I read somewhere that Bushnell Elite scopes are made in the same factory as Nightforce scopes, do not know if true.

From what I can find about the .308AR, the only time to have a gas tube shorter than rifle length is if it would put the gas block in front of the muzzle. The .308 has plenty of gas, over-gassing is more likely than under.

If you have an accurate barrel, send it off to be nitrided, that way it will be an accurate barrel much longer.

Melonite is not a lining, but a surface hardening treatment which makes no dimensional change to the barrel. It is best done to a barrel that you will make no further changes to, as it is harder than most tools used to cut steel.

Not in order, but: Same controls and therefore shared muscle memory with the AR-15 Longer range and better penetration. Accuracy. Ease of mounting optics. Magpul PMags. I looked at the FAL long and hard, but in the end it had too many negatives. I looked at the M1A but it is far more ammo sensitive, and harder to mount optics.

I will be following this thread too. I need to get loading equipment yet. What I develop I will share, but my 16" has a rifle length gas system so my load data may not work for you. Most likely I will try to stay around 168 gr. to 175 gr. bullet weight.

Jgun, In your case the UBR would be a better choice. At this point I do not think I will be making a 308AR carbine, maybe an SPR/recce build but I can live with a fixed stock, since I favor 16" to 18" barrels I'm not giving up too much portability.

If you have a heavy barrel it balances better with the PRS Now to decide how I want to mount a sling.

PRI makes SPR rails for both DPMS receiver heights. I think that is what my next upper will be wearing. Wait a minute did I just say next upper ? What's that noise ? Oh, it's my wallet screaming.

Put in my vote for rifle length gas system, unless it would be longer than the barrel. Lower recoil, easier on the BCG.
