  1. I've never seen, in this forum, a comparison between a .308 BAR (Browning Automatic Rifle) and an 'AR-type' .308 rifle. I've heard marvelous things about the BAR, but the inability to find one anywhere at a reasonable price, and Browning's refusal to take advance orders, brought me to DPMS -- and here. What are your reliability tests? Initially, the chamber in my DPMS was too tight, and the factory guys fixed the issue, took them 2 weeks. It's been flawless ever since.
  2. Lots of farmers in this neck of the woods have massive propane (LP) tanks on account of they won't run natural gas pipelines out to them cuz it's just plain too far away. Thing about propane, is that it doesn't have as many BTUs per unit of gas that you get from 'natural gas'. So anything built to handle natgas will run, but not run as hot. Farmers around here have complained about that, but they get used to it eventually. It just takes longer to cook things. And I'm talking about ovens, stove-top burners, and furnaces. Now these farmer LP tanks are about 4/5 the length of a limousine, and about twice as tall as a casket. If I were a starving urbanite, crazed by hunger and driven by a need to find a warm, dry place to sleep, anyone with an LP tank in the front yard (where farmers put them) would be an instant target for conquest. Those LP tanks last a long time. The only upside to this is that, in this neck of the woods, everyone knows farmers have guns and even the kids know how to use them.
  3. I'm on about 40 acres here and 100 yards for shooting rifles is nearly no big deal. Lots of forest wants to be in the way, which takes a fair amount of upkeep, as trees, shrubs and brush crowd amongst each other to get sunlight.
  4. If that is Photoshopped, there is someone, somewhere, who has either too much money, or too much time.
  5. I got a Work Sharp Knife Sharpener for Christmas and it's one of my favorite power tools. Does an excellent job, and does it fast. They say it's even good for lawn mower blades, but I'd rather use my bench grinder for that.

