    My AKM

Looks like a well thought out upgrade for the AK platform, I have the same AR stock adapter on my Saiga. Can you tell me who makes the rail, and does it include the top rail as well?
  2. Again, just brainstorming, without the actual mags in my hand to compare, but, based on individuals on this forum that have had problems with mags not feeding and functioning properly in their guns (even though they were all supposed to be DPMS compatible mags) because of differences in the actual external dimensions of the mag tubes. I remember posting measurements from a KAC mag a DPMS mag and a Pmag and there was enough difference in them that a member I think had problems with the Pmag in his JD lower. I'm not even getting into the FAL mag here because I don't have one of them. I'm thinking that if your going to try to have a lower that will accommodate all of those mags plus the Armalite besides, your going to have to make the mag well large enough to accommodate the one with the largest dimensions and then your going to have to come up with a mag catch design that will hold all of them, including the smallest, loosest fitting one, in place securely enough so that it won't move (even when full) under recoil, something the mag catch was never intended to do without the support of the mag well in the receiver. If you can design something like that , I think it would be a pretty impressive achievement. If you can design something like that and it actually works you should patent it.
  3. just thinking off the top of my head here, I'm guessing that you'd have to have a receiver with an oversize magwell opening that could accept different "inserts", each of which would be specific to a particular magazine configuration. without even taking into acount variations of mag release mechanisim, it sounds as though it would be very expensive to manufacture, as well as being of questionable durability. Keep in mind that you can't make one receiver that will just accept all mags because the mags are different, so your making a receiver that would require you to stop and reconfigure before switching to a different mag type. I don't think you'll ever see something like this. The closest thing is that company that has the modular receiver that can be reconfigured to take diffeent mags and change calibers.
  4. Mac83, Your statement about buying selectively from Midway may have merit. I purchased 1000rds of Lake City .223 brass from them a while ago. It was sold as first quality. I cut it down to form 300BLK cases. When I started load development, I ran into problems with the cases splitting in the neck. A member on another forum told me that they buy brass from Lake City that doesn't make mil spec. Now, I don't know this to be a true, but the fact remains that when I loaded using LC brass that I got from a different source, all of the case problems disappeared. I don't mean this to bad mouth Midway, but the likelyhood is that my problems stemmed from the brass I got from them, of course I might have had no trouble with it if I used it to load .223.
  5. Don't know what the barrel ran you, but, doesn't sound like a match barrel. Now if the price was right, relative to a Fulton, maybe it would have been worth a little trouble. The + .001" on the GB mounting area isn't a big deal, in fact it's a much better situation than finding that your non clamp on GB is loose on the barrel (which has happened to me). The barrel thread is another story, if the muzzle device goes on snug it's one thing, but if it won't even start, that's another. Although having a gunsmith run a die over it to chase the thread is easily done. I think the idea that the company gets their barrels from many different sources is something of a red flag, and might be an indication that they're not selling the highest quality barrels.
  6. not yet, but I'd like to, along with those floor plates that make them easier to pull out of the mag pouches.
  7. I finally made it back to the range to chrono the test rds I loaded using the donated brass from friends and members, thanks guys. I also just got an order of new production 300AAC primed brass, so you will be seeing some coming your way shortly. First off, the case splitting that I was getting with my last loads has disappeared with all of the donated brass I used to make up these test loads, either used 300BLK marked or formed LC, or .223 brass. I have to assume the the brass I bought from Midway was not annealed properly, none of the new brass had any problems whatsoever. My new loads all made the major power factor that I was trying to achieve. I made major PF using, 145,155,and 175gr bullets. the 145's with 20gr of LIL GUN powder averaged 2400 fps, the 155's using 18grs LG powder averaged 2232 fps, and the 175 SMK's using 16grs LG powder averaged 2015fps. I saw indications that the 175's were pushing the pressure a little, the extractor marks seemed to be more pronounced. I also found that the 175's didn't cycle 100%. Not sure why,but I'll reduce that load a little and try them again before making any gas adjustments, since the 145's and 155's all cycled 100% with the present gas block setting,

I'd also like to have one of those scout length M1A's, probably in the sage stock, but that won't be until after the bench M1A is built.

Are you referring to the Kriss super V? Have you had a chance to fire one? I own one and have found it to be somewhat ammo sensitive and I've also had some reliability issues with those stupid Magpul extensions for the Glock Mags. I finally ended up with the extended Glock mags, which so far seem to be OK. If I were to do it again, I'd opt for a .45ACP AR based on one of Justins CNC Gunsmithing receivers. I think that the grease gun mags are superior to the Glock mags, besides having greater capacity, besides that, all of the AR accessories will fit, and I think you can put one together for less than the price of the super V. If you check out the pictures you can see the carbon fiber handguard and mag well I made for it. I think that both of them improve the ergonomics, but the AR's ergonomics are better, besides which, if you train with an AR all the controls on the Kriss are different.

I placed my order in April, before the Gen3 stocks had started shipping. I was told then to expect 10 months. I, too, see that people who had placed their orders before me, and who have already taken delivery, are selling them now on GB and other places, but that was not the case when I placed my order, besides which,I will be able to get mine with exactly the options I want, in the color I want, at a price that's a little lower than I'm seeing the new ones going for online. The receiver is now the thing that is controlling when I start and how long it will take for my build, not the stock, that will just be an upgrade when it comes in. The Fulton M25 looks like a top of the line setup, and a perfect match for a JAE stock, just keep in mind, if you get one and decide to send it back to JAE for upgrades, the options cost substantially more than they do if ordered when buying a new stock from them, so you'd have to add that into the total cost if comparing that to ordering one direct from JAE. Although you may end up with your finished gun sooner, if you go that route along with the Fulton barreled action. Good luck, we'll have to compare our experiences once we both have our projects completed. One other thing that may or may not matter to you, is that if you think you might ever want to shoot high power service rifle class with this gun, it has to be externally stock, which means that you'd have to switch from the JAE stock (not hard to do) and use a GI type flashhider (also not hard to bolt on) but the built in rail of the M25 receiver, although superior to the M21, is not legal, so if you think you might ever want to shoot your gun in competition down the road you might want to reconsider the M25 setup. Personally, I'd prefer to build an M25 type gun, but want to leave myself the option to shoot service rifle down the road, so am going with the rear lugged M21 receiver.

