Redi-Mag type device for AR10?
RayGun19 replied to RayGun19's topic in AR-10 General, Technical Discussion
No worries. Just wondering as I didn't get what you were saying. I'm thick like that sometimes. <laughs> I'll look into what type of composite would work the best and not be overly bulky. I would think something as thick as the magazine well is wouldn't be too much or cumbersome. My idea is to basically replicate the mag well and magazine catch area, and make the rest lightened, leaving a cap to protect the ammo in the fresh magazine. I also like the concept that the main mag release would drop both magazines. I know there are arguments for and against, but if you're going for the back up magazine, I'm guessing the faeces has hit the oscillating cooling unit, and you're not really going to care where the first magazine goes. -
Redi-Mag type device for AR10?
RayGun19 replied to RayGun19's topic in AR-10 General, Technical Discussion
Yes, I understand who makes the Redi-Mag. I'm not really sure what your point is though? Are you saying one can't be made from composite material? C-130J aircraft airframes are almost entirely composites, rather than aluminum like the older C-130s. So the material is strong enough, and can be machined. I know, because the last 4 years I was in the AF I crosstrained over to AirCraft Fabrication, and we had to take special classes on machining them. I only mentioned a composite material, as it can be machined (so I could CNC it if there was a demand) and it would be light. -
That's not enough to even worry about! I'm also interested that the heavier 175gn bullet did better than a 168gn bullets. Heavier is always better (or worse for the guy on the receiving end.) LOL

Redi-Mag type device for AR10?
RayGun19 replied to RayGun19's topic in AR-10 General, Technical Discussion
I don't know about tough. I think that depends on your fabrication skills. And those I have in spades. I do have a Redi Mag to go off of. I just need to get the magazine catch parts and I'm off and running. I don't think I'd want to lug an extra 20-25 round magazine around all the time, but in a combat rifle match (or if you're going on a direct action mission) it would give you that edge up front. I'm going to build one, and might even CNC the main well. We'll see. I know the Redi Mags are stamped, and the new ones are polymer I think. If I was to CNC it, a composite would be the way to go. Strong, and light. -
Would any of you guys be interested in something like this for your AR10? I've been toying with producing one for myself. More than likely it would be 6061T6 aluminum and machined rather than stamped, but I may attempt fabricating one from steel like the Redi-Mag. For sure it would use a stock type magazine catch (as in off the shelf Armalite part). Thoughts?

I have a 16" on mine, with an AAC muzzle brake. I was more concerned about length, and new the range would be affected slightly over a 20" barrel. But, as I have a long rifle for out to 1000m, I wasn't too worried about that. If the zombies ever rise, I know I have the ballistic energy out to 4-500m with my AR10, and beyond that with the long rifle. <thumbsup>

What about using some Rockset and a spare Allen key. That stuff is ridiculously strong. If you get the two to join, and use slow, even pressure, you may be able to get the pin out. If you have a burr on the threads, it may be time to see an armorer.
-
Anything Advanced Armament Corps. Their stuff is top notch, and they are good people.
-
I'm 6'1", 185, 44" chest. Fits me fine. Plenty of length, and fits in the upper body fine.
-
It'll be pinned in the usual fashion. Or are you talking about the hand guard adapter? If so, it'll be a fixed to the front sight/gas block with a screw. We'll thread the gas tube hole. Then it's just a matter of installing the hand guards. After all the advice from different sources, I just went with the carbine. I'll post some pics of it when it's done. I've been looking at the wifes Redi-Mag, and I think I'm going to fabricate one for my AR10 and see how I like it. It might be too heavy. But then again, 40 rnds of 7.62 probably isn't far from 60 rnds of 5.56. And in a combat rifle match, it might come in handy.

