survivalshop
Anyone loading for the 45-70 Gov. for Hunting & what Bullets are working best for you ?
Tripledeuce
I'v shot the 45-70 for over 50 years. everythig from black powder, to duplex blackpowder, lead cast bullets to jacketed. Rght now I'm, trying two different loads. A 550gr cast bullet with 5744, and Hornadys new 325 gr flex tip with IMR 4198. The jacketed bullet has quite a bit of recoil!!!!!! planeflyer21
Marlin Owners forum is the place for .45-70 loads...everything from black powder cast and paper patched to the Flex Tips. Pages and pages of information!
survivalshop
The 325 FTX is one of the ones I want to try , the other is a Barne's Original Spitzer type , might even go to 400gr. , but the 325 gr. FTX is quite appealing , if its anything like their XTP Bullet , they work real well . I will be using a scoped ,NEF 45-70 for Hunting in Gun season , in Ohio next year , if they keep them as an option next year .
Roy
I like 405 grain lead bullets with a max load of Trail Boss or jacketed bullets with 4198.

Robocop1051
When I scored that stainless Marlin model 95 last year, it came with a few boxes of 405gr semi jacketed rounds... I beat the shiit outta myself on the first range trip. I'm going back to 325gr when this shiit is depleated.

planeflyer21
One dude over on Marlin Owners took his guide gun over to Russia, to hunt brown bear on the Kamchatka Penninsula. To a person, he said the guide and other hunters were mocking his "little gun" and "obsolete cartridge". After he was the only person to drop a HUGE bear with one shot DRT (Dead Right There)...the others took multiple shots and a fair deal of tracking...did the others in his party take an interest in his "little gun". Robocop1051
The only gun I'd replace my Marlin 45-70 with, is the same rifle in .500 S&W.
survivalshop
I will wait till after the Holidays to order a die set & bullets . They are over 15 years old , box price on them is $ 17.99 .
98Z5V
I picked up a box of Rem Core-Lokt 405gr - $42.99/box!!! Picked up the Hodgdon 2015 Reloading Manual update last night at the store (the magazine-version). I'll see what's in there for 45-70. Edited December 16, 2014 by 98Z5V
survivalshop
Ya , if you can find it , I got sticker shock looking them up lately. I need another box for the brass , damn !
98Z5V
I priced new Hornady brass, unprimed, 50 pieces. 50 bucks. Need to reload for this. Buying ammo for it just isn't gonna work. Several loads in the new Hodgdon listings - need to know if you're shooting trapdoor, lever, or modern - different loads for all of them. planeflyer21
For those of you reloading .45-70 just remember that in the blackpowder/muzzle loading section of Sportsman's Warehouse, they have .40 caliber conical bullets in a .45 caliber sabot. Just saying.
survivalshop
NEF single shot with composite stocks. I know most factory loads are set up light , because of the different rifles chambered for the cartridge. Its why I need to develop my own load of hunting . I have till years gun season to develop one to use .
planeflyer21
Those NEFs are probably the single most under rated firearms available today. The local crew at Sportsman's was taking advantage of sending in their receivers and having extra barrels in different calibers fitted. Poor man's Contender/Encore. Tripledeuce
Just a reminder lead bullets, at the same velocity as jacketed, have MUCH less recoil! Its harder to push the jacketed bullet through the bbl. Respectfully Terry Edited December 17, 2014 by Tripledeuce
survivalshop
I have cast & loaded so many through out the years & still do , just too dirty for me in most firearms . I still cast for 45 acp & 45 Colt though & they work just fine . I have a few bro's that say all you need is a cast bullet for the 45-70 , well ,I like modern jacketed bullets my self . I would have to buy a new mold , handles & bullet sizer for my RCBS Lub-o-matic ( I have all the lead I will ever need & tin to harden if needed & even a Forester hollow pointer for my RCBS Trimmer ). More money just to load lead bullets for a Hunting season only rifle ( one week in Ohio ), where as if I load Jacketed , all I need is a Die set & bullets ( jacketed ) I'm cheap in my old age ! <laughs>
planeflyer21
One of you guys also need to come up with a 800gr .45-70 load, moving about 830fps from a levergun.
98Z5V
I picked up a bunch of stuff today - only thing missing right now is the right powder. Box of 250-count 405gr Laser Cast lead-alloy projos, Hornady "Custom Grade" 3-die set, more CCI 200 LRPs, RCBS #14 shell holder, and a box of 50 Hornady new unprimed cases. All I need to get my hands on is some good powder for these things.
Tripledeuce
I'v had good luck with 4198, 4895, 3031, trailboss and AA5744. Respetfully Terry
98Z5V
I'm looking all over the city for those, plus Reloader 7. Striking out everywhere today.
planeflyer21
I'v had good luck with 4198, 4895, 3031, trailboss and AA5744. Respetfully Terry Trail Boss has been a big surprise for me. Used it in .45acp (and others) and was surprised it cycled the actions on all my pistols, with very little recoil.
survivalshop
I plan on using 4198 & 3031, since I have it. Tripledeuce You using cast bullets for your loads ?
