Thanks for that!

A few days ago we had snow, actually the 3rd small snowstorm but it was starting to accumulate so I decided to plow it. Backing up a bit... When we started to get snow the ground still wasn't frozen. If I plow on unfrozen ground the snowplow will tear up the lawn and make one heck of a mess. So I didn't plow the 1st 2 storms. But we'd had some cold weather and I had my fingers crossed that it was frozen. Some places were and some weren't. Yeah, I made a mess that'll need to get fixed in the spring. Then we got a few inches of warm rain and most of the snow is gone. Now it's been cold for the last few days and the ground has to be frozen by now! No snow in the foreseeable forecast. But it'll get here again eventually. Shooting is definitely done until spring.

FWIW, it can be that easy, if one only considers oneself and not others. There could be children and what happens with them? The right solution in that case could be making the childs room the safe room. In my case there is no way that I'll allow a home invader to get close enough to enter my doorway. Distance is my friend and the home invaders enemy. So I will inform the invaders that entering the hallway means I shoot. That's a 13 1/2 pace shot, approx' 40', from my place behind cover. That should give me plenty of time to make sure the perp is properly ventilated and that he has plenty of time for the trauma to take effect since not every shot is immediately effective. No, the doorway to our bedroom is WAYYYY too close. But everyone has their thoughts on what is right for them and that's the way it should be.

Nice looking roast! Great minds think alike. I made a 2 1/2" thick cut bone in rib eye Sous Vide for Thanksgiving dinner. I asked the wife what she wanted with it and she told me cauliflower "potato salad". That was fine with me cause I'm in ketosis and can't eat starch. Well, I can eat starch but I can't eat it and stay in ketosis and I definitely want to stay in ketosis (6 1/2 years now).

Maine's pretty big for an eastern US state so we can get different weather in different parts of the state. But we got the same snowstorm as your buddy got, but I'm of an age where no snow is nice snow. In the past the cold and snow didn't bother me. But today? I can do without it. It's something I tolerate for our spring, summer, and fall seasons. Anyway, it started as rain, then the snow started to mix in and changed to all snow for the night, very heavy wet snow. Maine is 90% wooded and the power lines are in the air when the tree limbs weighted down they touch the high tension lines. Early on we lost power twice for a second each time as fuses (I assume) burned out and the power got rerouted. Then at 10:30ish we lost it for good. But I have a PV solar elec' system and switched over to battery back up. The next day was sunny and the batteries were back up to 99% capacity at dusk. I tried to tie into our utility power and sometime during the day our power had been restored. But the snow is still with us. Thankfully we only got 6" that's close to 3" now due to settling and melting. I did my best to pack it down with the truck tires. Next time it snows the ground should be frozen and I'll be able to plow without plowing up the lawn. 🙂 My wife hopes for snow and I hope for rain in the winter. I don't need to plow rain. Last year I plowed 2 or 3 times and one of those was just out of winter boredom. I'm hoping for another winter like that this year.

That cold is headed our way in a few days.

ARRRGH! I wanted to get to the range to better test the new barrel even though my eyes are the weak link in the shooting "system". But when the conditions were "right" I had scheduling conflicts, or we had typical autumn weather, meaning too much wind. Now it's too cold and our snow season has arrived and I freely admit that nowadays I'm just a wuss and don't want to endure the cold that I would have tolerated even a decade ago. The public range remains open all year, but the club I belong to has probably closed the 300 yard range that's down a steep drive. But all isn't lost. I'm going to press my eye Dr to get my cataracts fixed before springtime. I also converted the rifle into a sort of bastardized target version with the 5-25x scope and buttstock but with the ULW barrel in place since precision shooting is just easier with those add-ons. I want to see what the barrel will do and not what I can tolerate to get good accuracy.

Update: It appears that the seeds I planted have started to sprout. I suggested one way to set up a safe room (note: NOT a panic room a safe room is much different) with super bright lights to set up a "wall" of light that the protector with firearm gets behind (also behind cover). Remember the old flash bulb flash photography? Now think instead of a flash, continuous light. Anyway, the week of Veterans Day a manufacturer of such lights had a sale and he bought 2. One with 16k lumens of output and another with 8k both lights have wide angle flood type beams. Perfect. He mentioned that next on the list were firearms. Also mentioned that he's reading Clive Cussler (?) novels and now he knows what a bullpup and other terms he runs across mean.

Last 2 days have been cold, heavy winds, with lotsa rain. We could use it to get us out of our drought (Maine). It helped but it's not all we need to recharge the aquifer. We don't have a water problem, Maine would need to turn into the Sahara for that to be an issue for us, but others with marginal shallow wells can have problems. Today is overcast with even heavier winds.

