Any experience with nissan xterra?

Wife hit a javolina and killed her little rav4. It had 260k on it and was still going strong. We liked it but those things are too Damn expensive to buy another and we need a replacement vehicle asap. I have about $5500 and don't want to finance anything. Been looking at xterras from 02/3/4. 2x and 4x. Generally between 100k and 130k miles.

Any opinions? These look to be pretty reliable and that's my main concern. Just want something with room for the kids and stuff that I can take out camping or on trips, and still be a decent daily. Don't plan on modding it at all. Any major differences in reliability between 2/4x4? Any major reliability concerns outside of basic maintenence? Common failure points? Also willing to hear suggestions for a used suv in that price range. There seem to be a lot of Isuzu rodeos and cherokees for sale here as well in similar condition. I'd love a 4runner but anything with a Toyota badge is priced like it's made of solid gold around here. TIA.

From a friend: well up until 2010 the autos had and issue that needs to be fixed, basically they got coolant in the trans. The motor is solid, frame is great, interior is bland, going to get around 18mpg, pulls like 5500 pounds, I honestly really liked mine.

im pretty sure his is a manual but I maybe wrong

I know about the trans issue. Nissan does as well and won't fix it for whatever reason. Also affects the pathfinder, and probably the whole lineup of SUVs. the oil cooler is built into the radiator, and they can leak coolant into the trans which nukes it almost instantly. Really bad design, but easy fix with a bypass or an aftermarket cooler. My pathy is bypassed at the moment since its winter and I'm only driving back and forth to work.

Well, I didn't get my xterra :( Looked at a few, but they were either questionable condition or well over blue book. Wife was pushing towards the mini van and I had to flank her. Ended up with a 04 outback. Thing is pretty nice. 6 Cylinder is silky. Tons of room but drives like a car. Took her out to the desert to shoot today and she did just fine in the dirt. I christen thee GUNBOAT!

we're on our third, suberu and I really like them. She starred out with leasing a base line Impreza which was nice but I'm 6'2" 230# and I've drove a truck all my life, this felt like I was sitting 2" off the road and was uncomfortable for me. Next she leased a cross trek, that thing was an f'n tank. The day she brought it home she won a kerige coffee maker and it was a blizzard out but we wanted to try the coffee maker. We drove to the store in it and I handled the snow better than my Silverado. And I also took it to toms supper secret desert local. Also very comfy put 4000 miles on it last spring on our road trip. She just bought for the first time a cross trek.

I have an impreza wagon, so I'm already a fan. I would have liked something newer, but I was dead set against financing anything. This guy is really clean and came in under budget so I can pull my little pathfinder off the road now and start replacing broken stuff. To be honest, I think this thing will be much better for its intended purpose than the xterra would have been. Its awesome on the highway. Super comfy. The kids are stoked they have their own sunroof lol.

When we lived in Colorado we had several Subarus.  Never put less than 250K miles on any of them.  The only repair we ever had was the timing belt, which seems to be the weak point of the boxer engine.  All were still running fine when we traded them in.

when we were there this summer they were EVERY WHERE!! I guess the dealership in Denver sells the most in the nation. Atleast it's a belt and not a chain. knew of a few motorcycle models with chain issues, if it went it grenaded the motor
