut
Hey Tom, I have a question along the same line. Mine and Josh's SBR's will be in a trust. Do we engrave the name of the trust and city/state?
Rsquared
The name of the trust (more than likely) is what you filled into box 4H on the form 1. I have mine set up the same way between my son and I. Whatever you filled into that box on the form 1, is what you have to get engraved onto the lower. 392heminut
Thanks Ron! That's kind of what I figured. <thumbsup>
Rsquared
Wait a minute. You were a cop. Aren't you supposed to know this $hit? <laughs>
gnatshooter
This is sounding like engraving a lower is a fairly easy standard thing. Is it really? I'd take mine in for a small engraving job, but I'm not sure where I'd go to ask for that.
Rsquared
You have to file the Form 1 with the ATF first. Wait the 6-8 months. Then get the engraving done. You could possibly get the engraving done while you wait for the tax stamp from the ATF. But you couldn't "legally" assemble the rifle before that. My local Class 3 dealer says the engraving has to be done before the Form 1 is sent in because the receiver has to be described in the form and the manufacturer's name and location engraved on the receiver is a pertinent part of that description. There are a lot of places that can do it that come up by doing an online search. I'm getting mine done by a local 'smith who makes AR-15 barrels for Brownells. If you can find someone local you can save the expense of shipping a 'firearm'.

Always better safe than sorry when dealing with BATFE brother. It's one healluva long wait. But after building multiple SBR's, the location of the "manufacture" doesn't matter. If it did, it would have (yet) another box to fill in on the Form 1. I can PM you copies of mine if it would help. But it's basically just a Form 1 that's been filled in. Rsquared
Actually. I can't attach the PDF to the PM. PM me your email address Larry, and I'll send you a copy of what I submitted (just for reference). For what it's worth. I used these guys to do my engraving. And they did a pretty quick turn-around.http://www.orion-arms.com/ Edited July 5, 2014 by Rsquared

NTXshooter
I got lucky, I found an engraver only a couple of miles from me. Now to finish my Form 1 and get it turned in..
392heminut
Ron, by location I didn't mean where the engraving was located, I meant the location of the manufacturer (city and state). Sorry about that, after I went back and read that post I thought "Well, that sure sounds confusing!" <lmao>
Magwa
Ok here is a question on this subject lets say you have a few black rifles can you take one of them and take that lower and use it for a short barreled build then after you get your stamp can you use it for both uppers long and short? and would you need to engrave it ,since it already has a manufacturer and serial number on it?
Rsquared
You always have to get them engraved. Just for the ATF compliance. Once they're registered as SBR lowers, you can use them for any length upper. Long or short.....doesn't matter. And even though you have to state a barrel/overall length, you don't have to worry about it once it's registered. You can run even shorter uppers on it if you want. They just want their 200 bucks for the stamp, and make you jump through the hoops. After that.....it's game on.

Rsquared
The model that's engraved on the side of the receiver from the manufacture. PM me your email Mike and I'll send you a copy of one of mine as an example. I did the same for Larry.