It was painful to watch the guy try to get the rifle into it's case. Tulsi G is all full of surprises. So why the H was she EVER a democrat!!??? Clearly the confusion has left her.

Since we basically have no information all we can do is take blind shots. When mounted is the can in alignment with the bore? Basically, was the barrel threaded to make that happen? How is the can held onto the barrel? If it's with an adapter was the adapter removed from anything else and the threads not dressed to clean them up before reuse? That has been known to produce misalignment.

I did the same thing but in the orderly room, others were present. I asked this dickhead CO for permission to speak then told him off. He was just punching his command ticket from what I observed over time and he was just horrible. When he told me to shut up I did. I didn't care; I was getting out. Too many like that in a unit that could be delivered anywhere on the planet in 24 hours.

PLEASE, GOD!!! Let this happen...

I'd rather just do away with the ATF, the registry, tax stamps, and the illegal list of gun owners they keep (after they were told not to). -
So if I tell a group leader to fuk off that isn't the sort of validation they want? Too bad, fuk 'em.

I hear that unanimously from everyone who had it done. Armed Eye Doc, I think I can convince her to allow it if I tell her that it's interfering with my life. Which it is. It also softens the vision and I have a hard time with road signs and such. I'm also an amateur astronomer and live where I do because of the dark skies. But unless it's a very bright object I can't see it naked eye.

So where am I with this rimfire PRS? I'll start by stating that aging sux. There was a time when I was superman (or so I thought) and indestructible. That was over half a century ago. Things have changed. The first to go was the eyes. I've worn glasses since the 3rd grade, but at 40ish I realized that I required optics on my firearms for any meaningful accuracy work. But what about PRS? I was shooting the KIDD at 50 yards and that target butt is shaded. No issues. But the 100 yard target is in direct sunlight. My scope is bright and something was going on with my vision. I noticed it at first with shooting steel challenge. My left eye wanted to take over for the right eye, and that doesn't work. So I closed it, the right eye did it's thing and that did work. But until I figured that out I had issues. But back to PRS at 100 yards. Really funky stuff going on with the right eye behind the scope. I went to my eye Dr and she told me that I have cataracts in both eyes. Yeah, lucky me. But she also told me that it wasn't bad enough to require surgery just then. But in the meantime I'm deadlined as far as shooting PRS if it's sunny. Next time I see the Dr I'm going to push to correct the cataracts.

So I took my Dr and his wife to the range today. We had the place to ourselves. It was a familiarization session with some of the firearms I suggested for them , basic safety, yada, yada. She had never encountered ANY firearms. He shot .22s as a child, went away for a time and his parents sold all of the firearms, they were gone when he got back, nothing since then, my guess is that he's at least 40 maybe older. We met at a LGS so that they could fondle some shotguns. Then bought some 9mm ammo. Started them out with handguns to show them why something shouldered fired would be better for their use. He understood pretty quickly, she turned out to be Annie Oakley. So much so that I realized I had met my first person in shooting with natural talent. Then we moved on to a sub2000 Gen 2, he loved it. She's slight and smaller than I am and had issues with the stock. Anyone who has seen a child shooting a rifle with an adult stock knows the problem. Had the same issue with the GHM9. So he liked the PCCs and she loved the handguns. She commented that she didn't know how much fun it was going to be. I think I made 2 new shooters. Time well spent. She asked how much it costs for a membership to the club. He was impressed by the facilities. At least now they have some information to work with to make a better informed decision for their purchases. Oh, and I got clear indications that they voted "correctly". But politics wasn't on the agenda.

