Rainier has their Ultramatch barrels back in stock built off of Shilen blanks....I ordered one in 20" for the heck of it, so thinking of another build

I would also stick with the POF upper, that way you know the fit will be good. Below is my POF P308, this a factory gun, 16", no mods other than working the trigger over. On my POF's I normally don't like the trigger, however they can be given a little work and are pretty good.

I know this thread is a bit old, but I haven't seen a tool to do the larger uppers. I do have the tools for the standard upper, and there are two that Brownells sells, one is a cutter and the other is a lapping tool. One word of caution, you want to do as minimal changes to the receiver face as to not change tolerances. I use the cutter slowly to see how unsquare the receiver is, and then lap it. As far as lapping compound in the upper, oh well, easy to clean out. I think the biggest advantage is to make sure everything is square. I have seen a receiver of a 6.5 Grendel that broke two bolts because the receiver was not square and putting torque in the bolt/extension, after squaring the receiver, no more broke bolts. here is some good explanation and how little material is removed: http://www.kiesfirearms.com/Centerfire.html

Wilson Combat 7.62X40 WT - The Practical .30 AR Solution
elkbow replied to 98Z5V's topic in Wilson Combat 7.62 x 40 WT
well, it is interesting, Ben Triplett who owns Bison did something others thought about, and that was making a 6.8 in to a subsonic platform. So when you think abut subsonic, you just need to push a heavier bullet at subsonic speeds, which is generally 1050fps for most locations (elevation, humidity, etc.), well heck you don't even have to push a heavier bullet, but if you want to hunt with it, the heavier the better. As you know, in order to stabilize those bullets, the twist rate has to be right (even though twist rate sometimes is misunderstood as far as stability goes). The only other gun in the AR platform that can reliably cycle the round is the 300 Blackout. The Blackout is a shortened version of the .223 case and generally shoots a 240 grain bullet, usually the SMK, not make for subsonic purposes and doesn't expand well. The other problem with the Blackout, not really impressive speeds supersonic due to the limited case capacity. Currently the Blackout barrels are 1:8 twist, however chatting online with AAC, looks like they will be switching to 1:7 twist here shortly. So, now comes in to play the 6.8 BSP. Ben made a 1:7 twist barrel that will shoot almost any of the 6.8's .277 bullets supersonic, and yet will handle the 200gr bullet that is being custom made by Woodleigh bullets. And, will cycle both supersonic and subsonic, suppressed or unsuppressed. A bold move from Ben, but I think a great one. I'm waiting on the bullets to come in, already built a 16" upper. So how does it work....ah, thought you would ask: Subsonic Suppressed: Subsonic Suppressed full-auto: Supersonic Suppressed full-auto: -
Hard decision there, I've got a 16" POF P308 and drives tacks, I really like the gun, but only shot the LWRCI other than the Armalite I owed, so not much help here.

Wilson Combat 7.62X40 WT - The Practical .30 AR Solution
elkbow replied to 98Z5V's topic in Wilson Combat 7.62 x 40 WT
thanks, i ordered a Wilson Whisper suppressor in 7.62, which will mate up close to the end of the forearm, so the overall length will be similar to a 18" barrel rifle. That upper is a 14.7" barrel with pinned on brake/suppressor mount, not that I plan on shooting it subsonic, but will knock down the sound and can use the suppressor on my 300 BLK and the 6.8 BSP (Bison subsonic platform, 1:7 twist shooting 200gr Woodleigh bullets) and of course my other 6.8's, POF .308, etc. -
Wilson Combat 7.62X40 WT - The Practical .30 AR Solution
elkbow replied to 98Z5V's topic in Wilson Combat 7.62 x 40 WT
it is quite a bit different than the 300 BLK, I have both of them, the 300 blk is geared towards subsonic suppressed performance, the 7.62x40WT is geared towards supersonic performance using .308 bullets in a reformed 5.56 case, which basically you trim off the neck and run it through their dies. Barnes has now also specifically made a 110gr TTSX bullet for it that will expand at lower velocities, making this a great medium sized game caliber like deer. I know Bill has taken a bunch of hogs and deer with it. I set mine up with a PVS-14, 3x Magnifier and an Eotech EXPS3-0 for hogs, just waiting on the paperwork to suppress it: -
thats good to hear, even though I own a couple of POF's, haven't had to contact them as I haven't had any issues
-
so true, but they usually shoot very well also....

i could show all the pictures....different things I have mounted on some of my guns, .....Pulsar N550 night vision scope, several other brands of scopes, green laser, TexasBoars DDT light and other TB lights (night hog hunting), multiple other lights, grips, etc.

well a few parts in the mail, the rest of the parts to complete my 7.62x39 build I also last week received a LAR-458 SOCOM, working on loads for it now.... Just put a Pulsar N550 Digisight Night Sight on my POF 6.8.... other than that, keeping me busy for now

thanks for the comments, that is my 7th bull with the bow, taken one cow also (normally only last day, last evening if nothing else is around).... nothing like hunting elk during the rut, they weren't very vocal this last season, too warm of weather...not many cows in the area, but the few days they did get worked up I was on them....this bull just happen to be the only thing bugling, and early at 5:30 PM....his mistake lol

Figured I would post up for your reading enjoyment, took place on September 20, 2010. Bull started bugling at 5:30 in the evening, figured it was one of the bulls we seen before with now cows, so i just used the cow call and not bugling. He came up the ridge from around 1/2 mile away. I picked a shooting lane that I was hoping he would come through, downwind. I seen him coming, drew the bow, so what does he do...of course, he stops right before the shooting lane. I held for over a minute, he finally bugles and then steps out and the rest is history. He made it about 100 yards straight down the ridge, of course on the wrong side i needed to pack him out on. We worked on cutting him up that night, put in game bags, left hanging in the trees, got done about midnight. Went back out the next morning and that was work, 3 trips with two of us and a game cart. Game carts are great, even on the steep hills, pulling them up isn't fun, but better than packing on your back. This bull had a huge body, estimated he was over 900 pounds, just the head, cape and antlers weighed alot. Anyways, got it all done, and then loaded everything on the Polaris 850. Now that was funny, thats alot of weight, and we put on more than the racks are supposed to handle, but it handled it with a breeze. The hard part was strapping everything down, and keeping that big ole head and antlers from moving. Bull is a 6x6, scores 354. i get bored sometimes hunting, and I like to photograph animals also, this little guy was pissed at me, thought it was a funny pic, he tried biting me when I picked him up, but didn't have much for teeth lol:

nice pics, need to follow them in a couple of months when they shed their antlers
