Generator install today

I've been running on a 12,500 Westinghouse and a 50 amp pigtail into the breaker box.  It powers the whole house, no problem, aside from central air.  Hurricane season is when we need it most, and you definitely need a/c in those months.

 

So today there's a crew putting in a 22kw Generac.  We'll be glad to have this, and just in case we lose power and that won't run, I'm still going to be able to rely on the Westinghouse if need be - triple redundancy!

Your generac was most likely made down the road from me. 
 

my parents got one 3-4 years ago. Dad hasn’t said much about it so I guess no news is good news.

My sister had a Generac put in about 2 years ago. It comes on every Monday morning for about 10 minutes. 2 weeks ago it didn't come on. opened the enclosure and the bottom was covered in oil. Under warranty but they are sure dragging their feet about getting it back up running.

We have a little Westinghouse inverted iGen 2800 generator that was an absolute godsend after Hurricane Helene hit here in 2024.  Lost grid power for 11 days.  The little Westinghouse runs like a champ and kept the freezer and the refrigerator going with a bit to spare.  I think I picked that generator up for under $400 on sale at Sam's on an impulse buy.  I typically have $1000s of game meat and fish in the freezer.  I give Westinghouse 2 thumbs up on their generators.

With tornado ally pushing more north to my back yard and the crazy storms I should really look into one. What kinda wattage are you getting for a fridge and freezer with alittle to spare? 
 

I was looking at generac portables Atound Christmas of 2019, thought hmmmm maybe I should get one, maybe I will with my tax return. Well we all know what happened in 2020 and they alll vanished

The nice thing about keeping the freezer and fridge going off your generator is you only need to run the generator and hour or so a few times a day. as long as you keep the doors on the fridge closed mostly. No need to keep the generator running 24/7. Usually anything above 2KW will handle the freezer and fridge.
