This was the scariest holloween of my life.We had 3 piles of ductwork,Vav's [air controls],coils and sound antennuators on the roof covered with tarps.Leaving at the end of the day @ 1430 hrs. went to take a last look cause the word was 45-50 mile winds comin.Tarps are flappin and comin off. There was 3 of us running around with tie wire trying to secure the loads.Winds are screaming, can't even standup.I'm kneeling on the tarp trying to wire it to the pallet and it lifting me.Winds picking up more, then the freezing rain/hail.I use the ironworker flat sole type boot and can't hardly standup.Wind takes my legs out from under me spins me and drops me right on my left shoulder. So now it got to the point we have to cut the tarps free before the load goes and it's whipping us all to hell.We cut loose the tarps and grab the ductwork and put it under an existing run that was 5 ft. high with cement butments that made pockets. Now days all the pieces have sticky plastic on the end to keep it clean, but it doen't allow air to pass thru so trying to hang on to it was brutal. Now I can only use my right arm cause my left is fuked. My bro get's knocked flat on his back twice, and his back was screwed to begin with.We move all the material into those pockets, now the skids....holy $hit...I was really fukin scared worried they would lift and clock one of us.Took them to another corner piled them and the masonite.Chilled to the fukin bone, hands numb.Bricklayer left some copper flashing on the roof, not tied down.It took off and landed like a spear into the ground just missing some kid.We are at the Nothwestern Hospital campus right off the lake.I have worked in the wind before,I have hoisted in the wind.Once we were going to hoist some units but it was to windy to land on the roof so we unloaded them on the ground. As I took off the slings to one unit I held the hook from the ball with my fingers on the side and a gust of wind sent the ball straight up in the air.A crane ball with cable is alot of weight.I have never been in winds this high.Took over 30 min. to get out of the parking lot, traffic jammedup cause Lake Shore and Michigan Ave flooded.Took 2 hrs. to go about 35 miles home.Half of my town was without power and traffic lights.I'm on the south end and got lucky.Took some time to get the shower hot enough to get the chill out of my bones. An accident report was written up because of my fall.First accident report since I have been in the trade 26 yrs.As we always pray at the dinner table for our Veterans and our troops and all those in need.I thanked God for letting us come off that roof alive.Scariest day of my life, that's no S H I T.