Maybe I'll use a little valve lapping compound on it. Just on the upper. Yeah, no sledge. I'm sure a cleaning rod and a multi-tool I could tap it in and out. If it's supposed to be that tight, then I'll leave it. Oh, and yes, there is a tight fit between the upper and lower, with no gaps.
-
I could tap it in. But then you have to tap it out. Which makes for a difficult field strip. The barrel nut became loose. Something went wrong with the upper receiver, and either cracked or stretched the threads. The barrel is fine, but the upper is junk. It was only $300 for the DPMS upper, and it had a MAGPUL MOE rifle length hand guard too.
-
Ok, I'm hoping someone can advise me on here without having to register over on AR15.com to ask just one questions. A friend came to me with an Olympic Arms carbine. the upper was junk, and I knew of a buddy selling a nice DPMS upper for cheap. So my friend went a bought it, and they mate, almost. The rear take down pin will almost go in. I'm guessing something like 0.003-0.005 is stopping it from going through. It's not that the two holes aren't the same size, they are slightly misaligned. So, as a machinist, I would say just ream the holes and use a slightly oversized pin. But I'm not a gunsmith or armorer. So I'd like some advise. The pivot pin fits fine. And the upper and lower mate tightly. It's just the rear pin. Oh, and both holes are 0.250 standard pin size. Advice? (other than throw away the lower LOL. That's not in her budget).

I looked around for an AR10-type rifle. None of the shops around here had one used, and Illinois can be a bitch. So I ordered the cheapest one (meaning that had stuff I was going to just take off and replace anyway) that had the configuration closest to what I wanted to end up with. Trust me, if money wasn't an object, I would have just built what I wanted from the receiver up. Which I might still do, and then sell this one. It would just take longer.

I'm getting two of these. One for my AR10, the other for the wifes M4. SOCOM uses them in everything. If anything else was better, they'd be buying them. That's enough for me to lay out the cash for them.
-
I'm not surprised. The military should run the battlefield. It didn't work for Nixon to try and run a war from Washington either.

I asked Armalite guy, and he says the Carbine is the way to go. I'm not sure how Fulton does it, but I'm sure it works. The barrel has a .750 diameter under the gas block, and then VISIBLY necks down to a smaller diameter from there to the muzzle device. When I have it in hand, I'll mic it and tell you guys what the diameter is. I'm sure they necked it down to lower the rifles weight at the front end. The front "gas block" will just be a dummy, and just mount the hand guard. It'll be easier when I post photographs. If you look at a Bushmaster "Dissipator" with the hand guards off, you'll see what I'm doing.

The issue is all on them now. We sent the LAR-8 back, and I have an AR10A4C that should be here maybe Friday or Tuesday (the shop isn't open on Monday). A low profile gas block will replace the current A4 rail block at the carbine length system location. I just need to figure out how to get a .625 bore gas block on the reduced barrel area now. I don't have the rifle yet, but it looks like there is a larger diameter just behind the bird cage. I suppose this could be turned down, add the .625 rail gas block, then thread the barrel another 1/4", face the barrel a 1/4", and then install the new AAC muzzle brake with some Rock Set so it's permanent (which should satisfy any legal types having an issue with a 15.750" barrel.
-
I'll take some today or tomorrow and post them.

So, I'm thinking of getting a Bazooka Brothers BAZ45 upper and stripped lower. Anyone have any experience with these guys? They seem like good folks. And the idea of a lower that takes all stock AR15 parts, and an M3 Grease Gun magazine just rocks. I've probably got everything I need in the parts bin from other projects for the lower.

I bought an AR10. I was going to get a LAR-8, but their service upon initial order, and the magazine issues turned me away. I'm selling all my FN magazines tonight, and ordering replacement AR-10 magazines tomorrow. I'm still trying to determine if I can build a 16" barrel rifle with full length hand guard /sight radius but having a 20" barrel model cut down, or if I need to have a 16" barrel model fitted with a low profile gas block and moving the sight gas block forward. Anyone know the answer to this? Hopefully it'll be here soon. I've had conflicting reports of AR10's on the shelf at Armalite, and them having to build one (4-6 weeks).

Anybody know if this is possible? They look like they'll interchange, but without having one of each to try......
