If there's room in a nice vacant basement like some modern houses seem to have, why not take that money and build a gun room. Indirect lighting, La-Z-Boy recliner, nice gun racks, shag carpet, etc., and a double lock on a steel door. Man cave. Your investment with benefits.

I'm with DNP on this one. Basically all the kids in this neck of the woods grew up in a house where the shotgun leaned against the wall by the front door. Or somewhere handy like that. On the other hand, there are states where it's a crime to let them near guns. I guess it would be cynical to think that manufacturers of gun safes would push for laws like that.

Is the 'open carry' movement going too far?
gnatshooter replied to gnatshooter's topic in Firearm Industry News and Gossip
^^^this contact with law enforcement could have become far worse, really fast. This contact with the left-wing press went straight into the toilet, though even worse than what could have been predicted. Although, friend edgecrusher, some of what you say is what the NRA said about open carry of rifles, before Open Carry Texas threatened to withdraw its support of the NRA, and the NRA backed away. This is not an easy or simple issue, and deserves careful watching. With all this open carry of rifles going on, there's bound to be one event that winds up with the US Supreme Court. The case that makes it there could be righteous, or bad enough that we'll regret it for a century. The NRA being wishy-washy on rifle open carry helps nobody. They need to come out with a statement on open carry that's viable and workable, and publish something on open carry etiquette that law enforcement can live with. An armed society is a polite society, and -- we gotta admit -- we, the armed, need to show that we are polite. -
Good read on the current ammo shortage

Is the 'open carry' movement going too far?

63-year-old guy in Michigan gets busted for open carry of a rifle -- charges not filed, and rifle given back, though it seems he was talking about 'revolution' and cussed out the LEO. Response to his open carry was enormous. http://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/joseph-houseman-police-standoff -
As long as measurements are taken in a controlled environment with established conditions, you should get readings comparable to each other as long as the equipment is able to measure a difference. It appears to be known that different dB will be experienced, with different muzzle devices, depending on where you stand. So your suggestion that the meter be placed the same place for all measurements is well-taken.
-
That would be a great deal of fun. Having looked at a number of different efforts to quantify the differences between various muzzle brakes based on the concussion delivered to the shooter and bystanders, I've found that dB meters designed to measure ambient noise are unable to find a difference between rifle shots, even though bystanders find the difference to be quite obvious. It takes expensive equipment to measure transient decibels -- basically, shock waves. I don't have that equipment. Thanks for your excellent idea. Maybe a hefty donation, along with recommendations of equipment vendors, would help you get what you are looking for.

I'm still trying to piece together an accurate picture of what tubeguns and spaceguns actually are, and whether there is actually a difference between them to make them two different types of rifles. Depending on where you go on the 'net, you can find definitions that are merely cosmetic, to some that are highly functional. There does seem to be a bias in favor of considering tube/spaceguns as those rifles where the the forearm is a seamless part of the receiver. Even so, there are others who consider skeleton buttstocks and tall iron sights to be the deciding factor. Certainly the sights involved would affect which types of competition are allowed for the rifle. Someone here might be able to explain the tubegun/spacegun thing.

Brass damage
gnatshooter replied to gnatshooter's topic in DPMS LR-308 General, Technical Discussion
Well, here's the deal, on the strength of advice here, I took my once-fired .308 brass over to a local LGS, which is a very small chain, where they have a guy on staff who reloads, and I gave it away as a good-will gesture. I also said that they should advertise taking once-fired brass as a donation, with proceeds to Wounded Warriors. And that people who donated brass would stick around and buy something. The guy seemed impressed with the idea. But he also seemed to be unimpressed because it was not his idea. Oh well. I already got my fun outta that brass. -
Friends, I had an excellent Fathers Day weekend. My son bought two boxes of .308 to fire in my DPMS LR-308T, and we shot em all up. It was a windy day, so we shot down by the creek, on account of there is less wind down there. My son had a blast (pun) with the DPMS and compared it to the 7mm08 that he's used to for hunting bears. He liked the recoil from the DPMS (with Slash's heavy buffer) and said that he could feel that heavy buffer doing its job. It seems he might become an AR-type convert. I'm trying to talk him into a build-from-scratch approach, and told him that you guys (and gals) would be willing to help. One thing that I noticed during this ammo-burning exercise is that my arms aren't as steady as they were, back in the day. When I used an air rifle offhand to punch nickel-sized groups at 40 yards. This was back when I tossed around hay bales all summer, even though I was basically a skinny guy. I'm wondering, are there special exercises a guy can do to help him hold still with offhand shooting? One discussion group mentioned that there was an actual book on the topic, but the link was busted. Oh, and here is a pic of me, my son, and my mildly-modded LR-308 on an actual Fathers Day event. The point of these laws/regulations is to ensure that the gun is not easily accessible. So no, you'd want your stuff (it looks like a van?) in with the spare tire and jack or something like that. Speaking of the spare tire and jack, there's no explicit law against keeping the lug wrench within easy reach.
-
I can see this being popular with the tubegun/spacegun folks.
-
When the device was designed to handle recoil and that feature is its claim to fame, that approach makes the most sense. dB measurements would be the icing on the cake.
-
Will you be doing noise comparisons "by ear" or measuring dBs with a meter? I've heard that some meters are not good a measuring transient sounds, such as rifle bangs.

Best Buttstock for Butt Stroking????
gnatshooter replied to jtallen83's topic in Tactics and Training
Upon looking at the buttstock on my DPMS LR-308, I have to wonder about the strength of how the buttstock is attached to the lower receiver. Seems to me that no matter how strong your buttstock might be, you'd do irreversible damage to the receiver where it joins the buttstock, when swinging it against, i.e., heads. Any historians here? Was the original AR-15 battle rifle designed for double duty as a club? Earlier military rifles were. -
Brass damage

Friends, I am running a DPMS LR-308T and recently switched from the smooth-sided high-profile receiver to the low-profile receiver with forward assist. On the forward-facing side of the forward-assist housing, I am getting an accumulation of "brass dust" while shooting. It comes off easily with just a finger rub. At the same time, I am getting dents like this on all my spent brass. Click on the pic for a larger version: In the picture, the dent is the area on the shoulder, slightly on the left side of the picture, that looks like an inverted teardrop, or triangle. It's not a deep dent, but can easily be both seen and felt with a finger. First off, does this mean my rifle is overgassed, or something like that? I'm thinking the spent brass is hitting the forward assist housing on the way out, but it runs flawlessly. Second, is this spent brass reloadable, or is it toast?

Very well. Please accept my apology.

Okay, this is a video instead. And I'm pretty sure it's a girl shooting -- the backs of the ears look really female. http://www.how-to-diy.org/gm9nmFiXl1Fo-B/my-AR-15-vs-milk-jugs.html

St. Louis police department to auction off Tommy guns - Fox News/St. Louis - June 10, 2014 http://fox2now.com/2014/06/10/st-louis-police-department-to-auction-off-tommy-guns/ [excerpts] St. Louis City Police are auctioning off a series 29 of 1920's era Tommy guns. The guns valued at over $750,000 are stored in a police vault; they are also part of one of the largest Thompson submachine gun caches in the country. 'The duty weapons that our officers carry have reached the end of their useful life; we need to buy new weapons for our officers. Budgets are tight and we had to be creative.’ said Dotson The guns are a perfect buy for collectors, but getting your hands on one won’t be easy. Buyers must obtain a Federal Firearms License before bidding. Gun prices can range from $15,000 to $40,000. At this point no sale date has been set, but officials say the guns will go on sale sometime within the next year.
