bdavison78613
ok so I am new and apologize if this has been discussed. I am starting a build and wanting to know if I can use a LaRue barrel with a Mega Maten upper/lower set? Other barrels I have thought about are Noveske but not sure I want a 16 inch barrel or possible rainier 308 ultramatch.
Fletch
I am not 100% sure but I believe those PredatOBR barrels that LaRue offers in 7.62 can only be used with their PredatOBR rifles.

D.R.D.
I don't even think you can buy a LaRue barrel on its own. I think they only sell the rifle as a whole. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. You can however, buy a barrel that is extremely similar to the barrel LaRue originally used before they started making their own. They were made by Lothar-Walther, and called the "Var-Tac" series of barrels. LW-50 steel, 1:10 twist, Rifle length gas system. I think they are available in 16", 18" & 20" versions and come with a matched nickel boron bolt for around $450. They will surely fit in a Maten upper (From the Mega website: " Designed to accept any AR style .308 barrels and bolts*. This means you can use your AR10/Noveske or SR25/DPMS components"

D.R.D.
Ah, got it. Yes, that definitely looks like a proprietary mounting system. So, no bdavison78613 it doesn't look like an OBR barrel will work in a Maten receiver. Go for a Lothar-Walther or Criterion.

I have one and it is easily capable of 3/4" groups with Federal GMM 168 grain factory ammo...probably even better if you took me out of the equation. I did shoot a sub 1/2" group with it but I'm thinking that was a bit of luck on my part. Also, have you considered JP Rifles? They have a 16" (mid-length gas) that comes with one of their High Pressure Enhanced Bolts which is matched/headspaced to the barrel. I almost bought one but the price was a bit steep for me. I think it's like $600 (+$50 if you want it coated black). Edited July 20, 2016 by Fletch
bdavison78613
no not against a Mega barrel just looking for the most accurate I can get for around 500-600. I cannot seem to find a range report site for 308ARs. I have plans to build another with an aero precision upper/lower with a ballistic advantage barrel just to try them out, they guarantee sub moa and for a really really good price but there again no actual range report on them. any and all advice would be appreciated
survivalshop
All three of my Criterion Barrels shoot sub MOA , 16",18" & the 20" HB will shoot better then that .

I think what you're going to find is that there are a handful of companies that offer what you seek...is Lothar-Walther better than Criterion? is Criterion better than JP? Is JP better than (whoever)? Etc. If you're looking for sub-MOA all of those (and some others) are good to go...if you're looking for "most accurate" I think you're going to have to take a chance and pick one...if you're happy with it, keep it, if not sell it and try another. I don't see that question as definitively answerable beforehand by anyone. For me, my choice ended up being between Mega, JP, and Criterion...all of which I felt would be very accurate based on what I read...the price steered me away from JP, and the Criterion was out of stock, so I went with the Mega. But my criteria was probably different from yours...I just wanted 16", mid-gas, black, and MOA or better...and for me the Mega has exceeded my expectations. If I had to guess I would say the Mega is not likely to be as accurate (on average) than some of those other choices and by no means am I trying to push the Mega barrel...just trying to illustrate one way of looking at the choices out there. I've used LaRue for 556, and they make a great barrel for sure; but as already discovered, you cannot use their 308 barrel for a custom build.
