  1. Thanks for the heads up on the brass. I think I'll order some also, if for no other reason than to see if the different brass has any effect on the velocity. You say that you expect your next loads to be higher FPS. I'm thinking that if you get even close to 2300 out of your barrel, my 18" will likely be able to make it. I'm trying to be patient and not be a pain in the ass to my barrel guy, but I think I'm going to have to give him a call this week to see if it's almost done. I'll to be out of town next week but I'd love for it to be waiting for me when I get back.
  2. I see that Brownells has started what is described as a multi installment tutorial on building an accurized Rem 700 bolt gun. I'ts got me very interested in the idea of trying my hand at a bolt gun build. I'm just not sure how it would work out financially compared to a .308 AR build? Anyone care to comment on that?
  3. That's one good looking receiver. On the one hand I'm wishing I had waited and built my carbine with the monolithic rec set. On the other, part of me is glad that I just finished my build. I'd have a hard time dealing with that 1K hit to start a Mega Mono build. Looking forward to seeing the finished builds of the other posters. Anyone know what the weight of the set is and the length of the rail?
  4. I wasn't referring to the members here, who as far as I know have no ax to grind, badmouthing JD. I was talking about (if true) Kaiser posting negative things because of personal feelings coming out of their partnership. And as Imschur stated, My dealings with Greg were also positive. I can say nothing negative about the quality of the parts I purchased or the way the business transaction was conducted. Of course, We all know you can't make everyone happy all the time, and if your in business you will eventually find yourself dealing with an unreasonable customer that is never satisfied. I was just trying to say that if the two ex partners have issues with each other, it would be more professional for them to air them privately than online. Or on the other hand, If You have an issue with someone and wish to make negative comments/statements/accusations, You should state your name and not attempt to do it anonymously. I never saw the original post and have no idea if, in fact it was posted by Kaiser. Just saying that IF it was, he ought to seek a different venue to air his grievances/feelings.
  5. I don't know if this is of any use to anyone, and it's not complete because I don't have a C products mag to measure, or a JD receiver to compare to my other receivers. I took some measurements and found that of the 3 mags I have available to measure, the DPMS measures 2.93" front to back not counting the center rib 3.085"with the rib, and 1.08" wide. The KAC mag measures 2.93", 3.08", and 1.065" wide, while the Pmag I measured is 2.940 front to back without the rib, 3.085 front to back over the center rib,and 1.07" wide. Although there is some variation here, on the mags I checked, the Pmag was actually bigger front to back than the others. Now I didn't check multiple mags of each type to get an average and I don't have a JD receiver to try my mags in, but all my receivers took the three types of mags snugly (although I never assembled the POF and have yet to fire the Kaiser) Robocop, Have you tried the mag that the mfg recommends? If that's also sloppy you might possibly have a bad lower and maybe JD would replace it?
  6. I would agree that it doesn't make you look any better to try and make your competitor look bad. I'm guessing that the fact that Kaiser is presently out of business might have something to do with the posting. Maybe some jelousy here. Not that that justifies it. I don't know if any of you guys Know why the partnership dissolved but there might be some other factors contributing to why Kaiser would feel compelled to publisize JD's legal problems. Too bad. From my experience it looked like Greg made a good product and JD's receivers seem to be very popular. And with the present political climate I don't think it's in our best interest to make anyone in the industry look bad.
  7. You said that you had problems with loose primers in your LC brass, that was used brass, correct? The reason I'm asking is that I bought 1K of new LC brass from Midway and cut it down in preperation for loading once the dies show up. Do you think I can expect similar primer pocket problems with new LC brass? Also, Is the ww 269 considered a hotter/more powerful powder than the H110? I wonder How the "Lil Gun" compares to these others? I'm sure hoping that I'm not cutting it so close with the power factor that I find the case capaacity of the LC is an issue. Since I'm unable to do any testing myself at this time, I find myself hanging on each of your posts to see where your testing takes you as far as muzzle velocity goes. It will also be very interesting to see if the fastest loads turn out to be the most accurate. I'm also curious to see how how the same load performs in your 1/8 barrel vs my 1/10.
