An aluminum hulled boat, designed as a transport.

In the Navy while on the USS JFK CV-67, I was amazed at the ship's construction.  All that steel looked pretty thin, supports at 3/16" to 1/4"...until I had to drill some of that hardened armor plated crap with an electric hand drill.

Then I toured the USS Iowa and thought "Wow, my ship is built like a cardboard box."

Then I got a guided tour on a USNS cargo vessel.  I thought "This thing is built all kinds of flimsy."

Fast forward to a couple of years ago and I went on my first Carnival Cruise.  I thought "This thing is made of glued tissue paper and going to rip open!"

The USS Stark was a combat frigate, made of aluminum.  It isn't the most durable, even when built for combat.

Maybe nothing.  The Stark incident prompted a total redesign of aluminum combat ships, due to the way it burned when hit by that explosive laden zodiac.

Not the USS Stark.  Duh!  The USS Cole bombing incident is what I was thinking about.

First photo is the USS Stark, the 2nd and 3rd are the USS Cole.

Those ships like the USS Cole have an Aluminum super structure , but have steel Hulls . I was on the USS MacDonough DLG 8 & it was the same way .

Now the USS Strong  DD 758 I was on, was the Last ( Destroyer ) to see combat in WWII & still in commission , now that thing was all steel ,but paper thin from so much use from scrapping all the rust off & repainting , which was probably the only thing keeping it together :laffs:

The way that Missile tracked , I think it was an antiship Missile which would do a great deal of damage to an all Aluminum Ship . I used to watch them test the SA Missiles on the DLG & they tracked similar to that , they almost looked like they were crazy , till they locked on , & then they would track the target , no matter what it did .  It still could have been a TOW type , as I said , just hit something stored on board . I thought that ship was converted to a ferry ?

Thats a Cruse Missile , certainly large enough war head to make that kind of impressive hit & damage & I'll take bet's , people died in that ship , unless it was a drone ship .

Yup - and the range it has, puts all of the Hormuz in question...

Let the bastards sink an oil tanker.

I'd like to think that would be a yuge boost for domestic energy production but it would depend on the next POTUS.