A red dot is a must. He already knows that. He and his wife aren't gun people so I'm trying to make the choice as bullet proof as possible. So yes, definitely a red dot. Maybe BUIS. Haven't crossed that bridge yet but I mentioned BUIS. Already alerted him to the Sub2k. I shot one in competition; super reliable, lightweight, plenty accurate. Mine is retired now but only because they are a bitch to clean as I like to clean a weapon (ex military). So I moved to a B&T GHM9 SBR (gen 1) which is easy to clean. And the short barrel is great around barricades and walls. I also suggested the GHM9 and the APC9 (?) to him for higher end firearms, arm braced of course. When we go to the range I will bring my KS7 and light bird shot to familiarize them with a shotgun set up for HD. But I don't think they'll want a shotgun. He immediately liked the idea of a PCC when I suggested it over a handgun that the LGS suggested. Heck, they suggested a small 9mm handgun for someone that doesn't know how to use ANY handgun. I also suggested an arm braced RONI and Mechtech conversions if he thought he might want a handgun at some point. Use it mounted in the frame and remove it as needed. I didn't think of the 9mm AR. I've only been suggesting firearms that I know to be reliable. I know nothing about AR 9mms and I've never seen one in use in competition. Are they reliable? I have firearms for them to lay hands on and fire for familiarization. At some point we'll head to a range.
-
I forgot about short shells because my KS-7 won't run them reliably. But yes, minimal recoil. Thanks!
-
Yeah, a 12 gauge is out. They aren't gun folks and I'd never suggest anything with much recoil for them. Plus they are slow to load and pellets spread and I don't know their home. I did suggest the Keltec KSG .410. But HD ammo is >$1 per and cost is a factor. Sure practice can be done with birdshot but the real stuff needs to be fired to insure reliability. To me that means firing a mess of the good stuff. For them (and most wanting a HD firearm) a 9mm PCC is right. Mag size, ammo availability, accuracy, the list goes on and on. I'm still flummoxed that the LGS showed him nothing but handguns when he told them he wanted something for home HD. I know those folks and they should know better. Heck, they do know better. I want to get them to the range so that they can handle and shoot some of the firearms I'm suggesting for them. The Dr wants to do that too.
-
Thanks. The price is right and I'm pushing for him to get 2, whatever he decides to get, one for his wife.
-
Thanks. Extar EP9 was one of the first I suggested for him just from the reviews. No problems with it? How many rounds through yours?
-
The LGS suggested a handgun (why do they do that!!????). It's HD and not CCW... set up a safe room, hold the defensive position and wait for the cops. I suggested a PCC over a shotgun or handgun. In the past few months I've given him other suggestions but all are not handguns unless mounted in a housing that turns it into a PCC. Another was the KelTec .410 KSG with slugs. If he was considering clearing his own home (very bad move IMO, but macho) a handgun might be an option. But at this time that's not the case and a PCC set up properly is just as good for CQB for house clearing in a SHTF scenario as a handgun (maybe better) for an untrained person IMO. There were so many suggestions that there's no way I can remember all that I gave him. Quite a few I have on hand for him and his wife to try and that's yet to happen. Ideally I'd like a reliable 9mm bullpup but that doesn't exist, at least from the reviews I've seen. So what are your PCC choices? What are your HD choices? Don't include handguns that's a non starter for his wifes and his proficiency. His idea is a safe room with an easy to aim and get hits WITHOUT the handgun training and maintenance for proficiency required by a handgun. Again in general I suggested a PCC with a red dot and a laser/flashlight (more tactics that I'm not going to write out). What firearms would you suggest in that general category that I've outlined? I can't be everywhere so I need the knowledge of the members. Again, a handgun, unless it's in a rifle/PCC housing is a non starter.

Well, it took over a month as compared to our statistical norm, but we finally had a killing frost. Most times our first is in early to mid Sept'. Hopefully the winter will be just as mild (not a chance!). The last few days have been in the 50s and 60s. And there is a definite fall bite to the air. My favorite time of the year.

Regarding the 100 yard target above... I saw my eye Dr and she told me that I have cataracts that soften my vision. So the vision problems that I was having were at least partially mine. Maybe made worse by the very bright scope? IDK. But I do know that I was told my eyes aren't bad enough yet to get them fixed. Bummer. Next year I'm going to push for the surgery. It's affecting my shooting. Ever since I sold my one field rifle, a 50 year old FN Browning T-Bolt, I've missed not having a field rifle. But when I set up the KIDD I did it right. Why? Because the Supergrade is designed to with a quick and easy change barrel. The KIDD Tac' Chassis has a buffer tube for quick change buttstocks. As pictured far above it weighs >12#. Way too heavy to be a field rifle or for offhand shooting IMO (I did try). So I got one of KIDDs ULW barrels for it. I already had everything else required. The field rifle version with swapped out parts below. The field rifle weighs 6# 8.5ozs with the MFT Minimalist buttstock (VLTOR buttstock seen below). The barrel is said to be just as precise as the heavy barrel and appears to be so in my very limited shooting of it thus far. Of course it's missing the target shooting amenities that help make the target configuration so easy to shoot. I've already tested return to zero and it does. It was stated by other SG owners that changing barrels resulted in no POI shift. I didn't see how that could be and it isn't precisely the same. changing barrels and keeping the same scope on it resulted in about a one inch shift. Not too bad but not a zero shift. I can't see a time when I'd ever want the big scope on the field rifle or the 3-9x scope on the target rifle. So no big deal, just dedicate each scope to the correct barrel. Time to convert from one use to the other? I was in no hurry and had to chase down tools I forgot that I'd need and I did it in 5 1/2 minutes. To help facilitate the parts swap the field scope wears lever type QD mounts, but the 5-25x wears a mount that uses TORX screws at 30 in/lbs. No way around that mount IMO.