Magwa, I have a creek running through the forest where I live, and that creek (they call it a 'crick' around here) has lots of crawfish (they call 'em 'crawdads' here). We have plenty of crawdads, but you'd have to hunt and grab those critters to make a meal. Like maybe a day, during summer, feeding two guys. Is it worth the effort? I ate some 'Cajun Crawfish' from a store here in Iowa and it tasted like tough, stringy red pepper. Are those critters worth the effort?
  7. LOL I was wondering which would be the best, I guess it's a tie? ^-^
  8. The way the medical community controls prescriptions for everything at all, looks like it's nearly impossible to establish a cache of meds for anything at all. Now I have heard of people getting penicillin antibiotics from pet stores, to help clean fish tanks of bacteria. Supposedly this antibiotic works for people, too -- but of course, the proper human dose is not given on the package. At the very least, they should offer sulfa over the counter. It's good stuff.
  9. Okay, so here's how some think it really happened: It came to pass one evening that Adam was walking in the Garden of Eden, and God looked down upon him, and said, "It is not good for the man to be alone." For Adam, unlike all the birds of the air, and the beasts of the field, had no mate. Therefore, God spoke to Adam, saying, "I shall make for you a woman, who will be completely faithful to you, and meet all of your needs, without complaint, for the rest of your life." Adam marveled at these words, and spoke to God, saying, "Surely something as wonderful as this shall cost me dearly." And God replied, saying, "Yea, verily, to have this woman will cost you an arm and a leg." Whereupon Adam grew fearful, and asked God, "What can I get for a rib?"
  10. Veteran Arrested And Charged For Legally Open Carrying AR-15 - Examiner - July 3, 2014 http://www.examiner.com/article/veteran-arrested-and-charged-for-legally-open-carrying-ar-15 Last Saturday, Mack Worley, eager to exercise his second amendment, open carried his rifle while grabbing a soda and viewing a fireworks stand before attempting to walk back to his car. Worley then noticed as many as seven police officers pointing their guns at him, demanding he remove his firearm. Police also ordered Worley to turn off his cell phone which was recording the incident which Worley refused.
  11. You could revise and expand your SHTF skills by only eating what you an find laying in the street, which will greatly reduce your trips to the grocery store. What's more, you could join the Freegans and learn basic skills of dumpster-diving from them. There are many ways to make sure that life's necessities, such as firearms, can be gathered. Edit: >:D Nobody who is sane would advocate the Freegan 'lifestyle' but without a smiley figure, well, the wrong conclusion could pop up.
  12. 'Staying put' is my SHTF plan. Part of that plan is for another family to join us. Another part of that plan -- I'm saving up cash for it -- is getting kerosene for lanterns, and the lanterns themselves. I've located a good supplier of kerosene lanterns, and already have one of their products. I'm looking to get 4 of these critters. Out here in the woods, we've often had to suffer extended electric power outages, including one that lasted a week and a half. We had the creek for water and bathing, the wood stove for heat and cooking, and the kerosene lantern for light. So the plan is to get 4 more of these lanterns, and a good bunch of gallons of kerosene to keep 'em running.
  13. Don't feel bad, brother. Just remember it as a Liberal screwed up 2x.
  14. Rust Oleum has a new product that just might fix that -- it's time to wait for reviews, but the RustOleum waterproofing spray could make lots of BO bags a lot nicer for what you have packed in there. They even show it on TV making boots waterproof. Could be an excellent addition to a BO bag, or during preparations for SHTF, or, heck, for anyone who wants to keep their feet dry.
  15. I have, and still have, someone who's the brother of my ex-wife, whatever sort of relation that's called, but it seems to make him a member of the family though I would like it better if he wasn't. He has two PhDs from Stanford, one in Computer Engineering, and the other in Robotics. Well, about 22 years ago, he gets convinced that the USA is about to collapse into mayhem, anarchy, starvation, people with 'bad' opinions shooting guns, etc. So his solution was to move himself and his French wife to Brazil, where he taught at a university. Well, then he found out about how the locals had a major local industry involving the kidnapping of white people from the US and collecting the ransom cashola. And also, he found out that Brazilian food was basically rice and red beans, which he didn't like. So he and his French wife move to France, where he taught PhD things. Well, he found out, like many people from the USA, that the French are really nasty people. He figured he could teach them if they were willing to listen, but they didn't, so it was a waste of time and the pay was crap. And then he figured, Western Europe will collapse into total anarchy, etc.. Fleeing the imminent collapse of Europe, about 17 years ago or so, they returned to the USA, where both of them are uber-Liberal progressive "post-modern deconstructionists who both teach at their local university. Between the two of them, and this was a good few years ago, they raked in about $180K annually in salaries. At a marriage event, I introduced this brother of my ex-wife to my real wife, and he objected to me doing that. "Names are arbitrary things, they are words without real meaning", he said. "We don't do that thing." Well so okay, long story short, he did an actual bugout -- twice. In the process, he became more leftist/liberal/progressive than he had ever been before. Even so, having done the bugout twice, he has no guns, no preparedness, nothing like that at all. With a French wife, though, he has of course a well-stocked wine cellar. His house is made of brick, and is very sturdy. Even so, when SHTF, looters who are tired from a long hard day of looting (suburb of Milwaukee) and want to relax and enjoy, will totally loot his house and empty the wine cellar. There's probably a lesson to be learned from this guy's worries and travels, but it isn't totally obvious.
  16. Waterloo boy myself. I keep hoping the Cedar Valley Militia does something, or the NRA sanctions a shooting event near here... no joy there. But the folks here are good folks.
  17. Chaser, welcome from Iowa! I like your approach to building a rifle. Me, I bought a complete DPMS and most of my struggles since then were with getting iron sights for it that I was willing to use. But that's a longer story for another day. Well, and I got a heavy buffer, and tossed a muzzle brake that I hoped would be fine, etc., and got a trigger set from Timney, though the Hiperfire looks better, should have gotten that, really, maybe... It goes on. I hope you enjoy your visits here, you'll find that people know their stuff.
  18. If you got a stockpile of ammo and MREs, and other things you can't completely put into a BOB, well, it could be that you're well-prepared at home and doing the "sit tight" is the best option. Although, if you're sitting on a ton of MREs and sitting tight, you'll possibly be burning up lots of your ammo stash. I personally live in a wooded area, where I can take deer any day of the week. Trouble is, I live near a metropolitan area, which is home to lots of hunters -- decent, polite guys who, during SHTF might not be friendly after all. And lots of others with guns, who will be hungry. So we're likely talking major efforts at controlling poachers here in this forest, along with gun-toting looters who have scoured the shelves of the grocery stores downtown. I have a good supply of .22, but I need to give some serious attention to other calibers -- a few .308, less than 1K, would not be enough for long. Like anything else in SHTF, the question is, how long a period of time do you need to prepare for. Maybe the smartest long-term investment is flints and steel for starting fires.
  19. The ability to both generate and cook with propane would be a good thing.

    Apology

Friends and others, I have been informed by a Moderator that I have insulted the staff and the community by agreeing with comments made by either greenmist or htbde -- both of whom were ejected from this forum. Apparently, this has led to some enduring anger on the part of those who need not be named. I offer my heartfelt apologies for my conduct in this regard, and if I have offended in any other way, please PM me. I will then apologize to you individually.
  21. LOL
  22. I've wondered about generators in a shtf situation. Likely, gasoline would become extremely precious. Maybe too precious to put in a generator? I can see stocking kerosene for kerosene lamps being a good idea. For either type of fuel, I guess the real question might be, how long will your supply have to last?
  23. You are not going to entice me into saying something back in anger. I have the impression that this forum has higher standards.
  24. Ok, I thought you were saying there were that many people carrying.
  25. 98Z5V, Isn't that a bit harsh? Nobody knows everything.
