KS Shooter
Guys, just wanting to know what you are putting on the ap4 for rings. I have a new set of burris xtreme medium rings (1 inch). will these work or do I need a set that gets up higher than the front sight?thanksKS Shooter
98Z5V
Depends on your optic, but even if you're running something that's 1-4x, unless it's on 1, it'll blow right past that front sight. You should be good with 1" rings, almost no matter what you'll have on there for an optic (unless you're running a red dot).
KS Shooter
98Z5V,thanks for the info. I have a scope to mount on the rifle - it is a new redfield 3-9x40 revolution that I received as part of the trade on the rifle. but, I would prefer something illuminated (preferred), however, I have considered either a wotac or falcon menace. What I would like would be something that gets me out to 800 meters in either mildot or mrad. thanksKS Shooter
98Z5V
Ah, you're good, man - set to 3 on the lowest setting with that scope, you won't even see that front sight post through the scope. Hard to explain, but the magnification is already seeing beyond that distance, and it won't even pick it up. <thumbsup>
Dusty44
If you have read my posts you have an in-depth look at my experience with my own scopes. All my scopes were purchased from MidwayUSA on sale. My gunsmith has stopped asking the rhetorical "When have you ever heard of anyone having trouble with a scope?" I am apparently the "one." One documented case where the manufacturer sent a new scope and another scope (different manufacturer) that seems to have crossed the line. The Nikon scope on my LR-308 is a 6-18x40, $300. The rings are Chinese tip-off intended for use with the Picatinney Rail. Tip-off rings allow putting the rifle back into the factory carry case. Clearance of the bell above the handguard tube is 3/8" to 1/2." For me, height of the eye piece is 'just right' above the stock. I have a Chinese flip-up front iron sight. The sight is invisible in the scope when down; when it is up there is a ghost image of it in the sight picture of the scope that I find disconcerting. There is not room under the scope with the existing mounts for the (Chinese) flip-up rear iron sight. I have not yet tried to shoot with the iron sights. That is on my agenda for whenever I am comfortable with the scope. The front flip-up sight is torqued in place. The rear iron sight looks like it should work almost as well for quick removal & re-installation on the rail as the tip-off scope rings. My eyes think that with a scope there should be one clean hole in the exact center of the target without regard for the distance to the target or number of shots fired. With Iron Sights they are ecstatic if there are the same number of holes anywhere on the paper as shots fired.
imschur
Dusty44 each of your posts today have brought humor to what was a miserable day for me. Whether meant in humor or not your last sentence takes the cake.My eyes think that with a scope there should be one clean hole in the exact center of the target without regard for the distance to the target or number of shots fired. With Iron Sights they are ecstatic if there are the same number of holes anywhere on the paper as shots fired.Glad to have you here. <thumbsup>

You'd be amazed at my ability to shoot under hurricane wind conditions during an earthquake in the middle of a wildfire and still blame my point of impact on my scope. SWshooter
I guess I've been using a lot of scopes for too many years. I send scopes back fairly often. I sent a Leupold back today, it won't hold zero and I'm having a custom reticle installed. I have to say I bought it used and its an older Vari-X III, definitely been around awhile and very well used. The last two I sent back were Bushnell's, they were the Banner line and wouldn't handle the recoil of a 350 Rem Mag. I am using both of them on other rifles and they are working fine. Use 'em long enough and eventually they will fail, especially if you like shooting the hard kickers.
hobbesgunner
Have you looked at the one piece Burris for ARs? I have couple of them. Look good. Nice and sturdy. Would they be too high on the bigger gun platform?? Sometimes you get a bad scope, sometimes you get a jewel..got a Tasco 2X on a 45-70 TC Contender that has refused to give up it's guts for the last 15 yrs...