  8. SR Gold trigger arrived today. I just installed it. Don't know how soon I'll be able to get to the range but when I dry fire it feels VERY NICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!. Maybe a little more takeup than my AR-15 Gold trigger, but a really light, crisp break. I can't wait to try this trigger out at the range.
  9. The bolt carrier I ordered is presently on back order, so I figure that once the barrel comes in (no word on that yet) I'll assemble the upper and if the dies still aren't here (also still on back order) I'll ask my friend to load some rds for me and I'll use the Youngs NM bolt carrier from the AR that I'm using the lower of (gotta love that parts commonality). That way I'll at least be able to break in the barrel and get some baseline of what velocity it's capable of. Then, just like you, I'll try different combinations of bolt carrier, buffer and spring to see how they each effect both velocity, and felt recoil. I think this gun with it's adjustable gas block is going to give me the chance to experiment and hopefully learn a lot about how heavier/lighter springs, buffers and bolt carriers effect the performace of the AR guns. I'm also hoping that I'll be able to take that knowledge and apply it to my .308 AR's. Regarding the powder, As I understand it, N110 has similar performance to H110 but is less temperature sensitive. Is that accurate?
  10. They don't generally chrono at our local club matches, but it's routine at the bigger matches. It's also kind of an honer system thing. If I'm going to shoot against the guys who shoot minor, I should be actually shooting major if I want to take advantage of the scoring advantage. Since I'm going to have more of a hassle with loading my ammo, I may eventually decide it's more trouble than it's worth, but I won't know until I try, that is of course providing I can make major PF in the first place. I ordered my bolt carrier, so now I'm just waiting for the barrel and the dies. The way things are going, it looks like your going to end up doing all the load development and all I'm going to have to do is make a few test loads and I'll be set. Thanks for your R&D Survivalshop!!! I emailed Powder Valley about the N110 powder and was told that they expect a shipment from VV in April, but they don't know if it will include N110. Do you know of any other sources to get it ?
  11. I just got notification from Brownells, that my SR GOLD trigger was in stock. I don't know how many they got in, or if they're all spoken for, but if anyone's looking for one you might want to give them a call. I also was told this week by someone at Pact that they should have more available in two to three weeks, so they may be easy to find in the near future. I'm very excited. Now I'll be able to try out my Kaiser build. Thanks for your info, Imschur.
  12. Thanks for the compliment ROBOCOP, The rail is actually a Noveske 14" rail that I bought used, As I'm sure you know it's made by SWS, but the SWS rails are different lengths than the ones they make for Noveske. I actually had planned to use the rail for a rifle length gas system gun because it works out to be even with the front of the gas block on a rifle lenght gas system, but ended up going with something else on that build so I had it left over. The problem is that the rails I like ( SWS E1 and Daniel Defense Lite) are either, only 1 1/2" shorter than this one, or so short that they expose the whole gas block (which I don't like) I couldn't justify spending $350-$400 just to get a rail 1.5 " shorter. Maybe down the road. What I'd really like would be one of the Noveske 10" AR-10 rails, which would be perfect with my carbine length gas system, but so far have had no luck finding one. The barrel is a Noveske 14.5" Afghan barrel with the BABC to bring it to 16.5" barrel length. It actually has very mild recoil, but is a little bit heavy (but well balanced) at 11 lbs as pictured with the TR-24. I'm actually very excited because I just got the word that the trigger that I've been waiting months for came in, so I'll finally be able to finish my Kaiser build with the ABS barrel. The only thing that's going to hold me back on that one is the optic. I don't have a high power scope and my gun budget is pretty much tapped out for a while. But at least I'l be able to try it out.
  13. I actually made a mistake. What I meant was that if I could get 2300 with the 145 gr I would make my PF goal. At this point everything I've read from others, including yourself, would seem to indicate that it's not likely. As you mention. Different barrels give different performance. Two things that may possibly help me are my longer barrel, and the different twist. I guess we'll find out once it's assembled. Something else had occured to me. I'm planning to go with a low mass bolt carrier, lightened buffer and an adjustable gas block. I'm wondering if the reduced gas needed to cycle the action might translate to a little more muzzle velocity. That gun rest looks pretty nice, does it stay put when you shoot the .308?
