  1. Welcome to the site!
  2. IMO, ADM is hard to beat in the price:value ratio. I've used their Recon X one piece mount with QDs and it's been nothing but good. Reliable RTZ and the QD levers are easily adjustable for tension. Nothing wrong with the other two, mind you, you would have a quality mount regardless of what you chose. One you didn't mention is Bobro, they make a quality mount as well.
  3. First, welcome to the site. You say you don't want a long range rig, yet that's what it seems you're building with an 18 inch bull barrel. 308 AR. If you're looking for a 100-200 yd gun, have you thought of 300 Blackout - A .308 projectile on a necked up .223 case?
  4. Welcome to the site, BigT. Thanks for your continued service. While you've only got 12 in, start thinking about retirement NOW, particularly as it concerns your med records. VA is a bitch to deal with.
  5. If your budget is only $1000, and you have an 80% lower already, why are you going to switch to an Armalite-style lower? And do you have anybody lined to to do the machining and anodizing?
  6. Awesome! I found a 20 inch REPR yesterday for ~$3K. After I get it sorted out we'll have to compare groups. <cyber fist bump>

  8. This. Most kids live in the "here and now" and don't realize that there's life beyond childhood and school. As for what that guy did, it's a technique. Not the approved technique, but a technique just the same. My only criticism is that he waited much too long to act. I was always taught that one can start off strict and then ease up later, but that it was very hard to start off permissive and then try to crack down.
  9. Hi Neal, and welcome to the site. I've often heard it said that in Wisconsin, wintertime is the nicest 10 months of the year.
  10. This week in Sons of Goons, see Will and his crack(head) team of gunsmiths tackle their toughest assignment yet - making an AR15 fire a 30 caliber bullet! Hear Will say..."Red Jacket will be the first to take the awsome stopping power of a .308 winchester round found in the M14 and add it to the ergonomics of the .223 caliber AR15. Ain't nevuh bin dun befo' and it'll be a real gayme changuh." Hear Steph say..."What I think we need is a shoulder stock for a PPK, so we can market it to girls better." Hear Kris say..."Garsh, yew shore are purty, Miss Steph! Will, do da pointy end of duh bullet go forwards or backwards?" Hear Special Guest Star US Attorney General Eric Holder say..."I need 10 AKs for some Mexican...friends. And I need them by the end of the week. Don't worry about the BATFE, I got your back."
  11. Also in the same price range is the Bushmaster ORC .308. DPMS and Bushmaster (As well as Remington) are owned by the same parent company, The Freedom Group, so their products are nigh on identical, though I think that Bushmaster's come with CL barrels. For a little more money, you could purchase an AR10A/B Carbine from Armalite and you would have a fine rifle indeed. For ~$2500 or so, you could get a LaRue OBR or PredatAR, as well as an LMT MWS. It all comes down to what your wallet can stand.
  12. Welcome to the site!
  13. Since he's got an 80% lower already, perhaps the best course of action is to spend the $3-400 needed to complete it then put the rest toward a complete upper receiver assembly. Depending on what his needs are, he'd be a little over his $1000 total, but not by much.
  14. All I want from modern technology is a jet pack, powered armor (Woulda made ruck marches one HELL of a lot easier) and a phased plasma rifle in the 40 watt range.
  15. Awesome stuff, Bro. Grey Group are atop notch bunch of guys.
  16. According to their website, their barrels are button rifled with a proprietary button that puts a trapezoidal shape to the lands. They say it gives longer barrel life and better accuracy. Before ordering, you might want to give them a call and have the Switchblock deleted. If you're not going to use a suppressor, you might be able to save a little money.
  17. The Devil's in the details. Being a much smaller shop, Noveske doesn't produce as many rifles/uppers as a large company like Armalite. While it means that Noveske's are more expensive, it also means that more time was taken in building the rifle; I've never heard of anyone complaining about an out-of-spec Novske. I've used Noveske's in the past, and found them to be brilliantly built. As far as barrels go, Noveske uses a proprietary button to rifle their barrels which gives the lands a slightly different shape. Noveske says this shape increases the longevity and accuracy of their barrels. They also change out their buttons more frequently than most barrel makers, to ensure sharp, consistant grooving. Noveske also uses a different chamber spec, from what I've read it's between a standard chamber and a true match chamber. IMO, the Armalite SS barrel is very good, but the Noveske is better.
  18. Would you produce nothng but high end, never been seen before, game-changing rifles and hand guns?
  19. If the problem persists after the ammo change, then I would suspect the mag. Gen 1 mags were problematic at best. Gen 2 ironed out all of the problems
  20. Know why OK always has high winds? Cuz Kansas blows and Texas sucks. I'm kidding. I keed, I keed.
  21. I heard that, too. From what I gather, in 2010 Will and Steph lost their FFL due to losing several AKs. The BATFE allowed them to remain in business as long as someone else held the FFL, which was Vince. I would imagine they've found another sucker...er, I mean "Partner" that has an FFL.
  22. Welcome from SW OK.
  23. I don't find the recoil of a .308 AR to be that punishing, especially after "growing up" with bolt guns and the M14/M21/M1A. I'd recommend running the OEM buffer for a little while to get your own feel for the recoil. If it's a bit stout for you, simply use a heavier buffer and stiffer buffer spring vice the hydraulic buffer.
  24. At about the same price point, I'd also look at the LMT .308 MWS and the KAC SR25. For a little less than those two, take a look at the LaRue PredatAR .
