1:10 twist 24" barrel

I only have a 24" :'( do you think I could go with a lighter bullet for shorter ranges or the 168's for all? ( I plan on targets 1-500 yds and work out to 1000 yds). Off topic but: I have another 308 lower(home build), is their another caliber I could go with? Also I have several lowers (ar-15's) I am in the process of putting together 2- ar-15's and the 308. I bought the uppers complete but did the lowers myself. I am planning on building the new uppers my self and was thinking about different options. :sniper: Thanks again for your information

Wow, I need to weight my ar-15, I think it is in the same ballpark. How is your recoil? do you have an adjustable gas block? Amazing. I think in all fairness especially in these political correctness times, there should be an opposite topic started, ( the heaviest) then perhaps I could contribute. :'(

I have not seen many speak of OAL with thier load data. good info.what are your barrel specs with the load data you have provided?

I copied recipe post 27. i have a sufficient supply of 4064 and 168 hornaday 168gr hpbt. I have been stock piling since last summer (lucky me) They do say a broken clock is right twice a day. I just need to get off my but and finish the builds and start reloading. Thanks for the input

when I start reloading it will be with 150,168,175 and 180 grs. I think i'll be starting on the ladder from the bottom and taking one step at a time. It is interesting to reading about the different loads and the results. thanks for the reply <thumbsup>

Do you think with the 4064 and a 24" barrel the velocity would bump up 300 fps?

new to reloading. with the tar seal issue, would it be worth the effort to de-prime the cartridge in order to rework the brass if needed? Seems like a good price for LC brass.

What were your thoughts regarding the 4064?

I wish to thank everyone for their input. I ordered the GG&G XDS bi-pod with the yhm adapter. to go on my .308. If it is not to my liking I will put it on one of my ar-15 builds, but Ithink it will be fine. Interesting. everything I have read states the military brass holds has less volume, but I have not found any exactly measurements or weights with descriptions of the variances of different brass. I know everybody that loads and shoots and seems to be fine. I am at this point confident when I start reloading i'll find the right recipe. I am just curious about the different brasses. Thanks for your input re: the capacities.

Did you you by chance check the % difference in capacity between the two casings?

Those were 15 different powders out of the lyman 49th edition with a 12,400C spread in pressure

ok I have four references. I went with IMR 4064 powder and 168 gr. hpbt. 1st lyman 49th edition 40-45gr. 2nd hogdon.com 41.5-45.9gr 3rd Speer manual #14 42-46gr #4 load map sierra 37.8-43.4. I guess it just boils down to trial and error, start low and work up but I still would like a bit more input regarding the 7.62 L.C. brass with the .308 load ^-^

thanks. looking in the lyman book it show max pressures of 48,800C to 61200C depending on the powder. to me that's a lot of pressure difference but what do I know and that is with Remington brass

Speer reloading manual # 14 308 Winchester "Reduce charges developed in commercial cases at least three percent when loading military brass". Lyman 49th edition: " Shooters should also stay one to two grains below the listed maximum charges due to the smaller volume of GI brass". I am 60 years old and know books are books. I figured it would be a good starting point, but experience is experience. I am trying to get clarification and understanding. Thanks

I am new to reloading. Since the case of the L.C. is thicker I have read to reduce powder by 2 grs. in the Speer manual it says 3%. In the hornady manual it does not say, but there are not as many choices with the 308 Winchester service rifle data v.s. the .308 Winchester data. Lyman states 1-2 grains below max. listed charges. I know when starting out to start at the lower velocities, but what would that be? What are some recommendations? I also will be using the .223 Remington data with L.C. brass. Just for your information 1 Ar-15 has a 20" barrel with 1/7 twist, 2nd Ar-15 has 16" barrel with 1/7 twist and the .308/7.62 has a 24" barrel with 1/10 twist. Thanks ???

I hope everyone is happy. I am still gathering equipment and fixing a room to reload. about 4 months ago I bought a sonic cleaner, then an elderly fellow I met at the gun show said I need a vibratory tumbler with corn cob and then use walnut if you want shiny. Then another friend gave me a thumbler tumbler and I bought S/S pins. So I should have it covered every which way as they say from Sunday. :banana: thanks all for your input.