  14. This is mine. I haven't shoot it for groups yet but since installing the heavier hammer spring, it functions 100% with all my ammo, including the mil stuff.
  15. Is there a particular person at Pact that you would suggest I try to speak to?
  16. Survivalshop, I'm frustrated because I can't enlarge your pictures so I can get a good look at it with the Troy rail. From what I can see with my poor eyesight, it looks pretty impressive in that two tone color. I agree with you that it will look better with a different CAR type stock. I found a post from someone on quarterbore that said they got 2300 fps from 18.5 gr of H110 behind a 125 gr boattail. If I can duplicate that from the 18" , I will have achieved my PF goal, then it will be a question of how accurate, and out to what range will I be accurate, without too much holdover. Looking forward to seeing pics of the complete 300 rifle. Man I sure hope my barrel gets shipped this week.
  17. I didn't ask the gentlemans name. It was the person that answered the phone. I wasn't connected to a second ext, or person.
  18. I've been waiting since December for one of these triggers for my Kaiser. I called both Brownells and Pact within the last week. Brownells tells me that they are at Pacts mercy and every updated ETA they give me, is what Pact tells them. When I spoke to Pact this week they told me that the .308 triggers "should" be available within 3 weeks. We'll see.
  19. I got a call from my barrel mfg today. Told me that they had gotten a new blank and turned it. Only need to thread and chamber it. Told me it should go out the beginning of the week. If true, thats good news, but your numbers make it seem doubtful that I'll be able to make my desired 320 PF. They did tell me that the 1/10 twist might help. but I can't imagine getting more than 100 fps out of my 18" barrel over your 16". I was wondering, with your two hottest loads, was there any more room in the case for more powder? This may turn out to be a light, fun, hunting gun, but maybe not a major division comp gun. Regaardless, I'm still excited about building my first wildcat cal. AR.
  20. So what's the trick? How do you guys get your wives to not only ok purchases like lathes and loaders, But ACTUALLY BUY them? Is it hypnosis?
  21. Tacblade, I was wondering if you had done any testing with that adjustable gas block yet? I've decided that I want to try the JP low mass bolt carrier on the 300 I'm presently putting together. I have an adjustable GB on it also, and was wondering if it was much trouble tuning the gas impulse for minimum needed to cycle? By the way, I really like the look of the Vtac handguard. Any idea what it weighs?
  22. I located some KAC preban mags so I'm god to go. thanks. I also have two KAC 20 rd mags that are LEO marked with a mfg date of 7/00 if anyone can use them. I'm asking $60 each for the pair, shipped. Which is less than I paid for them, the seller told me that were preban!
  23. I like my barrel to fit snugly into the upper with little or no play. I'm suprised how much the ID of the different uppers I've measured have varied. I guess if your equipped to build barrels and install barrel extensions, possibly you could turn down an oversize barrel extension to match your upper's ID but since I am not set up for that, if I find that I have a barrel that's loose in the upper, I use stainless steel shim stock wraped around the barrel extension to make a snug fit that goes in with light pressure. Interestingly, on all of the barrels I've measured the barrel extensions were the same OD plus or minus .001" while I've found that the different uppers I've measured have varied up to .006" It may not matter that much but I like the idea that my barrel extension is (hopefully) concentric with the bolt carrier bore in the upper.
  24. http://bulletin.accurateshooter.com/2011/02/what-makes-an-ar-accurate-whitley-offers-answers/ I read this recently and thought that it had several good points. based on what it says, every one of my guns has something wrong with it!
  25. Bill at highercapacity.us offers 32 and I think 40 rd DPMS pattern mags which he makes by welding two 20 rd mags end to end. I have one of the 32 rd mags which has worked 100% so far. They're kind of pricey and heavy as hell when loaded. They actually change the balance of the gun but if you have a need you might want to give a look. Also, Armageddonmag.com offers 30 and 40 rd mags that he makes, I think from scratch. I haven't tried them but you could check it out for yourself . If you try one you should post your experience with it.
