  1. Yeah, I do only want to buy once, and cry once :) I definitely don't intend to be in a hail of fire, but then with the ceramic just dropping it can break it. sigh, not an easy choice.
  2. The thing is, thinking about the SHTF scenario, do I want ceramic plates that may withstand a couple hits but at that point are so cracked up (and not replaceable) that they aren't usable or wouldn't stop future hits? I'm not planning on taking a lot of bullets :D but still part of the thought process
  3. yeah, but more in my price range than new ceramic, its at least double that for new
  4. I found a place selling used (not hit with fire) class 3 ceramic plates for $200 a set of front/back. Seem like a good deal? these are from the late 90s, look like police issue probably

  9. related, I see a few companies make soft antispall/frag slip in pieces to go in front of plates. uses Kevlar and whatever in it. Sort of similar to the soft armor in front of the hard plate. But these slip ins aren't ballistically rated, just meant to capture the spray
  10. oh man, I skimmed and looked, and thought the trigger guard was sweet earlier today. But I didn't actually read the engraving on the receiver, that cracked me up!

  18. I guess part of my idea was to do a home done anti spall/fragmentation coating. seems like there are a number of ways to approach a DIY coating. Still working out the details, not like I have the $160 right now even. At least with the back plate likely going into the backpack in a SHTF situation, I don't have to worry about it as much there. Maybe I buy that set for the sides + back, sell the front and buy another front that is predone? life was simpler before I won a free carrier :D
  19. So I won a set of these for free, an eagle Rhodesian recon vest So i'm looking at plates. It doesn't come with the rear or side carriers. Problem is i'm broke as heck. What I found that i'm seriously considering is getting this or the 8x10 version http://www.ebay.com/itm/221416644776?_trksid=p2060778.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT uncoated, raw steel level III certified plates. I can do a base/prime coat on them myself cheap enough and just use it with the front plate only till I get the additional carriers. Also, since one plate is flat, I can use it in the backpack without needing the addon rear plate carrier for the vest. What do you think? Its $105 to get a single front plate coated with the anti-spall/anti-frag anywhere I can find it in steel and up from there for any other materials.
