HK gets Army's compact Sniper Rifle contract
D.R.D. replied to survivalshop's topic in Firearm Industry News and Gossip
That is the best explanation I have heard. ^^ Yup!! Here's what I would have put together based on the Army's requirements (were I a wealthy firearms corporation): CSASS .308 AR · Falkor Ambi Billet Receiver Set · Falkor Defense QPQ BCG · Bartlein 4150 CMV 5R 16” Rifle-length, Melonited, 1:10 LH twist, .936 Barrel · Handguard: Flakor 15" · Brake: SilencerCo Specwar QD mount & Omega Suppressor · Trigger: Geissele SSA-E · Grip –Ergo · Charging Handle: GMS-10 · SLR 9 Low Profile Adjustable Gas block .936 & tube (nitride) · Lower parts kit w/o grip or tcg Fulton · Falkor upper parts (port cover, spring, forward assist) · Vltor Receiver Extension tube · Slash’s XH Heavy Carbine Buffer & Spring · Stock: Magpul MOE w/LaRue RISR · Crusader Weaponry Advanced Rifle slipstream treatment · Cerakote FDE finish · Harris HBRMS Bipod 6-9” notch / swivel · Harris QD Rotapod RBA-1 · Harris S-Lock · JPEG JEC Harris Spikes · GDI 20 MOA QD Scope mount · Nightforce ATACR 4-16x42 F1 H59 Reticle · Troy Industries BUIS Folding Battle sights (HK front, Adj rear) FDE · 45 degree offset iron Dual Illuminated RMR · Accuracy First Bubble Level Just sayin' -
I chose to go with the Mega Slide Lock. It was on sale $64 shipped at Rainier. I'll let you know how it runs.
-
Agreed. Otherwise, it's likely to just be a nightmare for cops trying to do their job.
-
Yeah, he's pretty good from what I can see. Very good with communication and explanation. Plus, you can't beat his prices. His Beast brake is currently being designed to compete with the APA Bastard brakes, I believe. Plus, I think they are lighter. He does the tapering, cerakoting and installation as well too. I think the PRS brake maker Ross Schuler worked with him or out of his shop or something like that. I'll likely be ordering from his shortly. I'm waiting to hear about the results of his upcoming recoil sled comparison tests.
-
Blue, PA isn't necessarily the best recoil reducer. While not tested here, it seems to be more a factor of the design, surface area, angle and number or ports: http://precisionrifleblog.com/2015/08/21/muzzle-brake-summary-of-field-test-results/ The guy that tested the PA seems to want to run more testing with the top players here, like APA & JEC. I'd seriously take a look at this guy's work. He really seems to understand all of this, and has been testing his brakes alongside the best ones mentioned above. Plus, his are half the price: http://www.muzzlebrakesandmore.com/

I appreciate your enthusiasm for it, I simply just don't like the design. I'm sure it's a great product. Thanks, though.
-
Thanks guys!
-
Thanks, but I need a hard case for my specific situation.
-
I'm looking for a mid-range hard case that can accommodate a 308AR (~38" long) as well as a second complete upper that's about the same length. I've got shorter Plano cases for my AR15, and they work great. I was looking at this one, but not sure both the full scoped-rifle plus the second upper will fit. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0029KDHQI/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pd_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=1F8EFV7SLH2Y8&coliid=I2L6WZ9ECXOX5M http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000P583SQ/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=1F8EFV7SLH2Y8&coliid=I7F32QJOMQ3FP

Blue, If you wind up selling the Raptor, please let me know! Thanks, DRD
-
Yeah, the Raptor seems to be the running gold standard. The GMS-10 redirects the gas, but not that much better than the raptor from what I've seen. What's most interesting is that the GMS-10 and the Mega Slide Lock seem to have no moving handle parts. Is there any concern there for the handle to ever be blown back in one's face if the lock is not secure?
-
For my current build, I've trying to decide between these three charging handles. This build will be an 18" .308 for paper-punching/precision. Mostly from bench/prone. I've narrowed it down to these three, and am only interested in these three (Please don't say "Tacops", or others). I'm not interested in other designs. If you've got experience that leads you to believe that one is better than the other two, or have heard about problems or malfunctions with one or more of them, that would be very helpful. Also, I will not be running this suppressed. Mega Slide lock $65 http://www.primaryarms.com/sl-4000/p/sl-4000/ GMS-10 $85 http://armageddontactical.com/products/gms-10-gen-ii-charging-handle Raptor $95 (Seen this one on sale for $85 during the holidays) http://www.primaryarms.com/axts-weapon-system-raptor-ambidextrous-charging-handle-for-ar-308/p/axts-raptor-762/ Thanks! Wow. Those look sweet. I look forward to hearing more. You might also check these out as well. I've got first hand experience with both, and they are amazing, semi custom and great customer service to boot: http://c3tacticalsolutions.com/ http://lasconcealment.com/

Yup. There are a few that precision rifle blog tested that may compete with it like American Precision Arms Bastard brakes, Alamo 4 Star and JEC. I think he may be adding those to the next test. There is also the Muzzle Brakes and More "Beast" that's got 35 degree baffles and seems promising. One thing precision rifle blog added to recoil testing that is significant though, was the Muzzle flip/dip movement, ability to stay on target, follow a bullets path and return to target for follow up shots. The JEC style brake with top porting did well here, the Little Bastard ok, but not so much with the others despite the great recoil reduction. The tank brake stayed on target, but didn't reduce as much recoil. We have no idea how the M4-72 performed on this issue.

Don't know how I missed this: http://www.thetruthaboutguns.com/2016/02/jeremy-s/308-muzzle-brake-test/

Anyone shooting a Criterion Barrel in 6.5 Creedmoor? If so, have you found any factor ammo that seems to work better than others in this barrel? Thanks
-
Does the QPQ wipe clean as easily as the NiB?
-
I was actually asking to see if the "carrier only" without the bolt is available.
-
Any idea when you might have just the 308 NiB Carriers available?
-
I wound up getting a SD-E on sale for $177 shipped. Score! Love the holiday overstock!
-
While there may be differences in machining and some options, I'd think that if the receivers fit tightly together it really wouldn't matter. Your barrel, ammo, optic, and trigger selection will make a bigger difference in terms of performance.

"There’s a 5.56 test #3 coming up soon and a .308 test coming up very shortly thereafter (both will be published this December). Since many of the muzzle devices that are available for 5.56 and .308 (or .30 cal in general) are also available with AK-pattern threads (e.g. PA’s M4-72), I’m thinking there’s probably so much cross-over that it may not really be worth doing a separate AK-47 test. Seems like most of the muzzle devices that are AK-platform-specific aren’t really concentrating on recoil reduction anyway, or at least I don’t see any of the traditional-style AK things being real recoil reduction competition for what’s been developed for the AR platform for competition and tacticool use. I’ll try to get in touch with Spike’s. I haven’t been successful in the past. The budget for buying brakes isn’t that big, and there are quite a few with higher “priority” (based mostly on requests) to buy before the $110+ Dynacomp 2… Ideally a 2nd flash hiding test will be published before year end as well… Jeremy" Flash hider test was already published. Still waiting on the muzzle brake results
-
Supposedly, the next round (Part III) of the testing should be out any day. He also mentioned doing a .308 specific muzzle brake test as well.

Save money and potentially increase quality on BCG with D.Wilson Mfg Save money on the handguard with MIdwest Industries, Matrix Aerospace or the new UTG Pro series (not that the Fortis isn't really good) Put that money towards a different barrel (Criterion, Lothar Walther, Rainier Match, JP, etc)
