Spike's ST15 Build?

Jonas

Recommended Posts

Was gonna take this to the M4Carbine forum, but for whatever reason I can't post there, something screwy with registration, or something.

Anyway, I'd imagine here is just as good!!

So, looking to put together an AR for my wife (fairly small), starting with a Spike' ST15 lower - thinking about getting a Spike's matching upper (Slickside).

But how are the Spike's barrels? Doesn't necessarily need to be a competition gun, and it probably won't have the beegeezus shot out of it, but something fairly accurate - are the Spike's barrels pretty good? They seem to get favorable reviews.

She's pretty small, so wondering what would be best for her, probably a shorter, light-weight barrel - carbine or mid-length.

-OR- are there better options out there without spending too much more?

Thank guys.

There are decent barrels to be had for under $150. Check out CMMG and other smaller manufacturers too.

I just picked up a nice 300BLK barrel for under $200 myself from MAS Defense. The barrel I received was well made and headspaced right on the dot. Bolt fitment was excellent.

When I bought my Spikes a few years ago I was able to choose the barrel that went with the upper and I picked out a Daniel Defense 16" Cold Hammer Forged Barrel 1:7 twist and it shoots bugholes. I was talking to a rep from Spikes last week and they are about to produce thier own CHF barrels. I love my Spikes I've had it for about 6 years and have about 2000 or so rounds through it. I just recently gave it a face lift and did some work to it. As much as I like my Armalite AR-10 Spikes is my go to for the smaller stuff. The funny thing is I HATE spiders which is thier logo lol.

Thanks for the replies and advice and link gents! I'll start doing some more research.

I've got a couple Spike's forged lowers, a couple of their BCGs, then their billet upper/lower set and a Big A$$ Rail.  They do put out quality stuff.  <thumbsup>

How do you compare the forged vs. the billet? I've always thought billets were just awesome, but I've not seen a Spike's in person. The machining always seems, well, I dunno - there's just something about billet I really like in the machining.

For function, the billet set has an additional feature - bolt release on the right side.  Billet is about asthetics - it looks damn nice.  Other than the integrated ambi bolt release, it's the same as running a regular forged set.

I got the 31st set made, so that's pretty cool.  It turned into a damn nice rifle.

Here you go this is what I call my black widow, well now that the barrel nut is at proper torque specs lol.  Spikes Gen 2 Billet Upper. In the next few months they will be releasing a sweet ass new billet lower and it to be as strong but lighter than forged. I prefer billet because its a block of aluminum put into a cnc machine and cut / manufactured. Nothing wrong with forged what so ever.

That's a sweet looking' lower! I love the sharp angles!

Just got a reply from Spike's, a bit disappointed - I had asked if they build a complete upper like what they already have on their website, but with the "Slick Side" receiver. They don't do build with that upper. (Seriously? Not to order? How hard could it be?) - I guess they have their reasons. Hmmmm.....
