So what are my options for railed free float tubes? DPMS 308 AP4

Recommended Posts

I have a Midwest Industries 15 inch Gen 2 SS free float tube, with top rail, and railed sections on my 5.56 AR, and love it. Unfortunately, as of right now, MI doesn't make any 308 free float tubes, or a barrel nut that will work with the Gen 2 SS tube (as far as I know)

Is a standard AR15 thread barrel nut the same as a DPMS 308?

Anyway, what are my options for a free float tube, with a top rail? Ideally, I'd like something 10 inches or longer. I know Troy makes some stuff, but haven't really heard anything good about them...

Going through exactly what you are asking right now.  No, the ar15 uses a different thread pitch than the dpms.

If you could find a barrel nut for that handguard, i'd be all over it  lol

JP has some options, in various lengths.  Apex has a couple.  Daniel Defense has a couple ff tubes.  SWS (superior weapons systems).  And i havent researched them yet, but PRI makes some too.

I made the same realization as you did this very morning *bangs head on wall*, and went down the road to a nearby gun shop.  Turned out, they had a dpms ff tube without any rails for $10 that I'm going to use until i pick the one i want.  Let me know what you end up going with, and how you like it.

Good Luck

Dan

I like the JP's as well. You can put rails where you want them and they come in various lengths. Then there is also this new model PRI. On paper I like this DD A LOT, want one.  I have wanted an SWS but never had them available when I had the funds.

BTW Armalite and DPMS threads are different as well so watch out for that too

You could make a quad rail free float for under $100.00 easy.

1. Stock DPMS free float hand guard / barrel nut  (come as a package)

2. Magpul Picatinny Sections

3. Cordless Drill & Patience

4.  ???

5. Profit

I will have a rifle length take-off soon, that I would give away complete with barrel nut.

Let me be one of the first then! Troy Industries makes a phenomenal lightweight free float tube. The Troy MRF (13.8") is a good quad rail system. If you want something more modular the TRX (13.8") is an awesome choice! I'll be dimes to dollars that the "Alpha" mounting system (since it is so much better than the original) will eventually be available for the .308 as well.

Apex CNC Machine makes a very customizable free float tube (12.5" and 15"). Just be cautious that the price climbs very quickly as you add more rails to the tube.

SWS makes one of the finest (12.89" and 15") quad rail systems available. Unfortunately, they are priced appropriately for their exceptional quality.

I did notice that Troy sells a DPMS barrel nut, I believe for their TRX rail systems...

Perhaps I can make it work with a Midwest Industries Gen 2 SS tube????

Hmmmmmm.... Looks like I'd have to either sand down, or turn down the grooves... But it just might work...

The main question is whether or not the MI tube is the correct height...

Thanks for the links, guys!
