  1. At last, this is not a AR-15 but a bigger brother, AR-10 platform. This is a Ruger SR-762 in 762 X 51 or .308. Currently with a Nikon M-308 scope with a Harris Bi-Pod. With a full 20 round magazine it weighs in at 11 3/4 pounds, not exactly a rifle you would want to carry around all day but it is great out to 500 to 1000 yards !
  2. Hello from Grand Forks, ie, Grand Forks Rifle Club. Yes winter is coming though we are still having fall weather for now.
  3. I think they should go back to the old ways. Back in Vie Nam in the mid-1960's when we were issued some of the first M-16's in Viet Nam one of out guys got a hold of a bunch of stickers that we put on our weapons, ie, Made By Matel with a picture of Matty Matel on them !
  4. Having carried a M-16 in Viet Nam I was always impressed with the utility of the weapon system but I never had much use for the little .223 round. After retiring from the military and the University of North Dakota I was looking for a new rifel. I looked at many models from a New Winchester model 1866 Delux Take Down rifle through a Browing X-Bolt with a beautiful maple stock. I finally settled on the new (at the time) Ruger SR-762. It has enouth long range punch for distance target shooting or hunting though not nearly as good looking as the Browning and a bit pricy, however with the double piston design it stays much cleaner and cooler (I really got tired of scraping down and cleaning the old M-16 especially in the early days of ball powder). The early M-16 had its problems though mainy due to poor dicesion making by military higher ups but the basic design was solid and comfortable.
  5. Evening. I carried a M-16 in Nam in 65 and again in 69-70 and our early M-16's did not have the forward assist and I never missed it. My Ruger SR-762 does have the forward assist and I've never used it. I look on it just like the spare tire in my Expedition, It's there and if needed it's a great idea but (knock on wood) I have so far never used it !
  6. I tend to agree with you, for over fifty years of shooting I was always of the opinion that longer was better. However, with my purchase of a Ruger SR-762 with a 16.12" barrel and several studies I have read I am now of the opinion that a 18-20" barrel would probably be optimum for the .308 though I am stuck with the shorter barrel on my Ruger since barrel replacement would void the warranty and no one makes a longer barrel that will fit my baby !!!
  7. Tell me about it !!! After Viet Nam, 24 years in the military and over 70 years old you would think that, Expidition, Harley, Mine Lab Metal Detector, Cannon Camera and now the SR-762, would be enough.. When will it end ?????????????? ... ;)
  8. Well that's the weather in Fargo, we only have about 1/4 of snow in Grand Forks with a -24 deg wind chill .
  9. As do I but I live in Grand Forks so it's only a couple mile drive for me. Though I was born and raised in Duluth until I joined the military over 50 years ago than retired in Grand Forks where I worked at several jobs including 17 years at UND. Hope to see you out at the range.
  10. 2007 Harley FXDF, Dyna Fat Bob , the money pit, it keeps wanting all the extras, ie, engine guard, bags, rack, windshield, better seat, etc. I have it tied up out in the garage to keep it from rooting in the grass..................... ;)

    Ruger SR-762

Afternoon. I've had a SR-762 for nearly a year now and it is a great gun though I do wish they would offer a longer barrel for it. It is quite surprising what you can do with a 16" barrel and Hornady 168 grain BTHP Match bullets way out to 600 yards (that's as long as they have at the rifle range I shoot at. Ruger made a excellent weapon eventhough there are many people with Black Rifle Fobia !! And it was mentioned that it was light ? With a Harris bi-pod, Nikon M-308 scope, Viking sling, and a full 20 round mag, my rifle weighs in at 11 3/4 pounds, not exactly a light rifle !!
  12. As a retired Msgt and Viet Nam Vet, I carried a M-16 in Nam and was not very impressed in the weapon or the .223 cartridge, though it was in its early days in 1965. Then I carried a bolt action Remington 700 BDL, 30-06 but got kind of tired of the sore and bruised sholder while wearing "t" shirts, my Remington had a solid but plate. My son built his own .223 AR-15. While trying to purchase a new Winchester 1886, 45.70 with a 26" octogen barrel (at around 12 pounds) but I was just a little late, it was sold to another bidder. I had been reading about the piston driven Ruger SR-762 and thought it was very interesting. The AR platform is extremely ergonomic and since it was chambered in the Winchester .308 cartridge, which is very available, and with some of the hotter loads has velocities approaching thperformance of the 30-06 with out the recoil and even had better accuracy I bought one. I am very satisfied with the weapon, even the higher price. Of course, like my Harley, it can tend to be a money pit with all the accessories involved
  13. Great gun, I love mine ! Carried a M-16 in Viet Nahm and don't have a lot of use for the .223 round. The .308 is a outstanding catridge, I used to carry a Remington 700 BDL in 30-06 but after a while, especially when wearing a "T" shirt, it had the original bakeite recoil pad, and I had many bruised sholders.
  14. Evening. I agree with you ! I have had a Ruger SR-762 for several months and its great. I put a Nikon 4-16 X 42mm scope with Bullet Drop Compensator on it, a Harris Bipod, and a Buffer Technology Hydraulic Recoil Buffer. Now I guess the next this is a Geissele, Super Semi Automatic Enhanced Trigger, and possibly later a Magpul UBR stock, boy these toys can get expensive (almost as bad as my Harley !).