I've ordered my stock (April) and put my name on the list for the rear lugged receiver I want. As soon as I get my receiver, I'll get started. If I don't see the receiver in the next month, I may order my barrel anyway. Since I won't see my stock before the beginning of the year, I picked up a USGI wood stock that I can put it in temporarily until the JAE arrives. What are your thoughts on components? If your going for max accuracy, I'm guessing your planning on long barrel, not scout or SOCOM, do you have a barrel picked out?
  12. Same here, if it were anything between the 145 and 180gr I'd go for 500rds myself.
  13. The 220gr ammo isn't suited to my barrel twist, but i thought I'd post this for those that have a use for it, and might be interested. Click here
  14. I didn't realize that at the time when I made the original post. Since I don't presently have any of the other components for the Dillon case trimmer, I guess I'm going to continue to cut my brass down on the lathe for the time being. I have 2000 factory 300BLK cases on order and I still have a decent amount of cut down 5.56 brass (as long as I don't have any further case splitting problems with that), so I guess it's not an emergency. I may try some of the brass from Brads warehouse.
  15. Although I haven't gotten to the point of loading 300 in large amounts yet. I have found that the only additional operation that is required is the cutting down of the .223/5.56 brass. The forming is done at the same time as the resizing so that part is no different than reloading any other cal. That's why I'm trying to figure out the fastest/easiest method to do it. I agree that the extra step is a PITA. Eventually, I will have the cost/time trade off calculated and will decide which is the best option for me. The one thing that makes forming my own attractive to me, is that I have access to a LOT of free .223 brass.
  16. I have never tried this, but I don't see any vertically oriented ports, so I'm guessing that this is only intended to counteract recoil, and not have any component in reducing muzzle rise. I'm not in the habit of using the barrel of my gun for pain compliance against other shooters so the "teeth" serve no practical purpose for me. The price certainly is reasonable.
  17. Beautiful rifle Matt, good luck with it. You got a weight on that, as pictured?
  18. I was thinking about trying this out. I know that Whidden makes good stuff. Maybe I'll give him a call and ask about it. Any members try this yet? www.bradswarehouse.com/index.php?p=1_11_Trim-dies
  19. I heard about that, looks just like the Surefire, but I'm guessing they'd have done it in plastic. I guess we'll just have to wait and see about the 40 rounder. of course Nordic and lancer already have the 48 rd Pmag extension, or the full 48 rd mag, and those seem to work without problems, although a one piece 40 rd pmag would definitely be more durable.
  20. Have you actually fired one of those stocks? You have to keep continual forward pressure on the gun in order for it to bump fire. Besides which, it doesn't exactly look to be of high quality construction, considering what they cost.
  21. True, Maybe the Massoud will actually become a reality. The guys at Magpul must be seeing the interest in the 7.62 platform being shown by military and civilian market alike.
  22. I see that it appears as though Magpul will likely be offering 40rd Pmags this year. I liked the compact dimensions of the 60 rd Surefire, but, if some of the comments here are accurate, there may be some reliability issues. Not having ever tried one myself, I can't speak from personal experience. Imschur, have you tried out your 60rounder yet? I also see that Magpul took a 15 mil loan to expand, wonder what we'll be seeing from them next? www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2011/09/25/triangle-capital-invested-14-8-million-into-magpul
  23. Looks great! I think that the DD Lite rails are among the best available. I have one on my 5.56 carbine, and would like to use one on one of my .308's but always seem to find that the available lengths aren't ideal for the barrel/gas system I've selected. Just out of curiosity, Why the RIS and not the Lite, You planning to mount a grenade launcher?
  24. Now this may not be accurate, but when I refer to firing impulse, I'm not speaking so much about recoil, but the way the gun "feels". For example, some people consider the recoil from a 12ga to be noticeable, but most agree that the impulse is softer than, say a .308. Certain guns have a very sharp kick while with others it's more of a punch. I know that this is very subjective and that gun weight and comp effectiveness all effect that, but what I was wondering was if you've noticed that the impulse of the 300 is not as sharp as that of the .223. at least that's how it feels to me.
  25. I have only put one together so far, and my configuration is different so my results are definitely different than you should expect, but the other members, survivalshop, and now 6132expert, seem to have setups similar to what your describing, so theirs advice will probably be more useful. But anyway, I have an 18" barrel, adjustable gas system, lightweight BCG, using a CTR stock. On mine I have the gas system adjusted down so that the bolt just locks back on an empty mag. I'm using a standard spring and 3oz buffer. I find that this gun shoots softer than my .223 carbine with the mid length non adjustable gas system and H3 buffer. If you think your gun is recoiling too hard, you can either add the heavier buffer, or you could try lightening your powder charge a little. obviously, the adjustable GB allows you to tune your gas impulse so that you only use enough to cycle the gun without any extra recoil more than you need to cycle the gun. Question is, how important is 100% reliability to you with this gun(is it going to be for home/self defense)? if so maybe the adjustable GB is not the best way to go.
