I believe it was due in part to the similarity of a long time manufacturers trademark name.

The "X" is more or less a way of representing '10' with roman numerals. If they come out with an IRA-VX, we'll know what's going on....  ;)

The older IRA-10D was DPMS compatible, and the older IRA-10A was Armalite compatible.  The "-10" part wasn't liked, so it was dropped for the "IRA-X" moniker.  The only pics you'll see on their website now are of the older "IRA-10D" stamped/engraved lowers, but I don't think they ship like that anymore.
